In class we have been reading the book Bad Boy by Walter Dean Myers. Were midway through the book up to now, it’s a remarkable book. It’s well written and uses vivid details that shows the reader what’s proceeding in the story, it doesn’t just tell the reader what’s proceeding in the story. It takes place in the 40’s and 50’s and is about an African American boy named Walter, and his life in the city of Harlem, N.Y. The book shows his toil of being intelligent, but no kids amidst him can associate with his fondness for leaning. Walter also is a firebrand and Bad Boy shows what kind of nuisance he gets into with society amidst him. While he is tussling with all of this he is beginning to realize the racial discrimination in society amidst him, which has an immense force on Walter. In the book Bad Boy I enjoy a few ideas about the book and loathe only one trivial issue. …show more content…
I enjoy the interesting details about how life was like back then, and how there was the battle of race back then for the African Americans. I love how the author describes society back then with such vivid detail that makes you experience what it was like to live back then. Like in the book the author described all the structures on Harlem’s main street with such vivid detail and with all the people on that street, it made you feel like you were ambling right by the main character’s side. I find that really interesting and appealing about the book. I also find it really intriguing about the racial battle the African Americans had in their society back then. I enjoy learning about how the coped with it and how they discovered ways to get through the battle of that. Like in the story Walter got his occupation of packing seized from him and given to a white person instead. Those are ideas I enjoyed about the book Bad Boy up to
Chapter 2 is called Harlem. Walter moved to Harlem, New York when he was little. Walter loved the music that played along the streets. Walter loved talking to his mama.
He starts to see the hypocrisy of the patriots fighting for freedom, the racial bias others are more than willing to impose on his race, and runs away from it all to no longer be constrained into slavery. His character changes from the naive little boy learning other languages to a young adult realizing how inhumane slavery is regardless of their situation. The story does have its strengths and weaknesses which can take away from the entire novel or give an interest to
Books express who the author is or who they want to be. They show the imagination and, sometimes, the difficulties of the author’s life. In Bad Boy, by Walter Dean Myers, the author shows the difficulties in his life and how he overcame those obstacles in the shape of a memoire. While I appreciate the truths about the world told in Bad Boy, and the uncensored quality while addressing racial issues, I am not too fond of this book. I definitely do not hate Bad
“I think we all have blocks between us and the best version of ourselves, whether it's shyness, insecurity, anxiety, whether it's a physical block, and the story of a person overcoming that block to their best self. It's truly inspiring because I think all of us are engaged in that every day.” The memoir Bad Boy, by Walter Dean Myers, takes place in Harlem, New York. It is about Walter Dean Myers when he is a child and teenager. It tells ways of how he overcomes his struggles as an African American with speech problems and financial issues.
What would you do if your little sister suddenly became possessed? I finished the book Bad Girls Don’t Die by Katie Alender. The main character, Alexis (or Lexi), has recently seen changes in her little sister, Kasey. She has become weirdly obsessed with creepy dolls, she’s been talking in an old-fashioned language, and her eyes change from blue to green. When Lexi’s father gets in a car accident, Lexi has no doubt that Kasey’s other personality had something to do with it.
The book I read this month was titled Voices from the Civil War by Milton Meltzer. When the United States defeated Mexico we gained California, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Colorado(Pg.1). In 1850 the Fugitive Slave Law came to power. It stated that all slave found in the North where to be returned to there owner.
One of the memories he won’t forget is the time when went to Macy’s with his mom. Also the bright colors people whore to work. Later on that day blacks started protesting against whites because they couldn’t work where black people worked. Also blacks were entertainers, churchgoers, or athletes, but Walter was an athletic. During summer break Walter had to kinds of friends.
I find it interesting the way the society in Black No More shifts throughout the story to continually uphold racist beliefs. The world in the book changes massively from beginning to end. It will never be the same again. As Crookman’s treatment changes more and more people, those in power struggle to stay at the top.
I personally like the way the females are in my family. It has taught me to be independent and showed me that if I want something, I have to get it myself. Besides that aspect, I do agree with how the Latino culture that was presented in the book. After reading this book, I feel like I have not been as diverse as I have wanted.
In chapter 8 of Bad Boy, As Walter Dean Myers grew up in Harlem New York as he grew up Walter was age 13 when he wanted to see his own world around him and thought a real writer had seen full magic. When Myers traveled to the other parts of New York City. Myers wanted to look at the word with Shelley and Lord Byron to feel the inspiration that guided their pens. Soon when Walter traveled to the other parts of New York, but Walter world is Harlem New York. One morning at the beginning at 125th street and by the Hudson River.
The author handles suspense well, making the reader anticipate what will happen next. She spends a couple of chapters writing about the dilemma at the courthouse involving the colored men from The Bottom and The White League gradually leads up to the horrific Colfax massacre. The massacre is described in great detail. The reader is transported into the civil war era and can practically hear the gunshots being fired, can see the men being killed in cold blood leaving their lifeless bodies on the ground in the aftermath. When Israel Smith cheats death again after being brutally beaten and shot in the eye the reader doesn 't know if he will live or die.
How Justyce went through all of these horrible things, and still managed to be a good person in the end. Throughout this book Justyce went through lots of changes in how he thinks and feels, and what he notices about different situations. I noticed that when he made a mistake or something bad had just happened in the book, you never really realize how they are thinking, but in this book you knew everything that he was thinking, which I thought really helped convey the meaning of this book. How people that are the same as us just with different coloured skin went through all of these horrible things, that white coloured people thought that was right at the time. How this time damaged so many families and friendships because of the difference of
In chapter 5 of Bad Boy, Walter talks about baseball, meeting his dad and his brothers. In the summer of 1947 Walter was excited that they let Jackie Robinson and Larry Dobby into Major League Baseball. Walter would gather all of his neighborhood friends to watch baseball with him. Soon Walter’s biological father moved to Harlem, because his wife had family there. Walter never considered his biological father his dad because he never acted like it.

In the times of World War II, thousands of Japanese American citizens were taken from their homes, and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (285) by Jamie Ford follows the heart-breaking journey through a young Chinese boy’s experiences in this touching historical fiction. While the book mainly focuses on the boy, Henry’s, childhood events, it also allows readers to meet him again 40 years in the future. During his younger years, Henry and his newfound friend, Keiko, face many challenges, most of which caused by the war and racial tensions around them.
