Disclaimer: This paper will not discuss the argument of whether abortion should be legal or not. The pro-choice/pro-life debate is multi-faceted and I believe where you stand has a lot to do with your core fundamental beliefs. According to Dr. Jesudason, a nephrologist at the Royal Adelaide hospital, “abortion is arguably one of the most polarizing issues in American politics today” (Jesudason 1). I will however, be discussing the importance of accessible and affordable family planning and the impact it can have on a country and a woman’s life. Naturally, abortion is one aspect of Family Planning so it will be discussed in regards to my argument. I neither endorse nor condone abortion. Introduction Since the day it was founded Planned Parenthood has been under attack. Recently, legislators have requested a massive audit of the organization, and others have demanded the total defunding of the organization. The history of Family Planning has been a long hard struggle, but ultimately it is valuable to the human rights of American people. The fact that Planned Parenthood provides abortion as a minor part of their services should not cause legislators to make it any less accessible. Planned Parenthood is valuable and funding should continue …show more content…
Some were interested in it for eugenics; some thought FP could promote social progress by playing a role in the emancipation of women; others believed it would reduce mother and child mortality; while yet others thought it would benefit the individual, the family, and the nation. At the Seventh Annual birth Control Conference in 1930, it was decided that FP was an essential part of public health and an aspect of preventative medicine that should be given due consideration; that the knowledge on contraception was the best way of fighting abortion; and that instructions in technique of birth control should be part of all medical curricula (Claeys
One of the most effective and crucial programs for women’s health is currently under attack by the so-called president of the United States, Donald Trump. In an attempt to convince the people that he is willing to stand up for everyone, including the unborn, but instead, Mr. Trump is oppressing women and taking away their rights as human beings. Without Planned Parenthood, 2.5 million men and women would be left without affordable, high-quality health care. One in five women have visited a Planned Parenthood in their lifetime. The fact that all of the care and help Planned Parenthood gives can all be lost due to something as petty as abortion services is almost laughable.
Therefore, logically, these services should not be shut down for purely religious reasons. Yet even so, Warren clarifies that the organization at its simplest supports a women with “wrenching, intimate, and private medical decisions” such as PAP tests, cancer screenings, and much more. With such conviction, it is clear that decisions made at Planned Parenthood are very personal, private, and important matters that could save a woman’s life. Denying a woman access to this life changing medical assistance found at Planned Parenthood would be exceedingly unreasonable and unjust. In particular, Planned Parenthood continues to be an obvious example of a helpful and truly good association through all its services including helping mothers and their babies with “prenatal care, better infant nutrition, head-start classes, and medical research on medical abnormalities. . . .”
There are two very distinct sides that continuously argue over the funding for planned parent, both sides present very well organized arguments; however, there is pros and cons to both sides. One might ask what exactly is Planned Parenthood. Several people are under the impression that this program only deals with abortion; but, this is wrong. Activist that support Planned Parenthood believe that it is the government’s responsibility to provide government aid to help assist the noninsured deal with the conflicts that are a result of giving birth. Those who are against the government providing funds for to help the program Planned Parenthood, tend to be pro-life activist, who are against abortions.
Why Planned Parenthood Should not be Defunded by the Government “Trying to block women from getting access to contraception or defunding Planned Parenthood is completely nonsensical from a policy standpoint.” - Richard Carmona, american physician and nurse. This is exactly why Planned Parenthood should not be defunded. It offers many things from contraception, abortion, cancer screenings and preventions along with much more. Also, if they were to be defunded and abortions could no longer go on, many more unplanned pregnancies would happen and the cost of welfare would escalate a lot.
According to the article “Reproductive Rights”, “In addition to the highly controversial issue of abortion, reproductive rights encompass the ability to access contraception, sex education, surrogate motherhood, in vitro fertilization, and forced and voluntary sterilization”(1). Defunding Planned Parenthood defunds the opportunity for men and women to have these rights that all Americans are given. According to Special Interest Group Profiles for Students, “At a PPFA health center, clients may receive family-planning services such as counseling, abortions or abortion referral, screening for sexually transmitted diseases, contraception or voluntary sterilization, sex education, and adoption referrals”(2). Without these simple reproductive rights families are forced into situations that could be avoided completely. According to ACLU, “But laws that make it difficult if not impossible for a woman to get an abortion if she needs one, particularly if she is poor, are increasing at an alarming pace”(2).
After hearing these facts’, you can better understand what Planned Parenthood is and that they contribute way more help to are society then just abortions, and by offering these health benefits we would keep cutting back the number of unplanned pregnancies and that would cut back the number of
Planned Parenthood is a topic that is continuously discussed in correlation with the concept of money as many believe that it “...emphasizes abortions instead of preventative care” (Attira). Because of birthrights, abortions, and the controversy that surrounds such issues, many individuals believe that the government should not be responsible for providing funding. Therefore, actually defunding Planned Parenthood is often brought up as a solution to the highly-debated consensus of government-funded healthcare services. Although many believe that creating a barrier between opinion and action is a positive push, actually defunding the program would be more catastrophic than perceived. Defunding Planned Parenthood would mean blocking and preventing individuals from receiving the health care that they are reliant on.
Planned Parenthood is a National issue fighting for abortion access, giving women facing an unintended pregnancy must have access to safe, legal abortion services. Birth control and the fact all people deserve access to birth control and other preventive care, health care equality and the idea all people should have equal access to reproductive health care. For years politicians in Congress and statehouses across the country have attacked Planned Parenthood’s patients’ access to care. But I believe Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide high quality, affordable reproductive health care, to 2.4 million people across the country. When politicians talk about defunding Planned Parenthood, they really mean depriving patients who depend on public
Regardless of being against Planned Parenthood's services, people should at least realize the domino effect defunding the organization would cause. Millions would lose access to these conveniently located clinics for all-around women's health and family planning services, including financially burdened college students. College students have an increased need for contraceptives. Young adults and college students should not be deprived of affordable health care services.
Three percent of Planned Parenthood’s patient care is dedicated to abortions. However when most people think of Planned Parenthood abortion is the first thing to come to mind. People fail to realize that 35 percent of Planned Parenthoods patient care is dedicated to contraception, and 35 percent is dedicated to treatment of sexually transmitted disease (STD) treatments. Not to mention 16 percent of their care is put towards to cancer screening and treatment. People have come to the conclusion that Planned Parenthood needs to be defunded because they provide abortions, and also because of their involvement in selling fetuses to stem cell research.
Despite the numerous accusations that the organization has faced in the past years, Planned Parenthood and other similar groups may have been providing an effective means on educating and making available the use of protection and prevention of unwanted pregnancies. This is demonstrated by numbers released that in 2014, abortion rates in the United States have dropped to a record low of 14.6 per 1000 since 1973. US women are having abortions at the lowest rate on record since Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion. In fact, the rate has been steadily declining over the past three decades from its peak in the 1980’s.
Before Roe v. wade the number of deaths from illegal abortions was around 5000 and in the 50s and 60s the number of illegal abortions ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. These illegal abortions pose major health risks to the life of the woman including damage to the bladder, intestines as well as rupturing of the uterus. The choice to become a mother must be given to the woman most importantly because it’s her body, her health, and she will be taking on a great responsibility. A woman’s choice to choose abortion should not be restricted by anyone; there are multiple reasons why abortion will be the more sensible decision for the female.
In 1960, the first birth control pill was put on the market. This was the first time a woman’s reproductive health was in her own control. Ever since the 1900’s women have been fighting for the right to their own reproductive rights (“The Fight for Reproductive Rights”). With the upcoming presidential election the right to obtain birth control and other contraceptives for women could be jeopardized, and taken out of the control of the woman. Thus, the history of birth control, the statistics of how it affects today’s society, why women should have the ability to obtain it easily, and how if outlawed it would not only hurt women, but also the economy are all important topics in the women’s rights movement and very relevant in modern day society.
Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that provides medical care to men, women, and children. Despite contrary belief, Planned Parenthood is not only an abortion-based service. This organization treats “42 % STD/STI Testing and Treatment, 34% Contraceptives, 3% Abortion Services, 9% Cancer Screenings and Prevention, 11% Other Women 's Health Services, and 1% Other Services” (Planned Parenthood). In fact, Planned Parenthood is a main source of medical protection for low-income families. Furthermore, the main concern conservatives have with this firm is abortion services, meanwhile the government does not pay for abortion procedures.
Doris Gudino Professor Chounlamountry Political Science 1 27 July 2015 Pro-Choice Anyone? A woman has, undoubtedly, the freedom to procreate, but once a woman chooses to retreat from that freedom, a commotion arises. Abortion is a woman’s choice for many reasons. It’s her body, therefore, no one else can decide for said person.
