They are responsible for maximizing value and ensuring that the corporation conducts its business in a highly ethical manner. Furthermore, the board of directors guarantee that practices are in compliance with the law. In 2012, Tim Hortons was taken to court by franchise owners, when fingers were pointed at their business practices. Franchise owners argued that Tim Hortons had stopped freshly baking their products and instead began to par bake and flash freeze their baked goods. In addition, franchise owners were upset that prices of Tim Horton’s products were increasing. For instance, in 1974, this corporation had created the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation to help those who are less fortunate and provide an enjoyable camp experience for children who are economically disadvantaged. As a part of this foundation, an environmental program is incorporated which enables children to explore natural regions and discover more about the environment. Tim Horton’s has also worked to maintain strong relations with Aboriginal communities for many years by creating aboriginal outreach programs. In addition, this fast food chain is extremely passionate about helping communities grow and helps out by financially supporting many causes. For instance, every year the corporation donates $1.25 million towards the Tim Horton Children’s foundation to aid disadvantaged children. In this paper, I am going to discuss and explain my opinions on why company Q is or is not socially responsible. Company Q recently closed a couple of stores in high crime areas. Company Q also started offering very limited health conscious and organic products. The local food bank has contacted Company Q requesting day old food for donations. Company Q has declined the donation request due to possible fraud by its employees and has started throwing the food away.
In the article “How to Make Oatmeal…Wrong,” New York Times writer, Mark Bittman contradicts McDonalds, so called, “healthy” wholesome oatmeal. Bittman claims that McDonald’s, the leading multinational fast-food giant, makes on average $16.5 billion per year. All of which is done by the deceptive and mind twisting marketing. The fast-food giant targets unsuspecting kids, teens, and average citizens that are looking for more for their buck. So, it isn’t that surprising that McDonald 's is famed and favored for having cheap food.
Canada has around 45,000 children that are Orphans. Many of the Orphanages are under funded and lack in resources to effectively care for children. However there are large corporations that are recognizing these issues and taking initiative to make a change and help these children. Sobeys should also take part in helping the children across Canada and around the world. Sobeys should create a Kids First Program where their optimal goals is raising 1000 clothing unit and for Sobeys to donate 10,000 LBS.
When I look at Alpena Michigan I already see a warm and friendly community. People are nice to each other and helpful. The stores in Alpena are always giving to our community. They also are helping the community also. They constantly give to us and help us.

Why has Loblaw’s strategy been successful? Loblaw success can be attributed to its efficient operations, its customer loyalty programs, the popularity of its private label brands, and large-scale purchasing efficiencies. Loblaw has showed a good understanding of the Canadian grocery market due to its time-tested strategy. The company has presence in virtually all Canadian provinces with a tailored value chain that helps them achieve high revenue and standards. Additionally Loblaw offers competitive wages and benefits.
However, if one compares the quality of both coffee shops for food and drinks, an average individual would think that Tim Horton’s food quality differs a lot from Starbucks. Tim Hortons offers a nice slushy lemonade drink for the hot weather for a decent and reasonable price. However, Starbucks offers a diluted drink for a terrible price. If one ever plans to drop by Starbucks to buy themselves a nice cold drink for the hot weather and one chooses Teavana, that person needs to pay attention to how the workers make their drink. As they prepare the drink, that person would notice that they would first add a coloured liquid.
Tim Horton has a comparative advantage in terms of price competitiveness. They offer various menu with reasonable price. They have had the most franchises in Canada as well. Even though the company is moving to extend their area from Canada into foreign markets, the popularity of the company is still a range of around the North America. Whereas, Starbucks has the biggest strength of its brand name value in the world coffee industry.
Environmental metrics measures the amount of impact a company has on the environment. The new Belgium brewery focuses on 3 key factors (water, waste and emission) to reduce the environmental impact. The company plans to perverse water by setting up sub-meters in their facility to monitor where water is being wasted, changing the ratio of water to beer so that less water is used per a barrel and using dry hop to reduce the usage of water. To reduce the amount of waste, the company has replaced 2 dumpsters in each of their buildings with recycling bins and implemented new materials to the recycling program. The recycling program now includes materials such as plastic bags, super sacks, compact discs and many other materials.

The company is the leader in the quick service food industry in Canada, as well as one of the most recognized brands in the nation. The company has finalized negotiations for the acquisition by G3 capital, an investment management firm. The chain restaurants operate in the quick service industry in multiple countries, with majority of the restaurant traffic occurring in North America. Tim Hortons most popular product is the premium blend coffee; additionally the store locations sell various coffee based drinks, baked goods, snacks, and sandwiches.
In the recent years more and more companies in the retail and food industry are concerned about the environmental consequences of their action and also the social ethics for the people involved in the production process. This is a shift from the philanthropic actions companies used to take in 1970’s and by following basic international standards to a ‘business case’ perspective of CSR (Customer Social Responsibility). According to the World Business Council for Sustainability Develpoment ( WBCSD) CSR is: ‘’ the commitment of business to contribute to sustainable economic development, working with employees, theirfamilies, the local community and society at large to improve their quality of life’’ (World Bank, 2002)
