Was Andrew Johnson Big Government Or Little Government?

Andrew Johnson was the first president in U.S. history to be impeached. He was a disliked by many people in the north because he favored the south and because of his pro-slavery views. After the Civil War, Johnson was stubbornly against any laws that would aid the slaves in any way or any laws that would penalize men that fought for the confederacy. Johnson didn’t get along very good with the congress. He vetoed many bills that the congress tried to pass.

Andrew Jackson hated the idea of nullification. It would grant the states the ability to not follow federal laws, and when South Carolina threatened to break up the country, he sent the U.S. army to stop it happening. Likewise, he helped to delay the civil war, Jackson would identify himself with “ordinary Americans” by his actions and speeches during his presidency. He was for the common man instead of the members of the higher society. For example, he felt the Bank of the United States only favored the rich.

Andrew Jackson, also known as Old Hickory, was a bad President of the United States of America, March 4, 1829 – March 4, 1837, because he made the Native Americans move from there land through the Trail of Tears. He was also a slave owner, and he used his presidential power against people of color (non-whites). He was against women’s rights in America. The way that he controlled the appointments to office and the right to have privileges changed that way that people saw that Republic, and I wasn’t a change for the better. He was very unprofessional with the way that he chose the other governmental job positions.

He wanted quick restoration for the Union states and not so much the southern and confederate states. He was not a person who was in favor of the slaves. He didn't have any intention on giving equal rights to the slaves, like white people, and he came into conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress. Later this will lead up to his impeachment. Andrew Johnson was the first US president to ever be impeached.

He was a man whom became President in a rapidly changing time. The Jackson era stuck out like a big, red, sore thumb compared to the past of previous presidential eras. Andrew Jackson showed more respect for individual political rights than any other president before him. He had an agenda; a plan to make things better and fairer to the people called, “democracy”. President Jackson felt that true democracy, like he wanted,

The era of Andrew Jackson which was nicknames the era of the “common man” certainly lived up to its name. As the seventh President of the United States, Jackson had a major effect on the life of the common man, in such a way that the life of the common man would never be the same again. Jackson’s aim, after the manner in which he was defeated in the Presidential Election of 1824, despite receiving more popular votes than John Quincy Adams who took on the office, was to reduce the power and the authority of the elite. When he came into power after the 1828 election Jackson began to carry out his proposals. Jackson expanded the voting right to all men, in accordance with the Declaration of Independence of 1776 which declared that “all men are created equal” instead of just the elite.

Jackson supported a strong national government and used his power to get what he wanted. He vetoed twelve times within his two terms as president. He was labeled “King Andrew the First” by some and he expanded the power of the president. His presidency was one

Mr. Andrew Jackson should be condemned for his unaccountable actions he made in office. He murdered the national bank, threw away most of his cabinet and acted as a child if he did not get what he wanted Sir Andrew Jackson should be praised since he is a man just like us and he saved America twice. Not only did he help us in Florida has a war hero in the war of 1812 but he took back America from Mr. John Quincy Adams who cheated his way into office. Andrew Jackson was a very controversial president and far different than some of the past presidents. Just like many other presidents, he had his positive is his flaws.

Andrew Jackson presidency focused a lot on small government and pleasing the common man. He attempted to shut down national banks to make government smaller. Jackson also enforces things like the Indian Removal Policy, which strengthened the bond between Jackson and the common man. Jackson was the first and only president to make the country debt too. All of these impacted are government today very much as well as other governments around the world.

Andrew Jackson was one of the greatest presidents who made very difficult decisions for our country. Although his choices were not always the popular decision, he made choices that were always promoting democracy. The things that make a good democracy are: giving people a say in government, having a good leader that you can trust to make wise decisions, peace and stability between each country and other states, and having equal power in the government (checks and balances). Andrew Jackson came into office with a popular vote and great support. His supporters viewed him as a man of the people.

Andrew Jackson, being a tyrant, abused his power in his time of presidency.   He was the 7th president, but before Jackson’s presidency, he had no political experience. One of the only things that really qualified him was the hardships he went through when he was younger. His father had died while Jackson was young and Jackson received the reputation as a “self-made man”, or an independent man.

Andrew Jackson during his time was considered a very patriotic politician he hated the rich, he hated the Indian, and loved the idea of slavery. It has been said that he grew up not educated and had a bad up bring but still managed to get to a high political suture. Jackson at one point was general and had a very decorated portfolio, which made sense he would become president, Andrew was most well know for “The Battle of New Orleans” where Andrew Jackson, prevented the British Army and General Edward Pakenham, from seizing New Orleans nearing the end of that war.

Andrew Jackson has been remembered as a ground breaking president, even being put on the $20. President Jackson was a controversial figure, doing many popular and unpopular things in his time. Although he is remembered as a hero from the war of 1812, he also caused the Trail of Tears and tried to destroy the National Bank. As a result, Jackson should not be put on the $20 bill. His actions have caused many misfortune showing that villains do exist.

The time has come to make a judgement of the great Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States from 1829~1837. Although some people didn’t like Jackson very well due to very few of his decisions, he made many good decisions during his presidency. Andrew Jackson should be remembered as a hero of the common man due to his unifying leadership, generous approach of governing, and concern for economic equality. The first reason that Andrew Jackson should be remembered as a hero is because of his unifying leadership.
