•Parliament issued the first internal tax imposed directly on American colonists by the british government. It levied a tax on all printed paper in the colonies. Britain thought that it was a ongoing tax, that would be spread throughout the colonies. Colonist disagreed and it arose one of the most powerful demographic groups to oppose Britain. Colonists burned the Chancellor of the Exchequer and promised to hang him if he ever visited the colonies again.

Even though the Stamp Act was repealed, parliament created the declaratory act which enforced parliament’s right to make rules to bring the people together. Britain furthered their grasp on the colonies by indirectly taxing them by adding the tax to price causing a rise in prices, known as the Townshend Act. Along with the indirect tax on imported materials there was also a tax of 3 pennies on tea. The indirect taxes caused anger within the colonies and they began to protest, they protested “No taxation without representation” and boycotted british goods, such as tea and british made cloth, and began to make their own. On March 5th, 1770, a group of Boston men surrounded British soldiers and began taunting them, as the group got more and more out of hand the British began firing at them killing several and wounding many (Document 4).

In 1585, an expedition was sent by Raleigh that led to the building of a fort on Roanoke. English colonialists, amounting to almost 100 arrived at the coast of Chesapeake Bay in 1607. Jamestown was founded, which was among the first English settlements to be set in North America. These colonialists were exposed to many adversaries and dangers that included hunger, diseases, and attack from Indians.

In 1760, when George III became the King of England, his one mission was to get rid of the war debt with the help of the colonists. (137) This angered the colonists because they felt as if their rights have been taken away from them. This caused the colonial men and women to come together and fight for their rights. There were many many events that led up to the American Revolution. To conclude, Britain’s debt resulted in conflicts within the colonies. Britain tried to tax the colonies which strengthened them as a unit and produced the want for independence and ultimately caused the war. Britain felt as if the colonists needed to repay them for the protection they provided them with; thus, the many Acts forced upon the Americans by the British caused rebellion between the colonists and the British.
