Tatum uses the conflict theory to look at racism, economic and social inequalities. The power structure of the white dominant society in the United States, does not often recognize white privilege, while others do not believe this is a privilege at all. They believe that the power structure in the United States is one that if you work hard, everyone will have the same opportunity for success. This is an example of how white privilege helps racism to continue to exist. The inability to recognize white privilege helps to creates perception and ideals that racism in our society is a thing of the past.

Symbolic Interactionalism is the study of things to which we attach meaning are the key to understanding how we view the world and communicate with one another. Princess and The Frog is a great movie, it uses symbolic interactionalism to show what a great symbol Tiana’s dad was in her life. Positive sanctions, core values, ethnocentrism, differential association, and The movie Princess and the Frog is about a very hard working girl named Tiana. Tiana has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant on day.

Throughout our history our society struggles with inequality. Sexism and racism still addresses like class, gender or other dominating classifications a structural problem in our United States culture. In Jean Baker Miller’s essay “Domination and Subordination” she discusses the temporary and permanent inequality. Miller states that the temporary inequality is a relationship between a dominated individual who explains and is a teacher to the subordinated individual. In contrast her explanation of the permanent inequality is the relationship of different individuals who always will be unequal.

Functionalism and The Bee Movie Amari Wilburn-Jones Introduction to Sociology February 16,2018 In the field of Sociology sociologist often view society from three major theoretical perspectives: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. Each theories/perspective is a way to view how parts of the world fit together and work. In this paper I will be analyzing The Bee Movie from the functional analysis perspective to see how the actions of people within a society can help or hinder the society as a whole.

The example from the movie would be the courtroom if anything. The court in the town, which they never had until people started changing colors, is basically one big interrelated system. The final theoretical perspective from the movie would be the biggest one, which is Conflict Theory. According to the textbook, Conflict Theory is theoretical framework that sees society as divided by inequality and conflict. There are plenty of examples of this from the movie.

Conflict Theory American society today is made up of all three of the theories. In my opinion, these theories all thrive off each other as a whole. I feel that the chain is something like this, Symbolic Interactionism, as well as Functionalism, lead into Conflict Theory. However, I feel that Conflict Theory is by far the largest component American society is made from, here is why! First I would like to touch on Symbolic Interactionism, symbols we attach value or meaning.

Solommon Yohannes October 5th, 2017 Sociology& 101 Mr. Woo Racial Inequality Viewed Through the Conflict Perspective Lens The racial inequality that we have in modern day blossomed from the historic oppression and comprehensive prejudice of minority groups. From the very beginning of “American” history, other groups of people who were not of European decent were discriminated against and treated inhumanely and without the smallest regard for their lives. Native American populations were decimated by diseases brought oversea by Europeans and forced from their ancestral lands by settlers to make room for their expanding populations.

David Montero explains that in Sialkot, Pakistan there is a business, Saga Sports, that creates the Nike soccer balls by hand, the problem Nike has with the company is that they employ children to work in unjust conditions. “In November, Nike severed its contract with Saga Sports, its chief supplier, saying Saga's poor management exposes Nike to the threat of child labor and other labor violations,” (Montero). The chief executive of Nike is trying to reduce the amount of children that produce their goods in unfair conditions. The executive wants consumers to know that they are buying products that were manufactured the proper way of not having children make these items in appalling conditions that could threaten their health. The evidence suggest that working conditions is another reason that the United States consumers should not buy products that are made by

The producers of these commercials know this does not draw in a crowd and know that they need to use fast, up beat, inspiring music to draw peoples’ attention. The players, athletes, and people involved in the video clip are all showering in Nike attire with bright colors and designs and the big symbol they are known for is visible for everyone to see. In some of the propaganda, a player may be shown as mediocre with very little Nike attire, but as the publication goes on, the athlete is wearing all Nike and becomes an excellent competitor. This shows the audience that if they wear their products they will become better and well rounded. Another example Nike uses pathos is by using an athlete that once had multiple failures and has turned their failures into success.

People are going to desire that same shoe or product. Nike creates a idea in the audiences mind to go get the shoe that the celebrity is wearing. Nike draws consumer in with role models. Nike ethos is very effective towards the

Inequality of conditions means the unequal distribution of income such as job income, wealth, and resources, etc. Inequality of opportunities means the unequal distribution of life chances such as education, find the better job, etc. (Ashley Crossman, 2017). There are some social inequalities revealed in the movie “Good Will Hunting” such as inequality in education, inequality of opportunities unequal distribution of resource, wealth and power which lead to poverty and social stratification. I will analyze these aspects by using functionalist perspective and conflict perspective in this paper and identify similar situations in Hong Kong.

In the movie, Stand By Me, by Stephen King, four boys, Gordie, Teddy, Vern and Chris, set out in search of the body of a young boy who had been missing. They had overheard where the body might have been located and went to see if they could find it. The boys endured several different obstacles whether it was a train, sleeping in dark wilderness filled with vicious animals, or older boys who were also intent on finding the body, but they continued on until they found the body. Throughout the movie there were several sociological concepts such as, growing up/coming of age, the idea the people will go to great length to achieve fame, and the idea that people perceive people that may be different then how they actually are. The movie uses all three of the sociological perspectives, but the one that stood out to me most what the symbolic interactionist perspective.

Symbolic Interactionism and Racism One of the biggest social problems that exists in the world today is racism. One way that racism can be explained is through the symbolic interactionism perspective. Symbolic interactionism is the study of how people base their meaning of social life through interacting with other people such as family, friends, or even strangers. Society and agency play roles in symbolic interactionism. Society is the network of interactions between people and agency is our ability to respond and think independently from restrictions that were placed upon us by society.

Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.

The Mini Case manifests that Nike’s core competency is to create heroes. Nike spends over $1 billion per year sponsoring athletes, and transfer its brand image via celebrity effect. Nike sponsoring athletes who with huge potential, or even from disadvantaged backgrounds (Rothaemel, 2015). Those people’s success stand for “impossible to possible”, Nike impressing its customers that everyone can become a hero by these inspiring stories. From 1976 to 1983, Nike focused on product innovation, and launched the Air shoe which significantly contributed to a reversal in declining sales.
