Bermuda Disappearance

The colonists of Roanoke went to Croatoan. When John White came back to Roanoke after three years of waiting in England, he found the island deserted. He found carved on a tree Croatoan. The colonists had told White if they moved they would carve it on a tree. He knew that the people of Roanoke went there.

In this set of materials, the author and the professor discuss the theory of the missing colonists of the Roanoke Island . The author states that the colonists moved to another island called Croatan, whereas the professor claims that this theory is not the most credible one. First, the author alleges that the missing colonists traveled to a neighboring island of Croatan. However, the professor argues that there is only one route to arrive to that place, and as there is no evidence that the colonists used that way, it is possible they decided to go to other location.

The lost colony of Roanoke It all started on August 9th 1590 when the English started to explore the island of Roanoke. Not sure what they were going to find or even have a clue of what they were going to find however they started there journey anyways. The natives were extremely friendly the English men.

In 1587 he sailed back to the island with 100 colonists and became the governor of the second colony that Walter Raleigh was attempting to establish. White and his group returned to what remained from their last expedition and worked to rebuild what had previously been constructed and also try to rebuild the broken relationship that had been between the Indians and the last settlers, the latter of which was not as successful as they had hoped. Because of the time of year White and the colonists had arrived at Roanoke, it was too late for them to produce crops before winter, they were running out of supplies and were receiving no aid from the Indians. The colonists asked White to return to England and bring back more supplies, but by the time White was able to return, he returned to what is known as the “lost colony”. Carved into a nearby tree of the Roanoke colony, the words “Croatoan” and “Cro” were the last shrew of evidence remaining of the Roanoke colony. The word “Croatoan” remains a mystery amongst scientists and archeologists today. The lost colony of Roanoke has developed many ideas and questions of the settlers’ location. Theories have developed over time but little facts are known about the disappearance of Roanoke’s settlers.

By measuring the width of the rings from the trunks of the trees, the researchers learned that the rings appeared smaller than average during the years 1587-1589. This shows that during the years the settlement took place, Roanoke Island was suffering a horrible drought. This experiment may not give ideas on where they went, but it does inform people that they were suffering from their resources as stated before. Once the settlers realized it was taking White longer than expected to come back with supplies, they could have left to find an area with more pleasing

The most popular theory being that the colonists of Roanoke left. After leaving Roanoke the colonists settled to Chesapeake Bay arriving in boats made of parts from their homes. This theory seems the most likely for the colonists would have to begin to make a new life for themselves during the three-year absence of their governor. Approximately 20 years after the colonists disappeared the infamous colony of Jamestown was established by John Smith near Chesapeake Bay where the colonists supposedly settled (Shadowlands). Another theory that ties into the Chesapeake Bay theory is that the colony of Roanoke is the Cedar Island that we know of today.

History extra credit​ The disappearance of the Lost Roanoke colony. Roanoke is an island in North America that is located just off the coast of what is now North Carolina. During the early 15,000’s a wealthy English man, Sir Walter Raleigh requested that the Queen granted him permission to gather a crew and head on an expedition to discover new lands in Northern America.

The Colonists at Roanoke The mystery of Roanoke Island has baffled historians for over 400 years. One hundred twenty English Colonists disappeared with only one clue as to where they went; a single word: “Croatoan” carved into a post where they had previously been settled. In Cat Allard’s analyzation of the Roanoke mystery, he goes over several different, yet similar, theories of what might’ve happened to the Colonists. Allard focuses on two main arguments: The Colonists were massacred by natives, or they relocated and assimilated with a different tribe.

The English colonists on Roanoke Island lived in homes near native villages, but after vanishing without a trace, they are now called the Lost Colony. When John White finally returned to Roanoke Island in 1590, the English colony had vanished, and he allegedly found the words 'CRO ' and 'CROATOAN ' carved on two trees. When White saw that, he thought that the colonists got help from the Croatan Indians on Hatteras Island. The Croatans were peaceful and friendly with the settlers, so the English could have a good relationship with them when the colony was established in 1587. There are many theories about what happened to them: one of them is that they managed to integrate themselves with the Croatan people.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island: Gone Without a Trace Have you ever heard of the mystery of the Roanoke Colony? This strange historical event began in 1584, during one of the first English expeditions to the New World to establish settlements. The settlers landed on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. After only one year, the colony was abandoned due to harsh weather, lack of supplies, and conflicts with the indigenous people in the area.

One of the reasons archaeologists assume the settlers went to croatoan is because they relied on them for food since they didn’t know how to farm the land (Heckscher). In addition, after stumbling upon a unique find dated to the 16th century, archaeologist Mark Horton explains that the evidence is the colonists “assimilated with the native americans but kept their goods.” Horton says this because the unique find was a piece of slate believed to be of european origin considering the natives didn’t have that sort of technology (Pruitt). The slate was found further inland in around the same area as a native tribe suggesting that europeans had lives there. Before sailing back to england, white left specific instructions on what to do if the settlers had decided to move the colony or if they were in danger.

The Bermuda Triangle only existed out of the writer's imagination. The Bermuda Triangle is an area within the points of Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda, this region is also known as the devil's triangle. It caught attention when they Cyclops ( a U.S. ship named after a giants in the greek mythology explaining how large the boat was) have sunken in that within that region. Another weird famous incident was flight 19 (a torpedo bombers group wave was sent for practicing and disappeared over the region without sending an SOS signal.), the pilots were very well trained to avoid incidents and crashes however the us navy never received any sort of information to know what happened. Till this day, no one knows what happened in this area, and many theories try to prove what happened in there; but is there such a thing as the Bermuda Triangle or is it just a legend.
