In the Novel “The Outsiders” Ponyboy Curtis lives with his older brother Darry, and his younger brother Sodapop. However it is an unwise decision to leave Ponyboy with Darry as he is an abusive, irresponsible, and immature guardian. Ponyboy Curtis should be put into the system where he will be better taken care of and in a more stable environment that he would be if he stays with Darry. Firstly, Darry is irresponsible. At some points in the book it doesn’t seem like Darry cares for Ponyboy at all. “Our front door is always unlocked in case one of the boys is hacked off at his parents and needs a place to stay” Darry, knowing very well of the type of neighborhood they live in, should always lock the door. But instead of being a responsible adult, leaves the door open for their friends. Darry also allows Ponyboy to participate in dangerous activities like public fights. “Let me fight, Darry…” “Well”-Darry gave in-”I guess you can.” Even after Ponyboy almost died in a fire Darry is …show more content…
He hits Ponyboy when he tells him that he was sleeping in the lot, and when Sodapop tries to settle the conflict Darry goes over the edge.“You don’t yell at him!” Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door. Darry, the guardian, hits ponyboy for trying to stand up for his brother. This causes Ponyboy to run away further putting him in danger where he is then nearly drowned by Soc’s. Not only this but he also is in constant danger of being jumped if he’s alone. “I went on walking home, thinking about the movie, and then suddenly wishing I had some company. Greasers can’t walk alone much or they’ll get jumped.” This depicts the dangerous environment and people Ponyboy is around. Ponyboy would be much safer if he was taken in by the system. If he was put in a boy’s home he wouldn’t be threatened by his abusive guardian or the dangerous people of the
What this shows is that Darry would beat up Dally if he got found out that Dally got Ponyboy and Johnny out of town with money and a gun, which means that all he is doing is sticking up for his brothers. He doesn’t want them to get into any trouble or run away.
He didn’t realise how much he cared for them and how hard Darry worked to live together as a family because the brothers knew they would get separated into boys' homes. Ponyboy loved Sodapop, he was his favourite brother and person, to him, Sodapop was his only family left and was affectionate. It wasn’t until Ponyboy was in the hospital waiting room when he saw Darrel crying because of him. “Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me.” Even if they had argued almost everyday, Darry was only looking out for his younger brother because no matter how much they fight, they will always be family.
He will be able to live in a well, organized home. Ponyboy and his brothers live in a medium size house. Their house is very crowed with things in the middle of the floor and n top of furniture. This can make getting around the house harder than it is suppose ti be. From the way the house is described, we can concluded that the home Ponyboy is living within a messy and unsafe environment for children and teens.
Ponyboy was still not back to his normal self, but Ponyboy begs Darry to let him fight in the rumble. ““Let me fight, Darry. If it was blades or chains or something it'd be different. Nobody ever gets really hurt in a skin rumble.” “Well”--- Darry gave in--- “I guess you can.
“I went on walking home, thinking about the movie, and then suddenly wishing I had some company. Greasers can’t walk alone much or they’ll get jumped” (S.E. Hinton 2). Thus resulting that Ponyboy is left unsupervised by Darry, when Darry could have have came and picked him up. For the most part Darry knows what could happen to Ponyboy but dosen’t bother to even go out and look for him. “Our front door is unlocked incase one of the boys is hacked off at his parents and needs a place to stay” (S.E. Hinton 105).
First, he needs care for himself. In foster care he would learn to trust people. According to the book it says he trusted no one but himself. Foster care will believe in him and trust him because his bothers were never there for him. Ponyboy there will get help and support for his nessary and for himself.
Darry then decided to step up and “come of age” to try to be a father like figure for Ponyboy. Ponyboy doesn’t seem to think that Darry cares for him because of the way Darry treats Ponyboy so Ponyboy turns to Sodapop more, “Sodapop is different from anybody; he understands everything...almost. Like he 's never hollering at me all the time the way Darry is, treating me like I’m six instead of fourteen,” (#2). This shows that Ponyboy is annoyed of Darry 's strict father-like figure because Darry is always telling Ponyboy what to do instead of being their for him. But Darry’s strict Father-like figure isn 't so bad, it did do some good…..
According to Sodapop, why did Darry get upset with Pony? p. 17-18 Darry got upset with Ponyboy because he went walking home from the movies on his own and got jumped by the Socs instead of asking for a ride. How were Ponyboy and his brother different from other hoods or greasers?
Furthermore, In the book it states “Please be careful because couldn’t stand it if anything happened to you!” This shows that Darry only wants the best for Ponyboy. This also shows he do anything for him. This is just another one of the reasons that prove that Darry is a good guardian for Ponyboy. Some might say that Darry is a bad guardian.
Ponyboy should stay with his family and friends. While there are many statements supporting sending him to a foster home there is also good reasoning for keeping him here with Darry and Soda. ¨The jury has reached a decision,¨ I stated, ¨they have decided to keep Ponyboy with Darry and Soda.¨ the reasons for which he was staying were simple. His family was supporting, he could learn protection for self defense only, and because they can more than likely care for him better than a foster home
In the novel “The Outsiders” , by S.E Hinton, Darry made a choice that ultimately drove the plot. Ponyboy comes home late at night , and Darry caught and yelled furiously at him for being out late and as Soda tries to defend him he became angry and slapped Ponyboy. The moment when Ponyboy came home, Darry acts furious as the text states, “Where have you been? Do you know what time it is.’ He was madder than I’d seen him in a long time.
Ponyboy didn’t even listen to Dally (the most dangerous person in the gang) when he shouted, “Get outa there! That roof’s gonna cave in any minute. Forget those blasted kids!”

He could take anything. It was Johnny I was worried about.” He knows how frightened and anxious Johnny is after being jumped and how he is not as tough as the rest of the Greasers.
