There she excelled, but she wanted a greater opportunity for a better education, so she applied to Central High School because of the decision of the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education. Without her family knowing that she applied, she was chosen to be one of the nine Black students who would attend and integrate Little Rock Central High School. On their first day at Central High School, Beals and the other eight Black students were waited on by crowds of white people who wanted to keep them out of the school. They were greeted with violent acts and hateful language. Governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, had sent soldiers from the National Guard to disrupt the integration, temporarily prevented the students from entering the school, and did not protect them.

Board of Education signified the first time that the Supreme Court was on the African American side. This court case was a direct challenge to Plessy v. Ferguson, which stated that separate but equal facilities were equal. The book Warriors Don’t Cry is set directly during this period. In 1957, Governor Orval Faubus blocked the integration of nine students from Little Rocks Central High. President Eisenhower eventually became involved for a few reasons; one was because Governor Faubus was making an obvious resistance to federal authority.

Several days later the Little Rock nine “returned back to the school, and entered through the side door so they can avoid the crowd of rowdy students and the press.” That same day they were found by more students whom “violently attacked them and innocent bystanders.” In 1958 the first African American, Ernest Green, graduated Little Rock Central High School, and the governor got “reelected and shut down all schools” in Little Rock, Arkansas because he did not want to integrate the schools of Little Rock, Arkansas. The legacy of The Little Rock Nine has set the bar for African American students who has to fight for equality at predominantly whites schools today.

The story of the Little Rock Nine takes place in the Spring of 1957, and there were 517 African American students who lived in the Central High School District located in Little Rock, Arkansas. Although, eighty students took an interest in accompanying Central during the fall semester. These African American students had the opportunity to be interviewed by the Little Rock School Board. Out of the results of the interview, seventeen of the eighty African American students were eligible to attend Central High School. As the Central High School fall semester began, only nine of the seventeen students decided to attend Central High School.

The message was clear: African Americans were not wanted (“Integration of Central High School”). Roberts writes, “‘It took an incredible amount of bravery from those nine students to face what was real terrorism and mob violence,” says Alvin Tillery, a professor of political science and African-American studies at Northwestern University in Illinois. “Elizabeth Eckford being threatened, harassed, and spat on, and her calm resistance became an iconic symbol of the civil rights movement.’” Lots of rioting broke out when the governor announced that central high school would be integrated. More than 1,000 white people against the Little Rock nine gathered to protest.

Their presence was a test of Brown v. Board of Education, a landmark ruling that allowed desegregated public schools. The law was a major movement in creating fairness and equality amongst society members. The Little Rock Nine successfully

The Little Rock Nine were to be the first African American students to enter Little Rock’s Central high school. In 1957, nine ordinary teenagers walked out of their home and stepped up to the front lines in the battle for civil rights for all Americans. I chose this topic because racism and segregation are something very important to me. Everyone no matter what color or nationality you are, should be treated with respect and should never be seen as unequal or unimportant. Everyone deserves kindness and should never have to tolerate disrespect in the first place.

The MLK unit showed me a lot about my interests and non interests. Although, the Emmett Till situation is what grabbed my attention. It was typical during the 1950 's for blacks to be killed, but what stood out the most is when his mother requested to have an open casket at his funeral. She wanted everyone to see what they had done to her 14-year old boy. Emmett 's case became representative of the disparity of justice for blacks in the South.

When nine young African American students volunteered to enroll they were met by the Arkansas national guard soldiers who blocked their way. Along with the national guard these nine students were surrounded by an angry white mob who were screaming harsh comments about this situation. On this day not one of nine African American students gained entrance to the school that day. Along with came a later situation where a Air Force veteran named James Meredith sought to enroll in the all-white University of Mississippi known as “Ole Miss” where he was promptly sent away. However in the September of 1962 with the help of the NAACP Meredith won a federal court case that ordered the university to desegregate.

Nine years after the United States Supreme Court ruled separate is not equal many schools were still segregated. Judge Bohanon wanted to end this, so he forced a stop to segregation in Oklahoma City Public Schools through his ruling (1). This shows how government leader like Judge Bohanon would try to stop segregation. With them using the power they had they would start with one small area such as schools and it would get the ball rolling to be able to expand the stop of segregation in other areas. Colleges could no be segregated as of June 6, 1955 because of the ruling by Oklahoma’s Board of Higher Education (8).

In 1957, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas’s decision, segregation in public education violated the Fourteen Amendment, but Central High School refused to desegregate their school. Even though various school districts agreed to the court ruling, Little Rock disregarded the board and did not agree to desegregate their schools, but the board came up with a plan called the “Blossom plan” to form integration of Little Rock High despite disputation from Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus. Desegregating Central high encountered a new era of achievement of black folks into the possibility of integrating public schools, and harsh resistance of racial integration. The Little Rock Nine changed civil rights by their own volition and today by staying brave in violent and interrogating scenarios which helped set a model for equal educational opportunities.

Little Rock Nine “They found themselves in the middle of a tug a war between federal and state power”(Kirk). The students hunger for equality sparked a change that would affect America greatly. Little Rock Nine inspired many African Americans to stand up for themselves and stand against racism. They also helped desegregate schools which later lead to the desegregation of other public areas. Little Rock Nine was an inspiration to the 1960’s as seen through their background, impact, and contributions.

During the integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957, the media illuminated certain events and painted an inaccurate or incomplete picture of other events. The media illuminates many important events that show how racist white people are treating black people and showing people in the North who are against segregation and support integration.
