Elie didn’t see a life without God, to him it was unimaginable. About a year later, the Germans had invaded Transylvania and were currently moving Elie and his fellow Jews into concentration camps. While leaving the haven of his home town, Elie prayed to God, on page 20, he says, “Oh God, Master of the Universe, in your infinite compassion have mercy on us…”. After they arrived at the camp, Ellie was ripped away from the innocence that he and God walked together in. When the Jews arrived at the concentration camp, humanity seemed to slip right out of grasp, opposed to when they first arrived at the camp.

Eli feels he is mislead by the actions of these betraying prisoners; why would God be so cruel to make them turn on those who they loved? Eli is taught and raised that God is watching from above, and that he is good. Eli is put to the test when he is forced to watch the hanging of other prisoners. He cannot seem to bear the thought of religion after witnessing the Gestapo hang a small child, only to demonstrate the act of true evil. It is at points like this, where he had lost all faith and hope in humanity.

He is a Holocaust survivor and tells about his time in the concentration camps. It is in first person about how he felt, what he saw and what had happened to him. Hope is good until you lose it.

The Holocaust was an extremely tragic event and Elie Wiesel’s autobiographical book, “Night” does a very good job of capturing the vivid events that occurred. In this book, the main character, Eliezer must survive through both mental and physical abuse. He is forced to go days without food and water, and has to deal with the loss of his father, mother, sister and friends while in the concentration camp. Although Eliezer had to face these many horrors, the biggest thing he had to face was himself and everything that had been taken from him. After being rescued, Eliezer got sick from food poison, and spent two weeks hospitalized “in and out of death” (Wiesel 115).

Wiesel also loses hope in humanity because of the violence. For example, he starts to lose faith in surviving because he thinks that humanity has changed as a whole, because all the horrendous things that the Germans are doing. Wiesel has changed through the book because before the holocaust he was hopeful and after he has grown an shell of deliel towards humanity .Wiesel states “One more stab to the heart one more reason to hate. One Less Reason To Live”.

“How could any god permit this to happen.” As a result, of witnessing such gruesome acts he refuses to participate in any religious activities. Con subsequently, he refuses to fast in order to protest against god. Eli's, traumatic experience causes for his loss of faith.
