Growing up i always struggled with coming to terms with how i was raised and my environment. I was raised in Brentwood, New York, in a community commonly known for gang violence and troubled teens. It was a very scary place at a young age i remember all the extra lockdown drills we had, all the kids crying because they were scared of the gunshot they just heard whether it be a few blocks down or just outside our school window. I remember kids coming to school crying because of the gang war that happened on their street the night before. I remember my principle having to walk me to the school gate because the creepy old man wouldn't leave 7 year old me alone and how i was afraid of just belonging to a community like that.
I remember being in

We moved to Greenspoint, Texas, it had almost the same gang violence rate as brentwood the only exception is i didn't have have my family protecting me and having a father who had 2 jobs and was never home was hard to happen to me at 13. When i went to Texas a series of unfortunate events came to be, first my close friend died of cancer a week after my birthday and i had spoken to him the day of my birthday which he told me he was doing better and i realized he had his reasons to tell me that he was going to be okay. the second unfortunate event was i was sexually assaulted in a place i thought i was safe, i thought because we moved, we would be in a new safe haven but boy was i wrong. I was sexually assaulted by a fellow student at my old school and third unfortunate event my father couldn't make the money to get a house for the family so he made a deal with my birth mother, if he sends me to live with her, she’ll give him the down payment to rent a house which is around 2,000 dollars. it was a decision done without my input. My mother lived in guatemala with my other 6 siblings and grandmother. She was a wealthy businesswoman. When my birth father was still alive, they were a drug dealer duo, very powerful in the country of guatemala.
Golden light from a Texas sunset illuminating stark white fields of cotton, green and yellow tractors leisurely making their way down the middle of Main Street, and a community that will always support you are just a few things one might experience if you came to my hometown in rural Texas. Matador, Texas isn't just a dusty old town in the middle of nowhere, it is a town that no matter who you are or what you are trying to do, hard work is always required; it is where I grew up from the day I was born, spent lazy summer days reading and writing abstract stories without distractions of people, traffic, or even the ever-present cell phone, and where I learned about a whole other side of society, one where the community gathers together for anything
I would do anything, in order to survive. There would be no limit to what I would do to survive. I have always been known as the survivor. Lets just say I was all alone, no one, no one else in Laredo. There are no power lines that are working.
Hearing the sirens of the ambulance and from police cars growing up made me think about how I will continue to be afraid of an ambulance and police car sirens because Wyandotte County has a high crime rate and sometimes I thought about not evening stepping out of my house. Right at the moment that I step outside my house, I wouldn't know if I would come back. No ones life is guaranteed so throughout my high school years I was very strict on myself in regards to hanging out with people and with which people I can rely upon. From school, I went directly to my house because I thought it wouldn't be safe for me to be out especially in a Wyandotte County. I always had to have that in the back of my head because of the area I live in.
The community I grew up in central Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use our skills to be of service to others, which wasn’t hard to do growing up in Austin with its many avenues to become involved and take care of the community, whether it was helping to direct families through the Trail of Lights at Zilker Park during the winter or raise money for educational programs for underprivileged kids in the area through working the concession stands at the University of Texas at Austin. It was this collaborative mindset that Austin
Dynai Gonzales Texas History April 23, 2023 Texas History In 1845 Texas enters the union as the 28th state. Texas had been a sovereign nation since 1836; it had previously been a part of Mexico. Texas has sought U.S. annexation ever since it gained its independence. Due to political disagreements regarding slavery, the procedure, however, took close to 10 years.
Texas’s geography is diverse throughout its regions. Texas has 4 regions, the mountain and basin, the Coastal plains, the North Central plains, and the Great plains. Each region is a different type of geography unique to its own. These regions also have their own big cities that have their own characteristics. Every city has its own focus on what they want to make in that city.
The winter before my 12th birthday, my parents decided that moving to Florida was a good idea, and although it 's a lovely state for tourism, Florida wasn 't the best place for a new start for us. My dad 's side of the family has lived in Pennsylvania for generations, so the move seemed to be a fresh start and an opportunity to settle down for good with nothing from the past interfering. Florida was supposedly cheaper, more child-friendly, and the perfect place for people to redeem themselves. Unfortunately, none of these tales held any truth because when we finally found an apartment, it was overpriced, dangerous, and filled with many others with the same idea as us.
I live at 11906 Connan Court, Austin Texas which would be my absolute location. My relative location is north Lamar Blvd. west of I35 south of Parmer lane. Before you pass the Brent wood church you take an immediate right and then another right at the first street you come to and it will be the second house on the right. We live on a cul-de-sac which me and my siblings play tag around.
Everything 's bigger in Texas, as denoted by the vast land composing the state of Texas. The culture, government, economy, language, and history can be traced back to the 19th century, to a time when Texas was a state governed by the country of Mexico. Texas land has been occupied by indigenous Americans, claimed by Spanish conquistadors, snatched by Mexican troops and placed in a little red, white and green box where it was instructed to remain and look pretty. The war that declared Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821, granted Mexico the territory claimed by Spain, also known as Tejas. It was a part of Coahuila y Tejas, governed by Mexico between 1821 and 1836.
When I was 14 I had to move to San Clemente, California. I had already recently moved temporarily to Texas while a house was made ready for us on the military base. “The house is ready!” my mother had said excitedly, after being on the phone for a few minutes. “It’s time to go back?”
Texas is a great state to be in. At times I rather live in Texas then any other state. My allergies are bad with this Texas weather. It changes so often we never know what each day will be. I was in Colorado and New York and my breathing and allergies were fine.
I was also adopted from Guatemala and my parents got divorced when I was little. It was just my mom, brother, and myself when we moved here to Long Beach, CA. For some reason I always felt like the black sheep of the family. I never did good in school and even got held back a grade because I was always absent. My focus for sure was not education.
As I reflect over my life, I am inundated with memories. Memories of verbal abuse, mental abuse, and emotional abuse. Memories of not only just feeling alone but also being alone. Memories of being left on the doorsteps of the Department of Human Services along with my two younger siblings at the apex of my senior year. Memories of being voted to be on the homecoming court, memories of making the cheerleading squad.

The majority of my mother's extended family lives in Texas, so I have travelled to Texas many times and have become familiar with its people and culture. When it came time for me to begin looking at colleges, I researched schools in Texas and concluded Rice would be worth a visit, due to its small size, caliber of engineering program, and beautiful campus. I first visited campus last year, went on a tour, and attended the information session. It was there I learned about the Residential College System, and realized Rice would be for me. It promotes the exposure to an array of backgrounds and diversity, a concept that would not occur to this extent at any other school I have looked at.
