According to research done around the world, there are over seven billion people on the planet and over three billion are active Internet users. That indicates over forty-five percent of the population is comprised by internet users and the numbers are growing as we speak. In the allegory of “The Cave” Socrates describes the light and shadows which hurt our eyes and this is relevant because in society today we are so constantly buried in the shadows of the internet of social media, advertisement, and T.V. that we forget the reality and truth around us. Individuals around the world revolve their lives around the internet each day and they end up losing themselves and the truth of fabricated information. With losing ourselves, we start to believe …show more content…
The reality behind these sites is disturbing; thousands of people are being cyber bullied each day and are led to commit suicide. Individuals find it necessary to embarrass, slander, threaten, and insult other individuals on these websites. Insulting individuals on any social website can lead to the victim to harming themselves. Teenagers around the world bully others to feel a sense of power or to stay popular in school. This reasoning is unacceptable, you shouldn’t have to knock someone down to feel powerful or to stay popular. However, teenagers would make Facebook or Instagram pages to mock and slander the victim. Making a Facebook page of the victim allows anyone to view the page and add their own comment. Being bullied on social media can affect a person's reputation, and self-esteem. They may find it hard to communicate with others and numerous victims will feel as if they have no choice but to commit suicide. With bullying comes many forms of harassment. Girlfriends and boyfriends can be harassed on social media sites after breaking up with their significant other or while dating someone. You can be harass by anyone on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and even Vine. On Facebook and Twitter, a person can post a status about a specific person for the entire world to see, by the time the individual sees the post it’s too late because by that time people are already gossiping. All that individual could do is report the post as inappropriate. However, on Instagram, Vine, and Snapchat you are required to post pictures or videos. Pictures can be more damaging than words because you are able to see the image in many different perspectives and form your own conclusion of what’s going. Like they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Different opinions of what is shown can lead to people judging you and
SOLVING PROBLEMS As Bradbury describes the citizens “like gray animals peering from electric caves,” (139) He makes an allusion to Plato 's Allegory of the Cave, found in Book VII of "The Republic" where Plato states “Life is like being chained up in a cave forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall.” The purpose of Bradbury’s allusion is to make the readers take notice of the citizen’s live styles- absorbed within their tv walls in ignorance of the ongoings and status of the world they live in. Moreover, Bradbury warns readers not to get sidetracked or so obsessed with entertainment to become oblivious to the ongoings of the world around them, and the problems within their society. “ I 'm afraid of children my own age.
Skepticism or Justified True Belief Elizabeth McIver ID: L25662046 PHIL 201 B06 Spring 2018 Abstract How do the Matrix, Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave”, and Descartes’ “Meditation 1 of the Things of Which We May Doubt” compare and contrast to each other? Also, can we truly depend on our senses to aid us in our quest for knowledge?
Is there a truer higher reality than what most people experience? This question can best be answered by examining the protagonist in both Allegory of the Cave by Plato and The Man Who Lived Underground by Richard Wright. The answer to this question, is very complex as it includes the definition of reality, how to measure the terms truer and higher, and the consensus of people’s experiences. because there is no way to prove that there is a truer higher reality beyond what most people experience, this statement is false. While there are multiple definitions of reality, the most accurate is the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.
In Ray Bradbury's “Fahrenheit 451”, the character Guy Montag is similar to the prisoner in “The Allegory of the Cave” because, Montag and the Prisoner were brought into the world with forced opinions and thoughts that shaped how they feel and think. Both Montag and the prisoner had nothing to look back on that showed a different opinion, so they were both stuck to believe anyone at face-value. These forced opinions however, were later changed after they were revealed by a character (the old man or Faber) and caused them to shed a whole new set of skin.
“The Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen, and A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt all have in common a person that is challenged by a group of people on their beliefs, ideas, as well as knowledge. In “The Allegory of the Cave”, one person is challenged based on his knowledge about the world outside the cave. Next, An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen, Dr. Thomas Stockmann is challenged by the people of his town on his belies of the water being contaminated that later is proven to be true because he sends a sample to be tested. Lastly, A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt, Thomas More is challenged by King Henry and his followers on his idea of divorce because he is dedicated to the Catholic Church which doesn’t approve of King Henry divorce. Furthermore, I believe Dr. Thomas Stockmann is a greater hero than Thomas More.
Living in the present era, the world is at our fingertips. In other words, technology has made it easier for us to digest ourselves into different worldly phenomenas, and become more open minded and well educated individuals. Social media is being used to spread messages, be up to date with events happening in the world and to thrust ourselves into the different worldly cultures. Although we may not realize it, social media is a key to help further open up our minds and possibly even question what we think is right, and see things from other individuals point of view. In 427-347 B.C.E, to further educate oneself and to become more open minded wasn’t as easy as today of course, but that did not stop Plato from trying.
Teens use social media apps like twitter, Facebook, Instagram, kik, and snapchat just to show off to their friends and what I don’t understand is why you would use social media to show off when you can do other things to show off like get good grades on your test, quiz’s, report cards, and progress reports. By using social media teens are becoming depressed and angry and even commenting suicide all because of cyber bullies on internet and social media sites like Facebook, kik, snapchat, Instagram, Myspace, and twitter. Also its not only teens that’s get cyber bullied some celebrities get cyber bullied to like Tamera Mowry-Housley when she tweeted about her political view she got attacked by all of her followers. Mostly it’s the teens that are getting bullied not that many people or celebrities are getting bully . Bullying takes place everyday some where in the Us mostly in school
Ray Bradbury born in 1920 to a middle class family. Bradbury went on to write and publish over five hundred pieces of literature. One of the novels he wrote was Fahrenheit 451, where he attempted to predict what the United States of America would look like in the future. The novel illustrates the idea of a totalitarian government and society burning books to stop the spread of knowledge, by following the development of the main character Guy Montag. Furthermore, the novel bring up the idea of Plato’s cave, in which Montag attempts to overcome the ideas of the society he grew up around.
Kids get bullied for some of the stupidest things on social media. A pair of shoes can be as cute as a butterfly, but since they’re fila ’s you get talked about. People think it’s cool to talk about people because they get laughs out of people. It’s not cool to bully people on social media because if they kill they self you can go to prison for cyber bullying.
In many aspects, the internet has shaped society today. Not only has the internet helped people with connecting to family and friends, it has also made it easier for people to do research ad or look information up. The internet can be a great investment however, nothing is worse that what it can do to another person. Bullying has become the internet’s worst creation. No one is safe on the internet, which is a huge problem.
20% of cyber bullied kids think about suicide, 1 and 10 attempt it. Cyberbullying is no longer just happening once in awhile to just a few kids. Cyberbullying is making kids kill themselves and way too many kids are being cyber bullied. There should be no cyberbullying in a chivalrous world, people should respect others way more than they do.
This is a common problem associated with social media. Moreover, people are harassed and bullied on a regular basis. This is because people are free to say and post anything no matter how hurting it is especially due to the fact that one is far away from the victim. References Fullbright, L. (2014). Tulsa serial rape suspect using fake Facebook page is arrested.
Cyberbullying videos, pictures, messages and rumours can be posted on social media websites anonymously can spread like wildfire online to many people out there using the social media. Some of the time it is also impossible to even trace down the source. It is also very hard for the victims to delete the inappropriate pictures, videos and messages after they have been posted online or sent as the people online could have already made a record of it or already saved it. The bully also only need a valid email address to create a fake profile online and bully without anyone knowing who is he. Because the comments and pictures are not related to their real account, they can do their bullying online freely without worrying about being exposed and without repercussions.
When we saying something nasty to someone online, we do not think about what it is doing to that person. For most bullies know they are the reason that victim is thinking of suicide as a way out. Thus, proves that cyberbullying is very dangerous. Thirdly, cyberbullying is linked to having mental problems. To illustrate, research shows that about 4% of victims have problems with some sort of mental illness or trust issues.
They can use any methods which may cause terrible damage for the sufferers’ mind, just to diminish the social status of whom they are bullying. In general, the goal to be achieved is raising and spreading their own power and dishonoring the others. Lastly, the motivation of online bullying is to ease the boredom. It may not surprising that the minority of perpetrators see this cruelty as the source of entertainment and others are too cowed to protest.
