Essay On Women's Rights In The Mid-1800s

The women's rights movement was very important to women in the 1800’s. Women were fighting to gain momentum in society and gender equality. Women wanted to have the same rights as men did and the same power because they were getting tired of how their lives were being unfairly treated in society. All women wanted was to be allowed to live life in an atmosphere of religious freedom, having a voice in the government, and living free of lifelong enslavement by another person. Since women were treated poorly since the time period of the American Revolution, when the patriots fought to win their freedom from tyranny, women thought it was unfair since they hadn't gained freedom for themselves.

The women’s rights movement in the 1900’s fought for women’s right to vote and equality, for the most part. Women of color and women of different religions were sometimes excluded and Alice Paul, the leader of the National Women’s Party was no exception “Paul 's charismatic speaking and organizing abilities won her and the National Woman 's Party many supporters, but her domineering elitism, aloofness, anti-Semitism, and dilution of black women 's participation in the suffrage fight evoked criticism from others” (“Commentary on Alice Paul”). So, my advice to Alice is when fighting for equality you can not forget about groups of people and dismiss them. They deserve the same rights as you. this way, in the future it will make it easier for these groups of people that are already fighting against injustice to improve their lives, instead of fighting against what leaders of the time say.

Antebellum women were an important part of the struggle for equality. In the early nineteenth century, many people believed in separate spheres for men and women. The public sphere was for men, and the domestic sphere was for women. Women began challenging the separate spheres by getting involved in the church and in public reform movements.

In 1860 women were mistreated, especially black women. Women in the 1800s were treated unfairly compared to white men. Men saw women as angelic creatures and that they shouldn't be/ capable of being voters, legislators, free traders, divines, physicians, and lawyers. Until 1837, no college in the United States accepted women as regular students. Some women teachers were underpaid.

The American Revolution fundamentally changed American society politically, socially, and economically in 1775-1800, like women 's rights changing, Americans making peace with the Indians, religious freedom, and the government controlling the people. The first change in American society was rights for the women in America. During the American Revolution the women were at home working and keeping the farm running while the men were fighting in the war (Doc. A).

A woman, as a wife and mother, has many roles and responsibilities that are often overlooked by both current and past generations. While one may think they can identify the main roles and expectations of a woman, there are often many that are unnoticed. Overtime, the tasks that women would do on a daily basis have changed drastically due to the pushing of equal rights leading in the direction of careers outside the home. However, most women have a compelling nature that leaves some roles remaining the same.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, women began to move to big cities by themselves, like Chicago, in order to find jobs. This was because they had gained independence, but that meant that they were going to be on their own for the first time. Women were naive and unaware to certain aspects of the world because they had never experienced freedom like this before. Their lack of knowledge about being on their own is one of the reasons why they were so susceptible to Dr. H.H. Holmes. The women were weak and vulnerable, many of them taking jobs where they worked for men.

Throughout history discrimination has had a negative impact on people and has cause certain groups of people to suffer. Discrimination can be against people of different race, religion, gender and sexuality and in the late 1800’s women were one of the groups that were discriminated. Women had to fight hard to obtain the rights they now have in the 21st century and many of the women who fought for equal rights didn’t get to experience those rights since laws in their favor weren’t passed until years and years of fighting. In the late 1800’s American women were discriminated because they were not granted the same rights as men in the workforce, women had to be obedient to their husbands in their marriage and society had certain norms that women

The women of this movement were fighting for something they believed they deserve. Because of the Seneca Falls Convention and the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolution, women were able to express their own opinions. The women’s rights movement led to many different events, impacted other countries, and created a new amendment. The feminist efforts in the mid 1800s were successful enough to allow women to take on occupations and educations they weren’t able to obtain

The life of Women in the late 1800s. Life for women in the 1800s began to change as they pushed for more rights and equality. Still, men were seen as better than women, this way of thinking pushed women to break out from the limitations imposed on their sex. In the early 1800s women had virtually no rights and ultimately were not seen as people but they rather seen as items of possession, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that women started to gain more rights. The Civil War actually opened opportunities for women to gain more rights, because with many of the men gone to war women were left with the responsibilities that men usually fulfilled during that time period.

After the Civil War, women were willing to gain the same rights and opportunities as men. The war gave women the chance to be independent, to live for themselves. Women’s anger, passion, and voice to protest about what they were feeling was the reason of making the ratification of the 19th amendment, which consisted of giving women the right to vote. One of the largest advancement of that era was the women’s movement for the suffrage, which gave them the reason to start earning

Women in the Progressive Era The Progressive Era was a time of change across America, a time when the country chose to reform into an industrialized urban country. Prosperity was widespread across America, so people turned to social issues to try to expand. Minorities in particular became a focus of this time period, and everyone tried to find a way to integrate them into society.

In the 1920s and 30s, men did not treat women with much respect, and men did not allow women to do anything, other than be a housewife. Men took charge of women, and if women did earn any money their husband would take it away from them. Women did not have any rights, and nothing was done to change that for a long time. As women did not have a say, they continued to do as they were told and lacked a voice.

Women’s Suffrage Movement If you had lived in the 1800s, would you have fought for Women’s Rights or would you have decided to be a bystander? Throughout history women have always been ruled by men. At the start of the 1800s, women would have had only one right and that was being a housewife. Although women had no rights, women later raised their voices in the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

Throughout history, women have gone from having no rights at all to very little rights in the working field to finally being treated equal to man. However, even today women are still viewed as being the minority. Women had been perceived as evil human beings who were considered weak. Being a wife and mother were women’s most significant professions. Later, women slowly spoke up and earned the right to work, but was still limited on what they participated in.
