Michael, I chose the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) role in the emergency department (ED) for my project as well. However, the CNL facilitating the implementation of care for the ED boarded psychiatric patient is brilliant, and not something I had considered. Likewise, our ED boards psychiatric patients, frequently for numerous days prior obtaining inpatient placement for them. COMP 1200 is a prerequisite for COMP 1360. Furthermore, I have already taken a spreadsheet and a database class at another institution, which is why professor Burns was going to make such changes.
a. This portfolio shows the educational journey through the BSN program at Western Governors University(WGU). The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. The BSN curriculum provided avenues to keep me up to date with safe practices and learn how to master therapeutic communication. WGU also helped me sharpen my critical thinking skills in order to make decisions quickly and provide safe and effective care to patients. As the result of my training, I am ready to embark in the field of nursing and do my best to make a difference in my patients lives.

With conflicts today being merely a replay from the past we assume that this man was wrongly accused. As our population begins to trust less in the government we are creating more and more people willing to fight them in court to reap the benefits. In the New York Correctional Association’s 2005 report, is was brought to attention that 6.5 full time registered nurses out of the suggested 28.5 positions were not filled. There is also 3.0 full time licensed practical nurses out of 4.0 suggested positions left unfilled. The 23% vacancy of RN’s and 75% vacancy of LPN’s is a large part of why the medical services are falling short (“Fishkill Correctional Facility”, 2005). The nurses that are available are scheduled for extensive overtime, to the point that it is interfering with their family life. This also causes certain patients needs to not be met.
Specific practice setting is an inpatient acute care Mental Health & Behavioral Science (MH/BS). As a registered nurse in this Mental Health setting Ms. Greene provides leadership skills using the problem- solving process, solution-focused and has the ability to inspire staff members. She collaborates for the improvement of veterans’ care outcomes on the mental health behavioral science unit. She serves as a preceptor, mentor, and role model to current healthcare staff members and newly hired staff involved in the care of our veterans on the ward. Ms. Greene demonstrates experience in the following areas: leadership, advocacy, delegation, problem solving, intervention, collorbaration, planning, and priortozing .
The idea of shift work is a common one, but for nurses this is not a simple changing of staff during a certain time, change of shift signifies a time of purposeful communication between nurses and patients, in order to promote patient safety and best practices (Caruso, 2007). During this time, there is the possibility for this critical opportunity to relay important information to become disorganized by extraneous information, rather than concentrating on the needs of the patient (Sullivan, 2010). Often the patient is left out of the conversation, and is not a part of the process. Patients and families can play an important role in making sure these transitions in care are safe and effective (AHRQ, 2013).

Organizational readiness for improvement or change in health care settings is vital for the successful implementation of new programs and health care practices (Hall & Roussell, 2014). After detailed conversations with the unit manager and registered nurses, it is clear there is a need for interventions targeted toward patient-to-patient assaults, as safety is a top priority for the patients in the unit. In addition, staff members state that there has been an increase in the number of patient-to-patient assaults in the inpatient psychiatric unit (2–3 incidents per month), and this poses a threat to staff and patient safety. In Hall and Roussel (2014), states that healthcare facilities must be viewed as a high-risk environment and available financial and human resources must be available to address safety issues and concerns (Wieczorek, Marent, Osrecki, Dorner, & Dür, 2015). The unit manager volunteered to provide assistance for the implementation of the program and worked with the doctoral student on scheduling a presentation of education/teaching interventions for staff members.
Nurses play an essential role in the healthcare industry. The nurse workforce is made up of licensed nurses: registered nurses (RNs), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs), along with nurse aides. Nurses have identified that, the busy nature of their work environment, the lack of time, privacy and resources prevent the development of therapeutic relationships with patients. Emergency department nurses have to continuously care for patients within four hours of admission (NHS 2013). The busy nature of this environment, understaffing and time constraints may result in nurses not identifying and addressing the reasons for patients’ self-harming behaviour. This could potentially lead to repeated admissions at a time when emergency departments are already under pressure.
