Artificial intelligence has become a controversy among scientists within the past few years. Would artificial intelligence improve our communities in ways we humans cannot, or would they simply cause harm? What are the possible advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence, and to what extent is it ethically defensible to develop this technology?
Researchers, leading roles in the technological field, and AI developers have divided opinions regarding the future of artificial intelligence. Those who oppose Strong AI are high profile individuals, although in other areas of the technology industry and not in AI development. Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla Motors, questions Strong AI by arguing that too advanced artificial intelligence could pose a threat to the human race. Musk is not alone in his scepticism towards the future of AI. James Barrat, an author on the subject, expresses his concerns about the notion of Strong AI. He suggests the risks of a volitional and sentient machine could arise when a machine starts developing drives and urges similar to those we humans possess. Consequently, this would lead to the machines trying to avoid failure modes such as off switches to achieve their desires. This thesis amongst other factors is what Barrat is hesitant towards. Furthermore, Barrat probably stirred some opposition against the advocates stating his hypotheses about Strong AI and the possible outcome, enmity towards humans. However, advocates argue that claims concerning a malevolent future in AI are preposterous owing to the fact that they are hypotheses and should not be taken as factual. I partially disagree with the last statement because although I do recognize that we are becoming more dependent on what our computers can do, there are some aspects in which a computer can totally fail but a human wont. A Computer can provide you with outstanding amounts of information that anyone may require to complete a task, but no one should expect the computer to do all the job, it is only a tool that provides us with some of the means to achieve a goal, the rest will depend on human help. Thompson illustrated what kind of world we would live in if work were to diminish. This world included excessive amounts of dominating robots, contentious politics, and leisure time. For the past couple of years people have said that robots will take over and dominate humans. This has always been a myth, or rather a topic that is brushed off of the shoulders. In the book, The Glass Cage: How Our Computers Are Changing Us, by Nicholas Carr is about the existence of automation and technology that are changing and affecting the lives of humans. In the debate of automation in the book, Carr defines automation as “the use of computers and software to do things we used to ourselves” (1). With the definition of automation in mind, there are positive and negative connotations about automation that Carr argue and inserts himself in his book. In chapter 1, “Passengers”, Carr introduces two distinct types of knowledge, tacit and explicit knowledge.
Douglas employs notable examples to support his claims and rightfully proves why AI is not as risky as seen by the public. David Parnas’ “The Real Risks of Artificial Intelligence” focuses on the unseen negative aspects of Artificial Intelligence. He argues that AI programs can be untrustworthy and even in some cases, destructive due to the programming approach that programmers take. While Parnas is negative about the concept of Artificial Intelligence, Eldridge see Artificial Intelligence in a brighter light. Both authors present their arguments differently in terms of tone, level of diction, examples and organization.

In Alan Turing’s paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, he proposes a thought experiment that would eventually be tested, and even later be beaten. He describes an experiment where a man and a woman are in two different rooms and an outside observer has to guess at the sexes of the participants. He then suggests that one of the participants be replaced with a computer. Once humanity is unable to tell the difference and will guess that the computer is human at the same rate that it will guess that it is a machine will answer Turing’s thesis of, “Can machines think?’ (434).
As time passes, we will continue to be introduced to new creations which will be far more superior than what we have at the moment. In the meantime, we will have machines and robots who are not ‘perfect’ yet. Since Artificial Intelligence is a system that is programed by human beings. Therefore, what this means is that it would be easier for opponents to crack the system.
Many jobs have become easier by being replaced by robots. Robot are not just the idea of talking mechanical parts as we see in futuristic movies. There are a variety of different types of robotic machines, great majority of them appear in factories and in science technology work fields. Robots in factories help replace a dangerous parts of a job. However, there have been different perspective with robots replacing jobs.
Future… it always seems so far away from me. As a younger generation of this complex world, I used to not think that I am part of this community to make the world a better place to live in. However, as I grow to become more matured, I will ask myself sometimes, what can we as the younger generation do to contribute to this community. Can we really go beyond the standards set for us by the pioneers?
Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: Literature Review The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, authored by Nick Bostrom and Eliezer Yudkowsky, as a draft for the Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence, introduces five (5) topics of discussion in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ethics, including, short term AI ethical issues, AI safety challenges, moral status of AI, how to conduct ethical assessment of AI, and super-intelligent Artificial Intelligence issues or, what happens when AI becomes much more intelligent than humans, but without ethical constraints? This topic of ethics and morality within AI is of particular interest for me as I will be working with machine learning, mathematical modeling, and computer simulations for my upcoming summer internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Norco, California. After I complete my Master Degree in 2020 at Northeastern University, I will become a full time research engineer working at this navy laboratory. At the suggestion of my NSWC mentor, I have opted to concentrate my master’s degree in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Algorithm Development, technologies which are all strongly associated with AI. Nick Bostrom, one of the authors on this article, is Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University and the Director at the Future of Humanity Institute within the Oxford Martin School.
I do not believe the field has been developed to its potential in any regard, and feel that considerable progress can be made to improve the interactive experience that users have with an artificial intelligence application. This genuine intrigue combined with my curiosity for the subject matter and the limitless potential of the field are the reason why I wish to pursue a greater depth of knowledge in artificial
