Every person has their own definition of home. In the story “The Round Walls of Home,” Dianne Ackerman is saying her home is the earth. She uses the word “round” because the earth does not have walls like normal homes, but the walls are the outside of the earth, making it round in shape. When most people describe their home they would mention the color of the walls, what sorts of belongings, and how many rooms. But, Ackerman describes her home as a, “big, beautiful, blue, wet ball.”

The home is generally constructed as a place of ownership, where we feel secure enough to “remove our masks” that we wear when we present ourselves to the rest of the world (293). Our homes often reflect our own or our family’s identity and are indicative of our lifestyles. Casa Hogar los Angelitos (Home for Little Angles) Casa Hogar los Angelitos (CHLA) is an orphanage located in Manzanillo, Mexico. Currently home to 55 children ranging from 5 months to 23 years old. I was fortunate to visit CHLA for the first time in October of 2002. Prior to visiting CHLA I envisioned a place that was uncompassionate and industrial, as insinuated by the word orphanage. I quickly discovered I was very wrong.

“Foundation of Family” Family is the fundamental building block of all societies. It is all inclusive across generations and cultures. Based on the epic poem The Odyssey and current families today, we see that family is where we learn to love ourselves and each other, to bear one another’s burdens, to find meaning in our life and to give purpose to other’s lives, and to feel the value of being part of something greater than ourselves. Family is where we experience our biggest triumphs, deepest vulnerabilities, and where we have the greatest potential to do good.

Throughout generations cultural traditions have been passed down, alongside these traditions came language. The language of ancestors, which soon began to be molded by the tongue of newer generations, was inherited. Though language is an everlasting changing part of the world, it is a representation of one’s identity, not only in a cultural way but from an environmental standpoint as well. One’s identity is revealed through language from an environmental point of view because the world that one is surrounded with can cause them to have their own definitions of words, an accent, etc. With newer generations, comes newer forms of languages.

Frequently, we just pass by people and look down on them since they have no home; but who is to say they don’t have a home? Home is not the house you live in or the country you belong to. It is a place that incites certain feelings and those feeling are what makes a place home. The people on the streets with no “home” may simply find that anywhere in the world is where they call home. Home has two specific set of values that make it more than just a place which are privacy, and safety.

Home is My Life Burden Home. An alternative life kept from the outside world. Behind closed doors, it can be filled with tension but others may see happiness. Life outside my home is my escape from the anxiety that’s built from within the walls of what is called my home. But now, it’s not fully a family with just me and my mother.

Families can be regarded as the foundation of society. For Fleetwood (2012: 1), the importance of families is highlighted by the fact that it would be difficult to comprehend a society that could function without them. In addition, even though families and their compositions vary across societies and cultures, the family can be viewed as a universal social institution (Macionis & Plummer, 2012: 625. If one were to ask three random people on the street, it is likely they will receive three completely different answers to defining a family. The textbook definition of family according to the etymology dictionary is: “Origin in early 15c. “servants of a household” from Latin familia “family servants, domestics collectively, the servants in a household.” The traditional dictionary describes family in a more narrow fashion stating, “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.”

Nestled in the middle of a field lies a house; my house. Despite it being over three thousand miles away across the Atlantic Ocean, I feel at home there. A mixture of warmth and euphoria fills my chest as the taxi rolls down the driveway, its tires crunching on the rocks, as our front door enters my ray of vision. Family Family is one of the greatest gift and blessing from the Lord. Without family you can not feel love, care , satisfaction and happiness. They are the most treasured blessing that no one can take away from us. It is also like a fragile thing you consider as the most precious gem in your whole life. Family is a basic unit in the society traditionally consisting of parents and children.
