Book report
I've read the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about the teenage girl Melinda, who has just started Merryweather High. She knew from the beginning that she wouldn't fit in, that she wouldn't be one of the popular girls. Every one hates her after what happened during summer, her previous friends don't want to know nothing about Melinda anymore and the rumours about her aren't so positive either. She will forever be the girl who called the police in the middle of the party and no one bothered to look up the reason behind the call.
My thoughts on the book are a bit cloudy, I'm not sure what to think, I don't like nor do I dislike it. It's just not my kind of book and it didn't really catch me as a reader, but I

I’ll start of with the supporting characters in the book, one word: overdramatic. Drama isn’t always my cup of tea and this book and its characters seem to love it, or that is what I felt sometimes (Maybe I’m the overdramatic one right now).
For example; Melindas ex-bestfriends started ignoring her after she called the police during a party and that is relatively exaggerated to a certain degree, I get that someone would get mad but if you really are bestfriends then it wouldn’t be a problem to try to understand the situation and try to make up.
The teachers weren’t “normal” and that’s how it often is in novels, movies etc, but the art teacher was abnormal in a cool way. He sort of supported her and pushed her into recovery from the traumatizing event she’s been through.
Melinda made a friend in the beginning of the book, Heather, who was extremely talkactive and undoubtedly wanted to climb up the social ladder in high school. Their friendship was nice while it lasted and I think the author described Heather in a good way and you could easily imagine her in real life. And now to the main character, Melinda
Throughout the book, Melinda has problems with her family. For example a problem with her family is that her parents don't listen or talk to her. Also her dad just comes home drunk not talking to her. Also Melinda has a lot of problems with her friends like. The problems with here friends is they don’t like each other anymore and the readers don’t know why.
Most of the information is presented in a recessive way rather than a factual statement. Meaning that instead of the author coming out and stating an event or factual evidence they present it in a way that forces the reader to look for it, this is done because some information may not be needed by anyone, someone, or everyone. Lots of information in this book was useful to me in many ways. Reading the story about Melinda has shown me that sometimes, people just need someone to talk to. That even though people may act fine and seem fine they may be very distanced from true happiness because of something that happened in there past, and if they do not have someone that will listen to them then they may allow it to define their future, but, if someone is willing to just listen to them, then they may be able to get past the traumatic event(s) that they are letting define them.
The realistic fiction novel, Speak, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, begins with a confused, depressed, and alone 14- year old girl named Melinda Sordino. She enters her freshman year at Merryweather High School in Syracuse not knowing many people. Even on the very first day, Melinda feels like an outcast. She realizes that everyone belongs to a clan, whether it was the Jocks, Cheerleaders, Marthas, Goths, ect. Melinda, however, is clanless.
For example, on page one-hundred and twenty-four of the novel, Melinda states, “I have to stay away from the closet, go to all my classes. I will make myself normal. Forget the rest of it.” This shows that Melinda has not been good in school and been interacting with
Ever since what happened to her, she has been keeping a secret that she struggles to let out. Because she called the police after the tragedy of what happened to her (need to find a word), the people at the party, including her friends, functionally spurned her. The school year begins and Melinda only makes one friend, Heather, a new student (change up) to be favored by the studetns aat MerryWeather high school. However (change), Melinda is not engaged in the idea and instead spends her time in the janitor’s closet in which she found to be unused )at school + change up a bit).Around the school, Melonda sees “IT”, also kniwn as Andy
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is about a girl named Melinda Sordino , a girl who was raped her freshman year. Three things that helped her finally “ Speak” were , art class , symbolism of trees, and finally accepting it . To Melinda Sordino , the only safe place was the art room , and when she gave her own grades , this was the only class with an “A”. "You did a good job with that Cubist sketch," he says.
The novel Speak was written by Laurie Halse Anderson, which features a girl named Melinda who is starting her first year in high school. Melinda is hated by her peers and seem to have a heavyweight surrounding her. As the story goes on the reader learns that Melinda’s depressive state is because of the traumatic experience of being raped. Throughout the novels entirety Melinda is shown attempting to take control over her life and to get through the school year in one piece. Speak gave many people the opportunity to put themselves in the place of a rape victim.
Imagine yourself being a young teenage girl who’s been raped and now suffers from it. In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, tells a story about freshman, Melinda who experiences high school in a way nobody should experience it. The summer before Melinda’s before freshman year, she had experienced an assault at a party. Ever since that situation had occurred, Melinda’s suffers being bullied at school, has problems at school, and struggles with issues at home. Nobody at school will talk to Melinda including her “friend” since forever, Rachel Bruin.
This review didn’t showcase any of the negative and weak points in the story. This makes the review seem very biased and unbelievable. Every book has at least one downfall and by not including a counterargument in their review gives off the impression that they may have been paid to put this book in a good light. I wouldn’t buy the book based off of this review
The next way that other students shape Melinda’s identity is through giving her hope and then taking it away when she did not realize that she had any. When Melinda finds out that Heather decided to go her own way,
Though the plot is really good, there are still some things that weren’t as good. One thing that I thought was a little weird was that the book was written at a highschool level. Another thing was the abrupt sentence changes and some of the sentences were worded a little differently. Also, some things were reiterated more than needed and certain words were way overused. Yet, even with all of these lesser things there was still some really good things(besides the plot) that I noticed.
At the end of the story she finally found her voice and was able to stand up for herself. In the beginning, Melinda didn't talk to anyone, barely even to her parents. She says, “I have tried so hard to forget every second of that stupid party and here I am in the middle of a hostile crowd that hates me for what I had to do. I can't tell them what really happened” (Anderson, 28).
“Center Field” The book I'm reviewing is "Center Field" by Robert Lipsyte. The book is about a kid named Mike Semak. Mike is a star center fielder for his high school baseball team. His life was going great.
Also she makes the characters do things that I don't a imagine happening with the story but she makes them fit in anyway. I rate this book a 9.5/10 because the author used great character description and good description but I felt like there was something missing in the story but I don't know what it was or how to explain. I felt like the book had everything that a good book need and all the things that I like in the book. All in all the book was a great book, it had great description and I hope that you read it and think the same thoughts as I did.
The main character of Speak is named Melinda and she faces social affiliation throughout the book. My first reason is her group of friends that stopped being her friend after she called the police on a party. “I am outcast” as Mel said when nobody in the school will talk to her. Her former best friend, Rachel, became the popular person and Rachel hates her. Second reason is Heather and Melinda not being friends anymore.
