World War I. America needed an advantage to beat Germany and their allies. So a true patriot created one of the first assault weapon and named it the Thompson submachine gun. The weapon would of made a big difference on the war ,but it was created when the war was over. So gangsters acquired the weapons and killed many lives. New assault weapons came and ended more lives. Gangsters might be gone ,but criminals are still around and they use assault weapons for their preference of mass murdering. Assault weapons should be banned. Assault weapons are far more dangerous than other guns. They shoot nearly a thousand bullets in a few seconds. This makes them more deadly than several handguns or other firearms that are not automatic. In addition, assault weapons have features that make killing easier. Most “Supporters say assault weapons have special military features that makes mass shooting easier”(“Assault weapons”). Another reason assault weapons are more dangerous than other guns is because they’re harder to stop. In 1994 the government placed a ban on 19 firearms that were categorized as assault weapons. This banned had the intention to reduce shootings and it did. Many people agreed to these this ban. Statistics show that “77% of the American people and 66% gun owners want to put a ban on Assault weapons (Alters). So the ban didn’t really argue on some people’s views. Even Senator of California Dianne Feinstein, one of the many senators who wanted a ban on assault weapons said that “The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was effective at reducing crime and getting these military-style weapons off our streets,” (Assault Weapons).
