Cultural competence is very important in providing patient care. Culturally competent providers should understand and respect the patient’s beliefs, values, and behaviors, and develop a treatment or care based on the patient’s specific needs. Being a healthcare professional requires you not only to assess, diagnose, and make a treatment plan, but also take into account patient’s beliefs and perception of their health-related issues.
Nowadays, there is more emphasis on educating healthcare providers to not only focus on disease and diagnosis, but also incorporate assessment of patient’s experiences, feelings and perceptions of his or her disease into a patient care. I feel that most of the younger generation healthcare providers try to explain the disease and treatment to the patient and hear what is the patient’s perspective on it to ensure that a patient is part of the healthcare team. Assessing patient’s perspective on things may increase patient’s compliance and improve patient’s outcomes. However, some of the old school doctors don’t really like to explain their decision-making and assess patient’s perspective on things.

He usually would perform physical examination, order labs, and decide on the treatment, but almost never includes my grandmother in his decision making process or asks what does she think about the situation. I talked to my grandmother about this matter, but to my surprise, she is very much satisfied with her doctor and would not want to be more involved in her health care. I compared my PCP visit and realized that I would want completely opposite experience. When I go to my doctor I want to know everything about what is going on with my health and I want to be totally involved in my healthcare. I want my doctor to ask me questions about how I feel about certain things and what I believe will work for
After taking the self-assessment survey for quality and culture, I would like to improve and understand how cultural competence can have a real impact on clinical outcomes. Taking from some of the questions I answered wrong, it make me wants to be cultural competent. There are a few questions I am surprised and shocked, that I answered them incorrectly. I do understand that with training, I will start to gain cultural competence but it will take consistent individual practice on my part to develop and maintain individual cultural competence. Cultural competency can be described as the ability to interact with different cultures in a positive manner. Many cultural differences can become apparent in a number of situations. According to Fadiman, doctors have a moral duty to save lives even if they don’t agree with the values or beliefs of someone else’s culture (1997). This paper will address the topic of cultural competency, with a concentration on the importance of cultural competency in the medical field. It is hard to imagine how frustrating it may be to come across a patient that resists a professional’s opinion because they have solid beliefs or do not understand what doctors are attempting to convey.
Medical providers that have cultural competency will overall enhance the quality of care to a diverse group of patients. Having that cultural knowledge would help the medical provider make the patient feel comfortable ultimately increasing the chance for that patient to follow through or adhere to the medical provider's treatment plan. It would also allow the medical provider to help build a friendly nurturing relationship with all of his or her patients. Developing these friendly relationships with patients will help make the patient worry less about a difficult diagnosis and would give them hope that they could one day get better from it. Cultural competency is increasingly important in healthcare today. In America today, we are facing a lot of tension between cultures today. America is a very diverse country with many cultures co-existing and in order to properly care for patients professionals need to be able to understand and tend to their cultural needs. Whether it be a difference in language, understanding that someone is a veteran and how that may affect them psychologically, or any other set of circumstances that surround a specific culture. Having the knowledge and resources that cater to different cultures makes for better experiences across the board and, consequently, makes for more effective healthcare visits.

To become more culturally competent, a health service or professional or system needs to value diversity, have the capacity for cultural self-assessment, be conscious of the dynamics that ,occur when cultures interact institutionalise cultural knowledge, adapt service delivery so that it reflects an understanding of the diversity between and within Cultures. Equity of Australian healthcare access is important for all Australians and is difficult to achieve when access issues are not addressed. As well as these issues, some patients from a culturally and linguistically diverse background experience discrimination from the system of health care due to their country of origin, cultural background, and religious beliefs. Healthcare professionals need to recognise this potential and be prepared to advocate for their patients when necessary to ensure adequate care.

America is a true melting pot, and the acculturation which inevitably occurs, is an important aspect of assimilation. The lack of cultural competency by physicians in health care settings is producing many barriers to health care that is negatively affecting Hispanic families, such as miscommunications, poor adherence to medications and health promotion strategies, and misunderstandings that lead to misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment for Hispanics. The patients I have worked with have become my greatest teachers. I can’t sit down and flip to a chapter in a textbook that would teach me how to listen to a patient and let their unique history paint the picture of their present illness. A physician that I shadowed told me something that has since resonated with me. She told me how every patient has a story, and you always need to listen carefully because these stories aren’t pointless, they often can lead to your diagnosis. I personally believe the most important member of the care team is the patient; without communicating with the patient there is no chance to obtain crucial insight as to the illness that is presented to you.

Cultural competency in the health care sector is vital to giving accurate health care given the vast array of races, cultures and ethnicities we live among. If a healthcare practitioner were culturally inept, they are unable, unwilling or lack the skills to become competent in understanding and embracing cultural differences. As it pertains to healthcare, we can't apply treatment and diagnostics with a broad brush. We have to be able to take deeper look at everyone's culture, background and understand lineage and inherited characteristics.
