On December 7th 1941 was the Japanese attacked a US naval base in Hawaii. Them attacking was the base of the start of World War II. “Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is located near the center of the Pacific Ocean, roughly 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland and about 4,000 miles from Japan.” (PEARL HARBOR n/d). Pearl Harbor was an easy target for Japan, knowing that they could destroy Pacific Fleet so, America wouldn’t be able to fight back. Around 8am Japan had their airplanes above Pearl Harbor, ten minutes later they had dropped a bomb and shot bullets towards the USS Arizona battleship. It took the USS Arizona Ship fourteen minutes to sink along, with at-least 1,177 men. Only 229 bodies were recovered from the 1,177 men that died on board. It wasn’t

December 7, 1941 is considered one of the most impactful days in United States’ history: the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Despite their size, Japan left an incredible amount of damage with their 5 submarines and 408 planes. President Roosevelt had been avoiding scuffling with Japan since their pact with Germany and Italy; war with Germany was sure to erupt soon enough. However, soon after the ambuscade, the United States’ declared war on Japan and launched their involvement in World War II. Japan’s leaders recognized the risks of invading one of America’s naval bases; yet they persisted.
Japan attacked the US at 8:00 a.m. on December 7, 1941 because of the embargo, fear of the US Navy expansion, and Japan wanting expansion made the Japanese people afraid of the US and caused them to react. Documents today state facts of why these are the reasons that mainly caused Japan to attack Hawaii. Pearl Harbor was a US Naval Base and was the closest and easiest way to get close to the the states. In the first day that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, more than 2,000 US soldiers and sailors had died and 1,000 were wounded. After the end of the first day President Franklin Roosevelt had talked to Congress and asked to declare war on Japan and 10 Naval Battleships had been sunk.
Did you know that fuel still leaks from the wreckage of one of the ships that sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor?. The Empire of Japan attacked the United States, specifically the naval base Pearl Harbor located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, on December 7th 1941. They attacked at 7:48 AM with planes damaging eight battleships and sinking four, destroying 188 U.S. airplanes, killing 2,403 Americans, and wounding 1,178. As a result of the attack public opinion of Japanese Americans living in the west coast went down drastically, leading to the Internment of Japanese Americans. The attack on Pearl Harbor changed the U.S. role from passively supporting the Allies with supplies, to becoming an active participant in the war on the side of the Allies.
There wasn’t any single definite event that caused the attack on Pearl Harbor, but rather a list of situations, events, and mentalities. In Japanese schools, students were taught that they stemmed from the Yamato race, which they deemed to be superior. They saw America and Europe as nations who’ve ruled for a long time and were falling apart, and off their pedestal:“an old order… is now crumbling. ”(Document A) This was their chance for their superiority to “...extend[ed] so as to embrace the whole world.”
It was december 7th 1941, a day that japan ensured the world would never forget. Despite high risk japan decided to take the gamble and enact their terror on an american naval base by the name of pearl harbor. Hundred of japanese fighter planes descended onto the naval base taking a total of 2400 lives and wounding over 1000 people. There are three main that I believe lead japan to their decision those things being , oil embargo, us militarization, and the new world order and expansion. To begin with japan was upset about oil embargo.
Pearl Harbor was the beginning of this disaster.catastrophe. It was December 7th 1941 many of they battle weapons (Planes,Ships) had been taken down and this is how it started. Five midget subs had come in to scout out the area soon after the U.S. captured four of the subs and sank the fifth. Japanese planes and submarines managed a surprise attack on the U.S at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Attacked on December 7, 1941, the United States previously deciding to stay out of World War II, now declare war on Japan. Trouble started boiling between the two countries after World War I. In the aftermath of the previous war, the U.S. proposed an establishment of the League of Nations, a way for countries to work out their problems directly without declaring war. A League of Nations was created, and numerous nations joined, among those was Japan however, the United Stated did not join.
In just two hours, more than 2,400 Americans were killed and 18 ships and 188 airplanes were destroyed (Shapiro 5). But the attack was totally unexpected. As a result, American sailors and soldiers were able to shoot down only twenty-nine of the attacking planes and destroy one submarine and five midget submarines. Fewer than one hundred Japanese were killed (Shapiro 5). With that the amount of American lives nowhere compared to the amount of Japanese lives that were taken.
December 7th is a day that will live in infamy for all Americans, a day once filled with death, destruction, and desolation. On December 7th1941 a huge fleet of Japanese fighters, bombers, ships, and submarines converged and attacked the United States Navy at Pearl Harbor, resulting in the destruction or damage of 19 US Navy ships, damage or destruction of 347 planes, as well as the death of 2471 Sailors, and many more injured. At first it seemed there was no reason for Japan’s attack but after many years the United States figured out why they did what they did. There were at least three reasons why the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor; these include: the many United States embargos towards Japan, the rapidly growing U.S. fleet, and extreme Japanese
The all-important aircraft carriers and their support ships were out to sea and were not attacked. In addition, the critically important, on shore workshops, oil storage, and logistics facilities would emerge from the attack almost untouched, facilitating the repair of ships. This would later prove to be a disaster for Japan. It would take 6 months for the US Navy to recover from the losses suffered in the vicious attack on Pearl Harbor. However it would be near the end of the war before the US recovered from the attacks and surrender of the
Instead of ships using their limited storage space and adding valuable pounds carrying extra fuel, they could make a stop in Hawaii and refuel for the second part of the journey. Hawaii came with Pearl Harbor, but with the acquisition of this new military base, where the United States stationed over one hundred ships, came a new military strike. On December 7, 1941, Japanese forces targeted the Hawaiian naval base of Pearl Harbor, sinking or severely damaging five battleships, three destroyers, seven other boats, and wrecking more than 200 planes. The United States retaliated, going into World War II, which then resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of
