A Separate Peace, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Cool Hand Luke are all works that incorporate a Christ Figure as one of their characters. Some of the actions exhibited by these characters include the performing of miracles, a last supper, a death and resurrection, and the betterment of their fellow peers. Christ Figures in literature commonly perform a number of miracles, which their acolytes once viewed as infeasible. McMurphy, the Christ Figure in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. is placed on a hospital ward brimming with hopeless patients under the control of an authoritarian nurse.

Jesus and Cuckoo's Nest Parallels Jesus Christ led his apostles against a very oppressive government. In the movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, R.P. McMurphy leads an oppressed group of mental patients against an extremely oppressive medical staff. There are many parallels between R.P. and Jesus Christ. The main similarity is that, even in the face of adversity, both continued to fight for what was right. Additionally, both did not have a selfish personality.

There are many references that Star Wars uses from old myths and religious ideas. As an American that believes in Christianity, I see a lot of Christian references. For example, Ben Kenobi is referred to as a monk in the Original trilogy. Darth Vader is referred to as “Lord Vader” by his weaker and inferior leaders. In Episode VI : Return of the Jedi, the main characters are in danger from a tribe that is inclined to regard the droid C-3PO as some sort of god.

In the movie Star Wars Luke Skywalker meets his two sidekicks named CP3O and R2D2. CP3O and R2D2 come from a space shuttle, with the princess named Leia, who is trying to save planets from the Deathstar. The Deathstar is the evil force headed by Darth Vader. CP3PO and R2D2 escape from the Deathstar and land on the planet where Luke is and the three team up and go out and explore. Most popular events and holidays had religious influences incorporated into the celebrations. Church leaders ran the schools, preformed at weddings, recorded births, and burial services. The church also played a role in politics of the time. Church leaders were advisors to the king.

The Crusades in Medieval Europe, from approximately 1069 – 1270 had a significant impact on the teachings and influence of the Catholic Church. It was a series of military expeditions caused by religious and personal motives that caused the church to become a vital and powerful part of the European lifestyle. The Crusades were a series of Holy wars during the time of Medieval Europe against Middle Eastern Muslims. These military expeditions were undertaken by those of every class and had the ultimate goal of recapturing the Holy Land, Jerusalem. During this time the Church began to feel threatened by the growing power and land capturing of the Islamic Muslims.

During the early Pax Romana, Christianity, emerged and it spread rapidly in the Roman Empire. The founder of Christianity was Jesus who used parables with moral lessons to communicate his ideas. Jesus emphasized mercy, sympathy for the poor and helpless, morality, forgiveness, and service to others. Christianity eventually became the official religion of Rome because of its unifying force and the fact that it appealed to all classes in society. The humble, poor and oppressed found comfort in his message of love, equality, human dignity, and promise for a better life.

Christianity is arguably one of the the most influential and important aspects that originated in western civilization. The religion started out as a small sect of Judaism and a man named Jesus spreading his word with a few followers. For centuries, Christians in Rome endured persecution and secret worship. With the appeal of eternal salvation and the hierarchy of the church, Christianity gradually spread, began to rise, and eventually became the prominent religion in Rome. Today, Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in the world.

Out of this tension and search for answers in Christian thought, emerged the Just War Theory of St. Augustine of Hippo. Augustine continued in the Christian tradition of believing all war to be intrinsically evil. He unequivocally condemned those who desired, sought, or enjoyed war, and made it clear that to engage in a just war is to engage in war by force of necessity. In Book 4, chapter 14 of his magnum opus, The City of God, he says “to carry on war and extend a kingdom over wholly subdued nations seems to bad men to be felicity, to good men necessity .”

Throughout his gospel, Jesus is depicted essentially as a humanitarian and a teacher. It shows him in the light that he helped the poor, aided the sick and ill and taught in a more philosophical way. It is also important to note that Luke took a rather more mindful way to writing his gospel because he was writing to a more educated audience (particularly throughout Greece). In view of the fact that he was addressing a more knowledgeable society, there were a lot more political and cultural concerns present throughout his gospel.

It is a popular franchise and is widely known all over the world. Star Wars plays a major role in influencing the youth and sending a message to everyone, especially the fans. George Lucas said that he wanted to do more than entertain the masses; he wanted to "introduce young Americans to spiritual teachings through 'new myths' for our globalized, pluralistic millennium" (Burke). These spiritual teachings and motifs are seen throughout the Star Wars movies and they "promote values and worldviews", which are adopted from Buddhism (Feichtinger 34).
