The Benefits of In-Class Smartphone Use
Introduction
IT technologies today improve continuously and with great speed. In a blink of the eye, as it seems, smartphones, tablets and computers become smarter and more sophisticated. Simultaneously, these technologies become cheaper and, therefore, more affordable to people, which also means that smartphones have now become a must have for everyone.
School and college students are not an exclusion. Various sources report that up to 99% of students have a smartphone, and nearly all of them bring their devices with them to class. This raised a concern among educators and the public altogether, as accessing social media, playing games and texting has never been easier, no

Many professional educators believe that using these devices in class purposefully can not only make students more attentive, but will also improve students’ knowledge acquisition. An article featured in the journal Interventions That Work, for example, points out that “with a willingness to experiment, teachers might be able to create classrooms where the cell phones currently tucked into students' backpacks function as important tools instead of incessant distractions” (Ferriner). This last perspective on the issue under study seems to become more and more …show more content…
Of course, students will use free internet to surf social networks and YouTube if they are allowed to do so because that is what they do at home. It is the teachers’ responsibility to show a different application of the Internet and their devices apart from entertainment. Daniel O’Sullivan from the Guardian puts this idea rather well in his editorial dedicated to the topic under study. He writes, “Outlawing mobile phones is a shortsighted measure that doesn’t account for all the innovative things that teachers can, and regularly do, devise to give children the skills they need to thrive in the modern world” (O’Sullivan). Educators should teach students to use their devices as powerful educational tools, and not only for fun. An author of the National Education Association affirms that “with their easy internet access, a multitude of education-friendly apps, and the ability to be used at a moment’s notice smartphones have all the tools necessary to boost student learning”
Rubinkam’s Texting in Class is Rampant explains how most highschool and college students use their phones during class and lectures. Rubinkam reports that , “The anonymous survey of 269 Wilkes students found that nine in 10 admit to sending text messages during class-and nearly half say it's easy to do so undetected. Even more troubling, 10 percent say that they have sent or received texts during exams and 3 percent admit to using their phones to cheat.” Rubinkam uses logos to show how many students use their phones during class. The amount of students that do is frightening to most teachers because most teachers do not even notice it.
Of course, the teacher does not have total control over each student, there are means by which an instructor can yield the results she/he is looking for. Although our authors both bring up strong points about the use of cell phones in classrooms, they sometimes overstated the degree to which they are disruptive. The authors also give a good idea as to how the reduction of cell phone use would help classrooms become better learning environments with more respect for instructors and peers and how one’s grades have the possibility of improving once their cell phones have been put away. If purely stating these ideas to students would not help the students use their phones less, then incentives or penalizations can be offered by the instructor to make such a problem
Most kids want to transport their phones to school. A common thing kids say is “ The teacher allows it though. ’’ Students and some teachers don’t know that cell phones in the classroom is unsatisfactory. Reasons for this are, it is a distraction, can be disguised as a gun, and can be used for cheating.
Ben Johnson is an educator who mostly writes for students’ learning strategy and the use of technology tools. Also, he is the administration for Edutopia. Edutopia is a nonprofit organization website started in 1991 by the George Lucas Educational Foundation. This source provides the actuality of cell phones in the classroom and the way to regulate it so that students won’t be distracted. It is the significant example of the rebuttal for my counterclaim, which proves that the distraction won’t be a problem after the regulation.
Computers & Education, 68, 76-85. This article seeks to explain mobile technology as expanding learning by using a term referred to as “here and now.” This form of learning allows students to have access to information anytime and anywhere; performing tasks on mobile devices that are geared toward academic learning.
Could Phones in Class Be the Key to Learning Seeing a kid in class with their phone out, your first instinct will be telling them to put it away. Although cell phones can be a distraction and used for entertainment purposes they could be used for so much more. Phones should be allowed in classrooms to use as a learning tool, it will help students organize their work, and is cheaper than buying more technology. As you may know, schools are strict on their no phones in class rule.
Kennedy Hamlin Mrs. Gallos English 3 Honors 29 March 2018 A Twenty-First Century Problem: Cell Phone Usage in the Classroom Even though banning cell phones reduce distractions in the classroom, phones should be allowed in the classroom, but restricted to school work because it offers more learning opportunities and gets kids excited about learning. There are numerous benefits and downsides to allowing technology in the classroom. Having cell phones and other electronic devices in the classroom can be integrated into the curriculum. However, these resources might also be harming the children who use them repeatedly over time.
Cell Phones In Schools Despite the fact that cell phones may be used for educational purposes, phones should still be banned from schools due to texting and posting, cyberbullying, and a use for non - educational purposes. As a student, I am faced with the problem, “No Cell Phones in Classrooms”. Many students like to bring their cellphones in class. The one problem however is, “What are you doing with your phone?”
Developments such as the use of personal devices in the classroom (BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device) are increasing in popularity. As stated in the Horizon Report, “the integration of personal smartphones, tablets, and PCs into the workflow supports an on-the-go mentality, changing the nature of work and learning activities” (36). Today’s teachers use these devices for interactive demonstrations, virtual tours, presentations, networking, note taking, and more. Mobile Future’s research shows that in the United States “43% of Pre-K through 12th-grade students use a smartphone” (36). With such widespread use, students already comfortable with these devices are able to competently use them in the classroom environment for more personalized student-centered

Cell phones can use for many purposes like educational things like projects, calculators, research, and even putting important notes or reminders when a homework or taking notes is due in that day. Both students and teachers can now find facts within seconds. This can be very useful when explaining and debating topics.” As we all know, kids in this day in age have so much power in the palm of their hands they can get any piece of information they need in seconds and they should be able to use that power. Another reason kids should be able to use their smartphones in class is that teachers now are able to create assignments which kids can complete on their phones.
While the teacher is explaining the lecture to give, students will not focus in class if they have a cell phone in hand and using it during the session. This will reflect negatively on their studies and make the children not understand anything that is given in class (Ayas & Tarman,
