Roanoke Colony Research Paper

The New York colony soil was fertile and great for farming which was the reason the British wanted to remove it from the hands of the Dutch. New York was named after James the Duke of York. The Dutch were the first to settle in New York but then was preccoupied by the English in 1674. When the Dutch occupied New York they called it New Amsterdam.

As a result of the lack of food and water, the surviving colonists moved to different locations in an attempt to find the necessary resources in order to survive. If they were to have stayed and waited for John White to come back, they would have died of hunger or disease. Right before they departed, they used the last of the medicine and forgot to dispose of the shards, which were the remnants left at their settlement. When the colonists left, some of the them were still ill and needed more medicine, which also led them to leave their settlement and journey with the Croatans in search for more resources. The natives were thought to be “animal-like” and down to earth people and knew of herbs and plants that could heal the colonists.

The colonists of Roanoke went to Croatoan. When John White came back to Roanoke after three years of waiting in England, he found the island deserted. He found carved on a tree Croatoan. The colonists had told White if they moved they would carve it on a tree. He knew that the people of Roanoke went there.

The reading passage states that the group of English settlers which, as it was thought before, was sent to Roanoke and did not disappear. It explains that the group relocated to the Island of Croatoa and provides three reasons to support its statement. However, the professor supposes that this theory is still not proved and finds the author’s arguments weak and easily dismisses them. First of all, the article argues that the Governor of the settlement found the word “Croatoa” that was carved onto a piece of wood.

Maryland In 1632, a piece of paper was given to an Englishman named Cecil Calvert. This paper was a charter from King Charles I, and it permitted Calvert to establish a colony in the New World. (“Maryland Colony”) The colony he established was Maryland.

Well first the reading passage expreses that all the people of Roanoke Island have moved to another Island called Croatan, because of the carvings lefted on the trees that said "Cro" and "Croatan", however that was not the only theory, some other theories explained for example, another theory is that they had moved to a English Island because they had good relationships with the Enlgish settled there, and because on that group later where people who was talking English lenguage, another theory was that they managed to integrate themselves with Crotan people, another theory was they where aniquilated by the Spains or antoher people, but the reading pasaage only describes that they have moved the Croatan Island tired of been waiting for Governor

The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the biggest mysteries in American history to date. I do not believe the citizens of the colony were forced to leave. Before he left, John White, the former governor of the Roanoke Colony, had instructed the colonists to carve a Maltese Cross into a nearby tree if they were forced to leave. When he returned, there was no sight of a cross, just the words ‘CRO’ carved into a nearby tree as well as “CROATOAN” carved into the gatepost of one of the forts. This lead White and his team to believe that they had moved to Croatoan Island, present day Hatteras Island, with no sign of force.

After researching the documents I have compiled several pieces of evidence. I read data set 3 and found interesting evidence, it says “English settlers first came to Roanoke Island in 1585. Their colony failed, however. They fought with American Indians and they didn’t bring enough supplies.” This supports my theory that the colonists ran out of supplies.

The English colonists on Roanoke Island lived in homes near native villages, but after vanishing without a trace, they are now called the Lost Colony. When John White finally returned to Roanoke Island in 1590, the English colony had vanished, and he allegedly found the words 'CRO ' and 'CROATOAN ' carved on two trees. When White saw that, he thought that the colonists got help from the Croatan Indians on Hatteras Island. The Croatans were peaceful and friendly with the settlers, so the English could have a good relationship with them when the colony was established in 1587. There are many theories about what happened to them: one of them is that they managed to integrate themselves with the Croatan people.

Early Jamestown In 1607, English Colonists set out on three ships and sailed up the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. They planned to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America. Many colonists died at early Jamestown. There were many reasons the English settlers died at early Jamestown, including their relationship with the local Native Americans, issues with the environment, and their skills.

Raleigh had instructed them to start a colony on the Chesapeake Bay. On their way to Chesapeake Bay White and his men were going to pick up Grenville 's men from the Roanoke fort and take them to the new colony, but when White 's ship landed at Roanoke on July 22, 1587 they only found the skeleton of a Englishmen. When there was no one to be found at the Roanoke fort Simon Fernandez, the fleet 's commander, ordered that the new colony be established at Roanoke. His motives are still unknown to this day. Because of White relations were reestablished with the Croatan and other tribes, but the tribes that Lane quarreled with previously, refused to meet

In 1587, John White led a group of one hundred women, men, and children in an attempt to build a colony in the new world. After White sailed back to England a year later to bring more supplies, and didn 't return for another three years, the colony mysteriously vanished. There are many theories as to what happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Some say that the settlers were driven out by violence, other’s think that they all died of disease. Personally, my partner and I believe that there were multiple factors that contributed to the Colony’s disappearance.

There are a lot of stories about the lost colony of Roanoke and how the colonists that lived there disappeared. Some say they starved to death and some say the indians might have come and attacked them. Personally I think that the colonists left due to their lack of resources. There is some evidence supporting my hypothesis but also there is a lot that contradicts it.

Also without John white 's help the colony may have just went downhill. I also think that the colony was trying to go out to sea and was stuck in a storm or their ship went down into the water. They may have joined the native americans instead of just having 2 different colonies. Like one website said that maybe they were wiped out by storm like a hurricane. They could 've moved to another spot near where it where the lost colony was so people who are looking for the lost colony just maybe have to travel to find them.

White found only a few clues that only add to the mystery of the lost colony. In the mystery behind the Roanoke colony, many archaeologists believe the colony was absorbed into a friendly native american tribe, but there are other explanations on what could’ve happened. The disappearance of
