America is a true melting pot, and the acculturation which inevitably occurs, is an important aspect of assimilation. Since communication is a key objective in the prognosis of various ailments, the healthcare experience is reliant on today's health professionals to have an adept understanding of a multicultural environment. After taking the self-assessment survey for quality and culture, I would like to improve and understand how cultural competence can have a real impact on clinical outcomes. Taking from some of the questions I answered wrong, it make me wants to be cultural competent. There are a few questions I am surprised and shocked, that I answered them incorrectly. Medical providers that have cultural competency will overall enhance the quality of care to a diverse group of patients. Having that cultural knowledge would help the medical provider make the patient feel comfortable ultimately increasing the chance for that patient to follow through or adhere to the medical provider's treatment plan. It would also allow the medical provider to help build a friendly nurturing relationship with all of his or her patients. Developing these friendly relationships with patients will help make the patient worry less about a difficult diagnosis and would give them hope that they could one day get better from it. Cultural competence is a term I understand as a person being consciously aware, tolerant, and accepting of multiple ways of thinking, being and believing. I believe one cannot grasp the concept of cultural competence without first educating themselves on multiple, different cultures and religions. Ignorance is the number one cause of cultural bias, and ridding oneself of ignorance will open up perspectives and views. Cultural competence is about developing empathy, understanding and compassion for every race, and respecting the unique differences that each individual culture abides to.

Cultural competence means working respectfully and effectively with all children, their families, team members and the community. It means being aware of your own values, beliefs, practices and prejudices and the influence this can have on your decision making. It means continual reflection on your work practices and working towards a better understanding and respect for all cultures. Effective understanding and communication is a vital key in healthcare and is very important to improve everyone’s health and wellbeing. By doing so, we then build healthier communities. These ethical and racial groups need to be recognized and addressed because of their cultures, languages and/or health literacy of these diverse patients and their communities. “The ideas people have about health, the languages they use, the health literacy skills they have, and the contexts in which they communicate about health reflect their cultures. The way a person thinks about health, “whether that is our ‘philosophy’, our ‘worldview’, our ‘framework’ influences what we do as individuals in practice,” as well as how we deliver the health service. These elements allow us to think about healthcare in our own culturally acceptable way, this isn’t always an acceptable way of delivering the service to people with views different to our own. Cultural competence is an approach that aids in influencing the service and the education of healthcare professionals. (Taylor, K., & Guerin, P., 2010). Over the past four months, this course has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had during my first year of college. Although I have always realized the importance of being culturally competent in daily life, specifically healthcare, I was unaware of the many ways that cultural competence can be obtained. This class gave me the opportunity to view situations from a different perspective, especially through the weekly discussion boards and peer responses. Learning from classmate can teach more valuable lessons than listening to boring lectures or reading hundreds of pages in a textbook because it is easier to relate to experience rather than hypothetical situations. Key components of the cultural assessment include exploring what is important to the patient along with the cultural aspects that encompasses the patient and their overall health. According to Andrews and Huber (2016), a total of twelve components can be included in the comprehensive cultural assessment. These key components include: communication; health-related beliefs and practices; kinship and social networks; and religion and spirituality. Communication can vary among patients including the ability to speak the same language as the nurse, if any hearing or speech deficits exist, or if nonverbal communication is forefront. Furthermore, health-related beliefs and practice variations can be evaluated through by the way the patient and their support systems view health and illness.
Cultural competence is very important in providing patient care. Culturally competent providers should understand and respect the patient’s beliefs, values, and behaviors, and develop a treatment or care based on the patient’s specific needs. Being a healthcare professional requires you not only to assess, diagnose, and make a treatment plan, but also take into account patient’s beliefs and perception of their health-related issues. Nowadays, there is more emphasis on educating healthcare providers to not only focus on disease and diagnosis, but also incorporate assessment of patient’s experiences, feelings and perceptions of his or her disease into a patient care. I feel that most of the younger generation healthcare providers try to explain the disease and treatment to the patient and hear what is the patient’s perspective on it to ensure that a patient is part of the healthcare team.
