Combining intelligent, beautiful and ambitious women with restrictions placed on their personhood have a tendency to become a lethal combination. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Lady Macbeth emulates the classic femme fatale character; however, the ambition that resides within her often goes unnoticed because of her gender, resulting in her having to use alternative methods to achieve her goals. Lady Macbeth learns to use her femininity, something others would see as a disadvantage, to her benefit. She masters the art of seduction and uses manipulation as well as deception, and detachment to conceal her truly power hungry nature. By reducing him to nothing but his manhood, Lady Macbeth causes her husband to feel as though he must prove himself to be a man once again. Secondly, the use of her lower status as a woman is especially relevant when she is able to lead any forthcoming suspicions away from Macbeth, because no man would ever believe a woman capable of such diabolical nature. This is especially evident when Macbeth goes off on a tangent and admits to killing the guards. Sensing that her husband is acting loquaciously, as he reveals information that could potentially lead to suspicion thrown upon them Lady Macbeth professes that her delicate female sensibilities are affected. Immediately Macduff says “Look to the lady”(II.iii.115). This causes the rising tension to dispel and once again, the coast is clear. No one is even slightly skeptical about Lady Macbeth’s sudden faintness. Macbeth is also one of the most ambitious character as he does many crimes to achieve the power and become the King. Macbeth’s ambition started when the witches told him about the prophecies because of these prophecies he killed King Duncan and planned to kill Banquo. Before Macbeth killed the King, even though he was really ambitious he still thought before killing Duncan this shows ambition in a positive way. However, he still killed King Duncan this shows ambition in a negative way. The first time Macbeth met the witches one thing they said to Banquo was that his son will rule the world in the fear that someone will take his kingship he tried to kill Banquo’s son.

In the beginning Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Lady Macbeth was a ruthless and masculine woman. She showed the audience that, mentally and emotionally, she was stronger than Macbeth. Although as the story started to continue the audience began to see that she was becoming mentally insane. Lady Macbeth easily convinces Macbeth to proceed and King Duncan is killed. While waiting for Macbeth to return from the king’s chamber, Lady Macbeth shows some of her own ambition, “That which hath made them drunk hath made me bold” (2.2.1). By successfully pressing drink upon the guards, Lady Macbeth is emboldened. To compare and contrast the roles of Lady Macbeth in the play, giving close consideration to their relationship their husbands. In the play ‘Macbeth’ we notice that the roles of Lady Macbeth and Lady Macduff are very different. The contrast between these two ladies, is especially noted by each woman’s loyalties and manner of death. These two women, as similar as they were, also had dissimilarities that are far more striking. Although Lady Macduff and Lady Macbeth each had the ability to influence their family, they used this influence in entirely different ways.
