Segregation has made a huge impact on how human beings of different races and religions are treated. Many historical events have showed how segregation and racism is wrong and selfish.Discrimination has caused many uproars and protests all over the country to protect all races.The three main reasons why segregation is wrong is that it takes away their freedom, makes them feel unequal and treated differently, and finally it is unconstitutional.

For instance,’’When the black students, known as the ‘’Little Rock Nine,’’ attempted to enter Central High School, segregationists threatened to hold protests and physically block the students from entering the school ’’(Source B). This shows that all of the segregationists did not believe the fortunate African American students were as smart or worthy of going to school with Caucasians. As well, this exhibits how much anti-negros would do just to prevent what they thought was wrong from happening, which included violence.In addition, even though most people disagreed with the ‘’Little Rock Nine’’ from going to school, a few agreed,’’The rest of the country seemed to side with the black students...For the next few months, the African American students attended school under armed supervision.Even so, they faced physical and verbal abuse from their white peers’’(Source B).This demonstrates how people got together and protested along with the African American students on how the segregationists were being racist and treating them like they were nonexistent.This also shows how the segregationists were ignoring the fact that others were disagreeing with them, but they were mainly focused on being inconsiderate and treating the ‘’Little Rock Nine’’ poorly because they were Negros. For example, a little black woman who refused to stand on a bus showed civil disobedience because she believed in the rights of African Americans. This woman’s name was Rosa Parks. In 1955, on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man. This act went against all social norms of the time and sparked the majority of civil rights debates. Through her act of civil disobedience, change occurred, and the first steps toward rights for African Americans were being taken.
When looking at a picture of such controversy it brings emotions of sadness and anger. When the nine black students tried to attend an all-white school on September 4, 1957, although they had the right, they were denied. Not only were they denied the right from the students but from adults and people of political influence in Arkansas. The Little Rock Nine were part of a major part of the Civil Rights movement. The Little Rock Nine impacted civil right in their own time as well as today by leaving their schools, their friends, and their security behind to make history and a great impact. This case became known all over the world as it turned into an open resistance of justice and law against personal prejudices and absurd racial bigotry: “The Little Rock Nine are a group of African-American students who were prevented from attending Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas during 1957. They step into all-white school and got beat, but they also made a statement that they were not backing down until they and everybody else got what they deserve. They continue to fight for one thing which was that everybody has equal educational opportunity.
On May 17, 1954 the case of Brown v. Board of Education, “declared that segregation in schools of black and white students would no longer be constitutional.” After this law was passed, in 1957 nine African American students enrolled in a predominantly white school in Little Rock, Arkansas. When word got out that, nine students, Melba Pattillo, Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Minnijean Brown, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls, Jefferson Thomas, Gloria Ray, and Thelma Mothershed were attending Little Rock Central High School, the governor of Arkansas sent the Arkansas National Guard to the school. Many of the students that already attended the school also barricaded the doors so they would not enter the school. The students started “throwing stones, spat on them, shouted and yelled death threats.”
The school system was not always the way it is now. It was not schools that were mixed with every race under one building sitting next to each other getting the same education. In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for schools to be segregated, in the case of Brown v Board of Education. This paper will argue that the Little Rock nine played a pivotal moment in history by leading to desegregation and bringing into light the social injustices during that time for African American students. The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine African American students who were planning to attend Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas in 1957. According to Elizabeth Carney’s article, “Acts Of Courage”, “In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation would be illegal”. Once the Supreme Court ruled it illegal, nine black students decided they were going to integrate central high school. Americans across the country had to come face to face with the horrible realities that were racism and inequality (Carney). The Little Rock Nine was not formed only to highlight the racial imbalance of segregation in school, but to also give the nine students a good and fair education.
How has the Little Rock Nine affected the fairness and equality of society? Racial segregation has been a major obstacle and challenge for people of color in the United States. Segregated states placed constitutional laws that restricted certain areas of residence for people of color and ban black people to share access to services and public facilities including hospitals and schools that white people took part in. The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine black students who were enrolled in an all white school.
The NAACP let in 9 black students at Little Rock and they were called the Little Rock Nine. Even though many people fought to not have them there, President Eisenhower fought to keep them there. This led to an uproar from the community and a lot of violence. At one point the governor even has to call out the national guard and the students had to be escorted to class by police. By the end of the film, only one black student is left to graduate
When nine young African American students volunteered to enroll they were met by the Arkansas national guard soldiers who blocked their way. Along with the national guard these nine students were surrounded by an angry white mob who were screaming harsh comments about this situation. On this day not one of nine African American students gained entrance to the school that day. Along with came a later situation where a Air Force veteran named James Meredith sought to enroll in the all-white University of Mississippi known as “Ole Miss” where he was promptly sent away. However in the September of 1962 with the help of the NAACP Meredith won a federal court case that ordered the university to desegregate.
“The most oppressive feature of black secondary education was that southern local and state governments, through maintaining and expanding the benefits of public secondary education for white children, refused to provide public high school facilities for black children.” In sum, Anderson uses this chapter to build a broader argument about the “separate, but equal doctrine” under Plessy v. Ferguson that mandated segregation. More specifically, he situates this argument through case studies in Lynchburg, VA and Little Rock, AR. In the culminating chapter, James Anderson discusses the emergence of historically black universities and black land-grant colleges.
History is a comprised of individual choices. Those choices can work to include or exclude others. In 1957 nine black students chose to integrate Little Rock Central High School and a whole group of white kids worked to exclude them. There are three sets of primary source documents about the expulsion of one of these Little Rock Nine, Minnijean Brown. These document sets change one’s thinking about this expulsion because the first documents suggest that she was expelled for dumping chili on a white boy; the second sets of documents suggest that she was expelled because she retaliated against a white girl; and the final documents state that the expulsion was because she was acting as if she belonged at Central High School.
Even though the media displayed false information about the 1957 integration of Little Rock Central High School it changed peoples views on segregation. In A Mighty Long Way Little Rock, Arkansas nine African American students wanted to go to a well educated high school but they do not understand why so many people are angered that they are just getting a better education. During the integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957, the media illuminated certain events and painted an inaccurate or incomplete picture of other events. The media illuminates many important events that show how racist white people are treating black people and showing people in the North who are against segregation and support integration.
Rosa Parks’s influence on the fight for equality was arguably the most impactful of all the leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks first embarked on her Civil Rights journey by becoming involved with the NAACP. The author of the History website page on Rosa Parks claims, “in December 1943 Rosa also joined the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP, and she became chapter secretary” (Rosa Parks). Rosa started out as a follower, but became dedicated to the organization so she ran for a board position. About ten years later, the famous Rosa Parks story took place in Montgomery.
President Eisenhower, in his address to the country, more specifically the people of Arkansas, discusses the inevitable situation involving racial segregation occurring in Arkansas. Eisenhower’s purpose is to convey to the country that he will fight to preserve the decision that the Supreme Court came to on racial segregation. He adopts a personal tone in order to convey to the people of Arkansas that he understands how they feel in this situation. After establishing that he will do whatever is necessary to protect the rights of the students and connects with the Arkansas people by addressing the fact that his decision wasn’t based on his personal beliefs, Eisenhower shifts his focus to validating the citizen’s feelings of anger and feeling slighted. Eisenhower through logically crafted arguments asserts that he will use his powers to ensure the students’ rights aren’t withheld.
When Rosa Parks got an arrest, it had started a resolution. When Rosa didn't get up from her seat for a white man, the driver called the police and arrested her. So at her court date, the African Americans had started a boycott. The Africans have to seat in the back of the bus in the colored section. Because Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man; she started a revolution and the fight for equal rights for black people.
