How someone's worst fear could save their life? I'm here to tell you it can happen, and it happened to me. 15 million Americans suffer from social anxiety, and nearly 90% of all people feel stage fright, these fears come from evolution. Before the modern era living as a group was a basic survival skill, and separation of any kind was a death sentence, this fear of being separated may have evolved into the fear of public speaking. This makes sense, because when you get anxiety from put in a room full of people but being forced to stand alone and talk to these people, on a deeper level you most likely are afraid of the audience rejecting you. A study done in 2009 by psychologist Matthias Wieser also shows that when you enter a state of social …show more content…
I am one of the 15 million Americans that suffer from social anxiety and an extreme fear of public speaking, however this is the exact thing that saved my life. My family has been involved with life theatre for as long as I can remember, my father went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, my uncle helps run a theatre troops, and I starred in my first show at the age of four. Naturally, the "theatre bug" bit me as well and I started really getting into it at the age of 13. Now, we all have our niche, mine is theatre, literature, and music, yours may be sports, drawing, dancing, playing an instrument, writing, or anything that makes you feel good, I didn't fit into any of those categories, I played soccer and I was good but it didn't feel like my home, I tried band and found out I can't play an instrument to save my life, I was great at singing, in all-state chorus, tried to start a band (that went over horribly), I was good at drawing but not great and there wasn't any kind of art outlet available to me, so I went searching for something that called to me and my father suggested that I audition for Annie The Musical at our local theatre
The 1930’s consisted of severe drought and dust storms that prevailed across US plains, creating what is known today as the Dust bowl. This environmental disaster turned soil to dust that winds picked up and spread into dark clouds over the dry regions. Thus, creating suffer endearing conditions for families, their horses, and cattle. In The Worst Hard Time, Timothy Egan describes the affected areas and shares the tragic stories of settlers who lived through this time of suffering. Though this devastation is widely viewed as a horrible climatic event, it is important to understand the human ignorance largely responsible for causing the suffered disaster.
In the introduction to Kendall Phillips’ book, “Projected Fears,” he discusses “horror films that made such an impression on American culture that they became instantly recognizable and, indeed, redefined the notion of what a horror film is.” (Phillips 3). This list of movies includes many favorites, such as Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Scream. Phillips later states his thesis, “...my argument in this book is that these [movies] are the most ‘successful’ and ‘influential’ in American history and that their level of success and influence can be correlated to broader cultural anxieties into which they somehow tapped” (Phillips 3).
In Daniel Gardner’s The Science of Fear: How the Culture of Fear Manipulates Your Brain, chapter nine which is titled “Crime and Perception” is about child abductions and the actual probability of a child getting kidnapped. The author claims that the tabloids, the government, and the media relays news using horrifying pictures. Which encourages a gut reaction instead of providing the facts that allow people to assess the situation causing them think and react based on head. In addition, the author accuses the media of not giving the public enough time to process the information given, in most circumstances the statistics are showed briefly or are viewed at the end of television broadcasting and the facts, most of the time, are not even explained.
Fear can cause people to do a things they wouldn 't do if they were not scared, like when people found out that in the medicine running out and they started throwing stuff and going crazy, They automatically stop thinking irrationally and you overreact to the first thing that comes to their mind. You get scared and you think of the worst thing that can happen, like the people were running out of food and were scared of what’s was going on, they thought they were going to die. Everyone was scared and people were trying and doing everything they could to help themselves and their love ones like Dr.Cheever gives Anthony roger son his vaccine and tells his wife to leave. People like in the moves start to panic like when the sickest first started
After being chosen as the President of National Honor Society, the most active club at my school, one of my duties was inducting the new members each year. I remember the butterflies in my stomach as I looked out at all the NHS members and their parents sitting in the huge auditorium. My principal and head of school were both keenly listening to me speak as I prayed not to stutter on any words. However, with every word that left my mouth, I felt my level of confidence rising. After finishing off strong and hearing the roar of applause, I realized that effective public speaking is a vital leadership skill that I definitely
One of the things I believe has contributed to this is growing up being on stage and being comfortable. When you are little, you're fearless, so starting to do something that a lot of people fear at such a fearless age and then growing from there, it never really gave me an opportunity or reason to fear being on stage or performing in front of people.” “Through dance I have built a lot of strong relationships. I have built a lifelong connection with my dance teachers as well as had some great times with my dance team. I have had the privilege of getting to dance with some girls for 12 plus years and others just a few years
This paper is a brief description of Agoraphobia; the symptoms of agoraphobia are related to panic attacks but Agoraphobia is the anxiety about being in places where escape might be difficult or embarrassing or in which help may not be available should a panic attack should develop. The Symptoms include heart palpitations, rapid breathing or shortness of breath, blurred vision, dizziness, and racing thoughts. Often these symptoms are thought to be a heart attack by the individual, and many cases are diagnosed in hospital emergency rooms.
I have been in this group for 5 years now and when I perform no one would ever know that I had a “speech difficulty”. I have performed not only all around Cleveland, not only have I performed all across America but I have also performed all the way in France for students, ambassadors, and even delegates. I am not trying to boast, I am trying to say that only you can label yourself. Last year I had the opportunity to be a part of the FBI’s FAIT (Future Agents In Training) program, I have been in the newspaper and even on the news multiple times.
Do you ever wonder what college students fears might be? Do you ever wonder what is going through their mind? In the article “The Student Fear Factor” by Rebecca Cox, it explains many different factors that a college student might be going through. The article gives many point of views from other students and what their thoughts about college was. There are some students who either are incoming high school students or are returning which can be a big fear for them the most because they don’t know what to expect from the campus vibe or even what their teacher can be like.
I am extremely shy and try not to talk to people I do not know, but if I become comfortable around someone then I will talk a lot more. I believe that true friends are one of the most important things to have in life. As a result, I would rather have a small group of well known friends as opposed to a large group of somewhat known friends. When speaking, I feel that the smaller the group I am trying to talk to, the harder it is. For example, talking to new people at school causes me to feel stressed mainly because the people I am talking to will probably know somewhat about me, but public speaking comes easy to me because I know that the majority of the people I speak to will not speak to me ever
Carolyn Rodriguez believes one can outsmart his or her brain, as she presents that, “If you keep at [facing your fear], you’ll be amazed at what you can do”(Rodriguez 14). Rodriguez’s point is that by facing one’s fears they will be enabled to live life to its fullest. This is substantial, since it conveys how it is imperative to face one’s fears to reap its full benefits. In fact, Rodriguez also elaborates on how facing one’s fears can actually improve his or her life. As Rodriguez suggests that, “The more we face our fear, the stronger the links become between our biggest challenges and safety”(Rodriguez 6).
David Carbonell is one such psychologist who happens to specialize in anxiety studies. Chicago-based Carbonell runs a workshop specifically tailored to the needs of patients suffering with a fear of public speaking. Carbonell makes heavy use of improv techniques in this workshop. It helps that Carbonell is a member of a local improv troupe made up entirely of psychologists. Due to his studies, Carbonell believes that the strongest factor of this fear comes from the negative and self-critical thought of the speaker.
Living with Social Anxiety Disorder By: Brandi Jester Thesis: Have you ever been excited about going out and canceled at the last minute? Had to tell someone that you were not feeling good or that you could not go because you had a last-minute emergency? When the real reason you can not go is because you did not want to leave the house is because you’re anxious about the people you will run in to. The crippling thought of having to speak to others, how you will look to them, and how they judge you.

As students, presentations are something that is required in most classes yet, students do not see themselves as public speakers. Throughout high school and now in college, I have had to present material in 80 percent of the classes that I have taken. Presenting was, and still is something that I struggle with no matter how big or how small the group is that I am presenting to. I knew that Public Speaking was a required class for me so, rather than putting it off, I decided to go ahead and get it out of the was as soon as possible. Speaking in front of people is out of my comfort zone.
