There were growing tensions in the Northwestern territory between colonists and native tribes that was caused by the results of the Treaty of Paris. The U.S. gained control over the land northwest of the Ohio River (northwestern territory). Natives that lived in northwestern territory responded in revolts against colonists and the American military. In response, George Washington called for General Anthony Wayne to lead an expedition against tribes in the Northwestern Territory (present day Ohio) led by Chief Little Turtle. On August 20, 1794, American forces defeated the Native American uprising, that occurred in present day Ohio, also known as The Battle of Fallen Timbers. The seven defeated tribes ceded large portions of Indian lands which allowed U.S. citizens to migrate westward. The domestic affair was important to Washington's legacy because his actions showed his power over Natives and exposed his determination to expand the U.S. Both problems continue to arise during Manifest Destiny and Washington's approach is used as a reference and model for future presidents. …show more content…
Enraged citizens, particularly in Pennsylvania, revolted against the increased tax by attacking tax collectors and forming resistance movements. To demonstrate the government's power, George Washington ordered militia from several other states to Pennsylvania to halt the violence. The revolts quickly died with little violence and later on, Washington showed sympathy to men convicted of treason by pardoning their charges. The domestic affair demonstrates Washington's presidential power over the people while still demonstrating kindness and fairness during the aftermath. Again, Washington's actions are used as a model on how to deal with domestic affairs of the people while still giving and receiving respect from U.S.
(Fleming, 2009) President Washington yelled these words in extreme frustration after receiving word that the Western Confederacy had decisively defeated Major General St. Claire and destroyed the Western Army in the Northwest Territory. The Western Confederacy, led by Miami chief Little Turtle, consisted of Indian warriors from the Miami, Shawnee and Potawatomi tribes. (Henretta, 2012) These tribes united to keep American “whites” from settling their lands, which they claimed north of the Ohio River. The Confederacy used raids and violence to instill fear and unrest in the Northwest Territory. For the United States to claim the Northwest Territory in reality and not just as stated in the Treaty of Paris, the Indians had to be dealt with.
For example, there was a failure of peace negotiations with the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Many Native Americans there in which Wayne opposed, feeling that war was inevitable, he decisively defeated them. He used the Treaty of Greenville(1795) with the chiefs of the defeated tribes, who ceded lands in the Northwest Territory. He was ruthless in the way he killed innocent Native americans. The fighting took place on the Maumee River, near present-day Toledo.
George Washington and Indian Policy George Washington was elected the President of the United States in 1789, and as everybody knows, was the first President in American history. For people who do not know who the first president is, he can be found on the dollar bill. After Washington was selected as the president, he chose various people to run each department in the government. He selected General Henry Knox for the Department of War, Alexander Hamilton for the Treasury, and Thomas Jefferson for the State (218). Alongside those people, Washington was President for a number of years (winning reelection in 1792) until John Adams became president in 1796.
Commonly known as the first president of the United States of America and as the father of his country, George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia(Grimm). He came from a wealthy family, his father Augustine Washington owned land and slaves and was a rich farmer (Grimm). George Washington is one of the most crucial figures in American history. Washington is known for his great humility as a man in a position of great power.
At the young age of 21, George Washington was just beginning his experience within the military. He was sent out with an Indian scout to spy on the French and gather what information could be useful to win the battle against them. Washington found the troops in a cavern drinking. He learned a very valuable lesson that night. He learned that distraction is the key to success.
George Washington’s military career started in 1752, as he was appointed by the Governor of Virginia as Major to the militia. Afterwards, he and his army struggled to conquer the upper Ohio Valley, fighting the French for it. He then led 300 men to Fort Duquesne to fight the French, and won the land. In 1758 Washington resigned his part in the militia. While he was away, he studied the tactics of the British military, so one day, if he so chose to return, that he would know a bit on how to defeat the soldiers.
From making decisions regarding an entire country, to deciding whether to pursue personal dreams, many difficult decisions have been made in the past. There are many examples in history where the results of not acting are greater and far more devastating than those of a failed chance. Although the outcome is sometimes unknown, taking a chance is essential to create many opportunities. When America was first established, president George Washington had a difficult decision to make regarding rebellious southerners-sending troops would address the issue, but there was a risk that the country would fight against the government’s power.
George Washington was America’s most essential man. He experienced the loss of his father at a young age, yet he became a successful plantation owner, a major in the Virginia militia, a politician, a general and the first president of the United States of America. Though he experienced many adversities in life he was able to take these experiences and use them to better a country. George Washington created a new government for the United Sates of America in his own image which was moral, fair and responsible because of his own life experiences as a general, politician and entrepreneur. George Washington was born on February 22nd, 1732.
Some protests even began to get violent with tarring and feathering tax collectors. George Washington was not happy with this and was not going to stand for it. Washington responded immediately with troops and continued to enforce the laws. He wanted to show that the new government was not going to be undermined and to show it’s strength. Since the country was under a lot of war debt, particularly the northern states.
George Washington’s Presidency George Washington, as every American has known since around pre-school, was our nation’s first president. But what if we didn’t have a president? Maybe a king, or even a theocracy? Originally, George Washington thought that maybe a constitution may not work, and a ruling elite may even work better (William P. Kladky). The Constitutional Convention had many long and heated debates on how to best create their government to give equal power to all branches of the government, and a board of three was one of the contenders (William P. Kladky).
George Washington was not just "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen," as he was eulogized by Henry lee, but first among america's chief executives in the minds of many presidential scholars, including Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Joseph Ellis. After leading the continental army to an improbable victory over the world's most powerful empire, Washington faced another daunting challenge to transform ink on parchment into the actually of the American presidency. The power of the modern presidency is not defined by the constitution. It's defined by the Washington presidency. If you read the constitution of the United States on the executive branch and the power of the presidency.
Throughout the many periods of history, there have been many great leaders in the United States, such as the presidents and many reformers of movements. These powerful and courageous people led to many changes within the nation that better the country. Great men exist regardless of the time period or region they live in, but history tends to only recognize them and highlight their contributions to society during a time of crisis. However, great men begin as regular men, but they must work their way through a social status rank in order to be deemed as credible. One of the most widely known leaders of the United States is the first president, George Washington who served from 1789 to 1797.
Although unrelatable and underappreciated in the eyes of modern history, George Washington shows his greatness through his character. Contemporary culture often neglects to recognise Washington’s greatness. Sadly, he has become a figure so far removed from the ideals and lives of modern Americans, that his name often provokes boredom. Nonetheless, his character proved to be perfect for what America needed during his life. His greatness was largely due to chance.
Conflict in Ohio - Fighting often broke out between native Americans and settlers - Settlers vs. NA - Little Turtle of the Miamis and Blue Jacket of the Shawnees organized a resistance movement in 1791 - They were armed with British muskets and gunpowder, and drove the white settlers out of the area - President Washington sent General Anthony Wayne into Ohio in 1794. - Many native American groups gathered at Fallen Timbers ready to battle - They thought Wayne would have trouble fighting because there were fallen trees everywhere, nevertheless, he persisted, and beat the native Americans. - In 1795, leaders of many Native Americans signed the Treaty of Greenville. They gave up land that later became a part of Ohio.
Thousands did not survive the journey westward. Then more insults came to the Native American people as the land they were moved to and promised, over time, began to be invaded once more by American settlers. Native lands just shrank and shrank and shrank over time until the government established reservations. The reservations remained and the Native lands became what we know them as today. The idea of Manifest destiny and one President who saw these peoples, who lived on this continent for thousands of
