Character Analysis: The Watson's Go To Birmingham

Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Both of these young men grew up in roughly the same environment, the ghettos of Baltimore, Maryland and the Bronx, New York, respectively.

In the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother Byron is so mean to people. Kenny has treated an abundance of different people extremely better than Byron has been. When Byron got his lips stuck Kenny tried not to hurt Byron as much as he could even though Byron would have tortured Kenny. Also, Kenny was nice enough to share his lunch with his Rufus. He even feels bad sometimes for the kid that bullies him.

In Watsons go the Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, the main characters are kenny he is ten and very nice and respectful and kind. Byron is thirteen and a real brat so he is a juvenile delinquent, and Joetta is five and nice but has mood swings. Dad is a real money spender, Mom is a real big money saver and cheap in some ways. The Watsons want to live a peaceful life in Alabama so they can visit grandma Sands, also Kenny wants to get rid of Byron to fit in while Byron wants to stay with the Watsons. But, Byron is turning nice and Kenney is very smart, and Byron is playing with fire and Watsons have had enough of Byron's bad behavior.

He had a lot of angry building up inside of him, especially after the death of his brother. If he had better friends and was able to talk to them about anything and everything, he probably would get all the anger out and be a less harsh and judgmental person. He would fit in better. It’s important to have friends or people that will actually be their when they're needed the

In the novel “The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963”, there is a character named Byron Watson. Byron is the brother of Kenny Watson and Joetta Watson, and the son of Wilona Watson and Daniel Watson. The Watsons plan to send Byron away to live with his strict grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama due to his dangerous, mischievous, and negative behavior. I strongly agree with this decision for three reasons.

To begin with, Geoffrey and Tobias Wolff’s lives were filled with misfortune, misery, and abuse. In addition to this, the brothers also went through their own form of hardship while living with their parents. Geoffrey, who lived with his father and Tobias, living with his mother. With this in mind, I will compare and contrast the central conflict behind their family issues and apply it to their work. In other words, compare Geoffrey and Tobias Wolff’s childhood and look at how it impacted them as adults.

Byron and kenny Watson both go through a lot of changes on the inside and out, but Byron has changed the most. In my opinion Byron changed the most because he cares about his family even more, he acts more responsible and, is a lot more understanding One of the ways Byron changes is that he cares more about his family.

But I will give the author this, the book had great slang from the old days and it was pretty funny. In the novel, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother, Byron, is so mean to him and to others. When comparing the way Byron treats others and by the way Kenny treats others, it can conclude Kenny definitely treats other more kindly than Byron. Byron partakes in fighting with a lot of aggression during or after school hours. When Kenny is supposed to be watching on the sidelines until the fight is over, he does not because he dislikes fighting, or watching people fight. While Kenny beats up Larry Dunn, Kenny feels sorry for him, even after what Larry has done to him and his friends while being bullied by the majority of the school.

The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life.

I chose to read The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. The reason why I chose to read this book was because I find the Civil Rights Movement to be a very interesting topic to learn about. I enjoy reading historical fiction books because it is very cool to see the story from someone's point of view. I also decided to read this book because when I was younger I enjoyed reading books from the I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis and I figured that since this was from the point of view of a younger person close to my age, but it was a little longer and a higher grade level, that it was a step above that series and those are some of the reasons I chose to read The Watsons go to Birmingham. I learned many funny lessons from The Watsons go to Birmingham.

Desire is the need for an object, a feeling or a person. One can have a desire for something that is essential for survival, such as water or food, but desire could be used to harm others or oneself. Through A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael’s perspective of desire was altered dramatically. These desires were changed from his surroundings or events that were taking place. In the book, Ishmael was easily manipulated by his desires.

“Mr. Freeman is ugly. Big old grasshopper body, like a stilt- walking circus guy. Nose like a credit card sunk between his eyes. But he smiles at us as we file into class”(10).

An education can lead to a valuable set of skills. It did for Wes Moore, the author of The Other Wes Moore, Wes found another person with the exact same name as he and they both had different turning points in their life’s which resulted in one being in prison and the other writing a book about the whole thing. The author was motivated to do better even with his environment trying to tear him down. I can personally relate to this because I have begun to do the same with this semester of school. Wes and I have some things in common, he strived to make a better life for himself

Is Sherlock Holmes doing what's best for the people of London or is he above the law in his own way? Throughout the stories and tales of Sherlock Holmes, the constant recurrence of catching the villain and solving the case is apparent throughout Holmes’s legend, but is he really doing anything to save the people of his city and stopping crime? Holmes’s mythos always starts with a crime seen through Dr. Watson’s eye, and we see the conclusion of the case through however the crime is never stopped before hand. Within the book, The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The detective always uses the crime as a starting point to the mystery however he never prevents a life to be lost before the crime is committed.
