Their goal was “to intimidate blacks so that they would fear for their lives and stop supporting the Republican Party” (222). In order to accomplish this, the Klansmen set out wearing their full white cloaks to whip, shoot, and rape the freedmen who were able to vote. They made camp at the poll stations and gave warning to the African Americans who were planning to go to them in order to vote.

Going beyond the roots of the southern states, the KKK had a huge impact on the American society in the 1920’s. To fully understand the Ku Klux Klan you have to know how the KKK originated. The Ku Klux Klan founded in 1866 in the town of Pulaski, Tennessee by former confederate army veterans; the first leader of the KKK is also known as the “Grand Wizard” was Nathan Bedford Forrest who was a former slave trader. The KKK was created in order to enforce white superiority in the south. The Klan members primarily targeted people who were not white, Anglo- Saxon, or Protestant.

There were even paramilitary organizations; Brinkley says, “the Red Shirts and White Leagues armed themselves to ‘police’ elections and worked to force all white males to join the democratic party” (368). On the other hand, these organizations worked to keep white men on their side and against the newly freed slave population. As a consequence of the aggressive actions taken, the former slaves’ rights were not properly protected during the Reconstruction

Throughout the year’s historians have studied and debated what impact the KKK had on the Civil Rights Movement, 1954-1968. With evidence, it is clear that the KKK had a negative outlook on the Movement as it allowed African-Americans to have social and political freedom and gave them equal rights. Due to the racial and white supremacy ideals of the time many opposed the movement causing the causal factors that developed the KKK. Since its birth in 1865 the Klan left forever Intergenerational trauma on many African American long after its disbandment in 1968. In response to these heinous crimes the government introduced a series of Acts and Legations with the hope that it would disempower or even end the KKK.

There were many things that added to the fire such as the newly freed slaves, the political parties, and the Ku Klucks Klan. After the war ended tons of former United States slaves were freed and it was a complex situation. The slaves were just put in a world they have not been prepared for. Their whole lives were built around dedicating their life for free labor.

Attempts to rebuild the South ceased to exist in 1877, just over ten years after the Confederacy surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox Court House, Virginia. It seemed as though everything was on the right track in 1876, the one hundred year anniversary of The United States. That was, however, until the South waged conflict against black and white citizens of The United States.

After the second generation they went against blacks, Jewish, catholic, and foreigners. The KKK functions as a group that fights against non whites who don 't respect or follow whites. The klu klux Klan is an anti black, Jewish, catholic, and foreign group. They had not only one but two generations the first generation started in 1865 on December twenty fourth.

Congress tried many attempts to stop racism as reflected by the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which gave emancipated African Americans several legal rights. They also passed the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery and the Fourteenth Amendment, which made free slaves U.S. citizens. However, many white supremacists were upset by these changes and started the “Old Time Ku Klux Clan” a group made to terrorize African Americans and scare them “back into their place”. Even white supremacist Congressmen passed black codes which limited the rights of former slaves such as testifying against whites and even loitering in public. The Ku Klux Clan ended up causing so much violence against African Americans that Congress had to pass the Ku Klux Clan Act to give African Americans military protection.

The North was sick of being told that they were not protecting blacks in the South and neglected them. The South killed Reconstruction because of their resistance over the North’s help, and their corrupt ideas for reconstructing the

White organizations terrorized black people because some white southerners felt threatened by the black race’s motivation to better themselves. Although, white supremacist successfully tormented negroes, negroes deliberately voted against political groups associated with white supremacy. The Ku Klux Klan, the most prominent group of white supremacists in the United States with over four million members, began losing a vast majority of their followers throughout the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. The Ku Klux Klan’s losses of influence contributed to the tolerance of African Americans and other minorities in U.S. society. The Ku Klux Klan, most prevalent in the south, with “Klan membership exceed[ing] 4 million people nationwide [in the 1920’s].” (Ku Klux Klan 86-87) was responsible for the lynching of at least 4,733 people according to Tuskegee University.

The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.

The individuals that chose to act against the minorities are the people who would decide to join the Ku Klux Klan. Members of the Klan tried dispose of any power and benefits the blacks and other minorities were given throughout history. They had all different methods, from burning down homes to murder, that they would use to terrorize the blacks, Jews, and others. What reasoning did the members of the Ku Klux Klan have for behaving with such violence? The Ku Klux Klan felt that they ought to have power and predominance over all other races, and that was reason enough for them.
