The image on page 39 is the picture I am choosing to journal over. The wolf has triangle red eyes, sharp triangle teeth, a slithering red tongue. The image shows the wolf creeping around a tree and spying on Little Red Triangle; the background is a light purple. I chose this picture because I believe it shows the reason that Molly Bang was trying to make throughout the book. On the page before this it shows the same image, however, the background is white. At first, I thought nothing of this, and then after turning the page I realized the difference the color really can make. Molly Bang states, “Because in this picture the purple implies nighttime, or the approach of night, and night feels scarier to us than day because we see well during the day and poorly at night.” This made a lot of sense to me. At first I thought the white depicted the picture well and then seeing the purple I truly saw the difference it could make. While the white backgrounded picture is still intimidating the purple background is even more so. Bang talks about how we related purple to Little Red’s mom early on, therefore, shouldn’t this be a happy thing? Yet, it is not because we think of these kinds of colors to be associated with darkness, making it the scarier of the two. …show more content…

Without any explanation of either photo, I would put up both pictures on the board and ask the students to tell me which image seemed more intimidating to them. After they all put in a vote I would use Bang’s reasoning of both the white and the purple background to explain why the purple should seem scarier. As listed above the purple would imply nightmares and a scarier time of day, while the white is associated with day and the sun. I believe this shows how changing certain things no matter how small can affect the meaning of
