“Can’t repeat the past?…Why of course you can!”(Fitzgerald). In The Great Gatsby, there are many examples of symbolism, but the most prominent one is the green light. Jay Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan who lives across the bay on East Egg. She has a green light on the end of her dock that Gatsby often stares at, and even reaches for. Gatsby and Daisy used to be together, but he went to war and she moved on. He moved close to her and would throw lavish parties, hoping she would show up for one. With Gatsby staring and reaching for the light, it represents the American dream. Even though Jay Gatsby was really rich, he did not have all that he wanted. What he really wanted was Daisy's love, which would mean that he had reached the American dream. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is always looking and reaching out for the green light on Daisy’s dock, representing his need for love, the final piece of the American Dream. …show more content…
However, he did not have the perfect family and wife that he desired. He loves Daisy, but she moved on and does not feel the same about him. Jay Gatsby feels that she is the only one for him and he has always been in love with her. "It was a strange coincidence," I said. "But it wasn't a coincidence at all." "Why not?" "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay”(Fitzgerald). Gatsby does everything for Daisy even though she doesn't realize it. The parties are thrown for her, with him hoping she would show up to one and he moves to be close to her. However, Jay got lucky after Nick Carraway moved into the cottage beside
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby tries to find Daisy Buchanan. Daisy, is a women who fell in love with jay, but ended up marrying Tom Buchanan. There are a lot of mixed feelings with who loves who, and a massive indecisiveness throughout the whole book. The way Jay pursued love, was the same was he pursued wealth. Love and wealth play big parts in The Great Gatsby.
In the Novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are numerous symbols throughout the story. The color Green is one of the most significant colors in the book and corresponds to the green light at the end of Daisy's dock which happens to be right across the water from Gatsby's mansion. Green symbolizes Gatsby's hopes and dreams for his future with Daisy and Daisy’s dream to be with Gatsby. The first time Nick Carraway has ever seen Gatsby was at the end of chapter one, coincidentally it’s when Gatsby is stretching “his arms toward the dark water” and all that was there was “a single green light” (Fitzgerald, 24). At this point, it is not clear to the reader where and why Gatsby is stretching his arms out and what's significant about the green light.

Symbolism The light symbolizes Gatsby's love for Daisy, and also money and the greed people have because of it. " Gatsby believed in the green light," Nick said (pg. 182). In chapter 5 we seen a different meaning behind the light, meaning sadness. Throughout The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism in unique varies ways. It can be difficult to spot his use of symbolism because of his incredible ability to intertwine the meanings, monumental and minor, within the text. He has a way of giving sudden intimations that could be easily skipped over. One main example of his ideas behind symbolism is the green light.
One great symbolic object is the green light at the end of Daisy’s Dock. When describing Gatsby's infatuation for Daisy, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism in a very creative way by having the green light symbolize Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. The light is very visible and seen from all parts making it noticeable to many, including Gatsby. In the text it says, “If
In “The Great Gatsby,” Fitzgerald uses a variety of literary devices to portray the American Dream. Fitzgerald uses colors to his advantage. One example is the green light that symbolizes Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for a life with Daisy. Another is the Valley of the Ashes, which represents the ugly reality of America’s obsession with wealth, and time. He uses these symbols to convey the nature of the American Dream.
True love does not come from idolizing someone in your dreams but comes from the heart and desire to have an authentic and genuine relationship with that person. Throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby, the long-lasting relationship between Daisy and Jay Gatsby is not built on the foundation of love, but on the desire for wealth, status, and fulfillment of the American dream. As shown in this novel, Gatsby chases after Daisy with the intention of obtaining her love and ruining her current relationship but does not prevail and only finds himself trying to succeed in his dream. He finds that his dream is ruined and he cannot yet love again while focused on it.
This connects to the subject of the American Dream because "Daisy" represents Gatsby’s dreams and hopes for his future. The American Dream is the notion that every U.S. citizen has an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through their hard work and determination. In “The Great Gatsby”, the green light symbolizes the American Dream. For Jay Gatsby, it represents a future of fulfillment by being with Daisy because he has wealth, but the only thing he’s missing is his love. He’s reaching for something that is in sight, yet is still out of reach.
The color green symbolizes hope and the future. This green light is seen by Gatsby as he looks across the bay at a green light at the end of a dock. Later we find out this green light is at the end of Daisy Buchanan’s dock. This green light is a symbol of hope to Gatsby that one day he can get Daisy back which is his dream.
Love, a deep affection, is only complete when felt by two unique individuals. In this story Gatsby has become blinded by his affection for Daisy he does not stop to consider anything else but being with her. He has this illusion and fantasy he has longed for since a little boy in his dream. While he has obtained everything else, the fame, glory, and wealth he lacks one thing, a lover. He has his life all crafted out and Daisy was his missing piece.
Gatsby is constantly trying to revive his past relationship with Daisy, which ends up taking him away from reality. Gatsby’s obsession with living in the past and daydreaming about Daisy shows when he is talking to Tom and mentions that, “Your wife doesn’t love you … she’s never loved you. She loves me” (Fitzgerald 130). Gatsby needs Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him so they can make up for the past time they lost together. Later, finding out the true reason “Gatsby bought that [mansion is] so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald 78).
I selected the green light as my symbol to be on the cover of The Great Gatsby. The green light is a light across the bay that Jay Gatsby likes to look at. The reason i choose this symbol is because i think the green light has a strong symbolic meaning to it. The green light is a light at the end of the dock of a women Jay Gatsby is in love with. That women name is Daisy, Daisy is on east egg Gatsby is on west egg.
In the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, took place in 1922 in the great city of New York’s East and West Egg Island. The Great Gatsby is about a very wealthy businessman named Jay Gatsby that tries to find his long lost love. The main symbol of the novel The Great Gatsby, is Gatsby’s hope for Daisy that they will be back together someday. Gatsby's hope for Daisy is represented by the green light at the end of Tom and Daisy’s dock. Another way hope is shown by Gatsby for Daisy is when Tom tries to put Gatsby down, but Gatsby gets right back up and tells Tom that the past can be repeated and they will get back together again some day.
Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald continuously references a green light that Gatsby keeps on reaching for. The green light was significant by representing the theme of greed, being a symbol of Gatsby’s desire for Daisy, and serves as a motif for the American Dream. The color green in itself already illustrates the idea of greed and money. Gatsby already has everything anyone could dream for counting a house in West Egg, fame, and fortune, but still he is chasing after this light or in other words, chasing after the love of his life, Daisy. The light is a literary metaphor for Daisy since during the novel, once Gatsby reunites with Daisy the light begins to fade and reframes from reaching out for it.
