Character Analysis: Night By Rabbi Eliahu

A “father is a son’s first hero” (unknown). But what exactly is a hero? The exact definition of a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. In the eyes of a young boy, it is easy to hold their own father on such a high and honorable pedestal; to them, it is inconceivable that their father could be anything but that strong and courageous figure. Be that as it may, the traumatic, unfortunate events that Elie Wisel was forced through, changed how he perceived his father.

Eliezer Wiesel loses his confidence in god, family and humankind through the encounters he has from the Nazi death camp. Eliezer loses confidence in god. He battles physically and rationally forever and no more accepts there is a divine being. "Never should I overlook those minutes which killed my god and my spirit and turned my fantasies to dust..."(pg 32). Elie endeavored to spare himself and asks god commonly to bail him and take him out of his hopelessness.

When they first arrived at Auschwitz Elie and his father looked to each other for support and survival, Sometimes Elie’s father being the only thing keeping him alive. In their old community Elie’s father was a strong-willed and respected community leader, as the book went on you could see how the roles were becoming reversed he was becoming weaker and more reliant on Elie to take care of him. Their father son bond had always been strong and only grew stronger with the things they had to endure. “My God, Lord of the Universe, give me strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahou’s son has done” Elie was disgusted when he saw Rabbi Eliahou’s son abandon his father to help improve his chances of his survival he prayed he’d never do such a thing, but as his father becoming progressively more reliant on Elie he started to see his father as more of a burden than anything else.

The father-son relationship ended in Elie feeling guilt and relief that progressed up from never wanting to be separate from having no relationship at all. Schlomo and Elie went through so many situations which brought them closer but caused them so much pain, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Think of a circumstance where you were so hungry and thirsty, that you did not even care to think about your father anymore. That circumstance goes against common father-son relationships. The common father-son motif is where the father looks out and cares for the son. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, he explains why the circumstances around a father-son relationship can change their relationship, whether it 's for the better or the worse. Since the book is about the life of Elie in a Nazi concentration camp, the circumstances were harsh and took a toll on multiple father-son relationships.

The relationship of elie and his father changed when his father started to get weak and elie needed to take care of him. For example, when the father of Elie got weak, Elie needed to bring him food because the father couldn't stand by himself. Consequently, a random person came and told eli to stop giving him his rations of food because he was going to die anyways. Not becoming atheist but dropping the notion that god is wonderful and amazing and should be worshiped day in and day out and should be sacrificed for and prayed to and begged forgiveness of.

Belief and Faith is a “double-edged sword” to the jews, it cuts both ways. It keeps them alive, and at the same time makes them oblivious, and leads to their suffering. Over time, Elie’s belief in god, diminishes and eventually he questions God’s existence extensively and at point, Elie is infuriated that even though they are being tormented and enslaved, the Jews will still pray to god, and thank him, “If god did exist, why would he let u go through all the pain and suffering (33). This is a major point in the ongoing theme of faith and belief, because for once he is infuriated with the thought of religion in a time of suffering. Throughout the book, with the nazis ultimate goal is to break the jews and make dehumanize them and if anything, their goal is take and diminish their belief.

When these people were being treated in such malicious ways, they started to believe that God wasn’t really there for them. They felt as if He wasn 't there to protect them. Sometimes, they started to rebel against their own religion and turn to their worst enemies for faith. Throughout Elie’s memoir, Night, Elie shows that many people, including himself, lost faith during their stay at the concentration camps. Many other victims of the concentration camps lived to see such tragedies that they began to lose hope in God, as well as he did.

Eli's life was changed drastically in a matter of a couple hours. He saw and went through a lot causing him to lose his religious faith. He isn’t the only one who lost his belief. Others like his father began to lose his faith and sense of hope. At the age of 14 Eli and his family were evacuated from their homes into a ghetto afterwards they are sent to a concentration camp better known as Auschwitz.

We often encourage people to actively pursue their happiness while also wanting to discourage them to escape from reality. However, avoiding your issues is also a way of pursuing happiness, even though this route will prove to be temporary. Elie Wiesel helped people around the world learn about the Holocaust through his book “Night.” He wanted people to see the bravery, courage, and guilt of the Jews through his book. “Night” shows the horrific and malicious acts in the German concentration camps during the Holocaust.
