Compare and Contrast Argument Essay
Adam Shepard and Chris McCandless are marvelous people who journey out to figure out if the American Dream was still alive and from both of their perspective both did achieve it, but one did not make it back. Both had a different objective of achieving the American Dream, McCandless went into the wilderness with only 10 pounds of rice, and a camera, while Shepard went into the city of Charleston with only $25, the clothes on his back, a sleeping bag, and a duffle bag. McCandless went into the wilderness because he said that his parents do not really love, he gets everything from them, and he wants to be more self-reliance. Shepard went into Charleston because he wanted to prove that the American Dream can be achieved anywhere only if you have the commitment to do it. Chris McCandless had a bigger impact than Adam Shepard because he impacted the people he met along the way, he was more self-reliant than Shepard, and found happiness out in the wilderness.
First, was along McCandless journey he met some pretty amazing people. When he was walking along the side of the road he was picked up by a hippie couple and they really enjoyed his stay with them. So to prove his point that he wanted to more self-reliant and to achieve the American Dream he needed to go out to the wilderness where there is no one but him and the animals that live out there. The way McCandless show reliance is how he had to hunt animals in order to survive and had to make other essentials materials. In the book “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless had many decisions to leave his old life behind and start over. Chris’ decision to leave was justified for the following reasons. When he suddenly disappeared, it made it easier for him to let go of his past and focus on what he wants to do in the future. McCandless could make all his own decisions, nobody had a chance to tell him that he could not leave and certainly did not allow anyone to find out where he was going. Finally he didn’t agree to social norms.
Adam Shepard and Chris McCandless were both two very driven men when they both embarked upon their journey. The two men had very different mindsets when it came to what they were trying to achieve , Adam Shepard was determined to prove that the American Dream is achievable through hard work and determination. While Chris McCandless just wanted to show self reliance, and find complete and utter happiness. Even though both had a very different purpose Adam Shepard's story stuck with me more. McCandless made silly errors that could have been prevented if he was prepared, or knew what he was doing out in Alaska.
Although you 've may have seen or heard many people taking crazy trips out in the world to accomplish a thing or two you may have even heard of these two guys. Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.
Society’s values influence people to construct their personal mores around them, and those who do not are not accepted by society. In our society, those who have well-paying careers are valued above those who do not. So when McCandless decided against following the path society expects him to, his parents were upset. “Chris informed his parents that he had no intention of going to college. When Walt and Billie suggested that he needed a college degree to attain a fulfilling career, Chris answered that careers were demeaning ‘twentieth-century inventions,’ more of a liability than an asset, and that he would do fine without one, thank you” (114).
McCandless and McCunn's ventures into the wild had similar intentions and strategies. Although, the outcome of their ventures were slightly different. Both men displayed a certain degree of common sense. They were both friendly, curious, responsible, educated and intelligent men. Having fairly average lives, with big aspirations for their future.

The Alaskan Bush is one of the hardest places to survive without any assistance, supplies, skills, and little food. Jon Krakauer explains in his biography, Into The Wild, how Christopher McCandless ventured into the Alaskan Bush and ultimately perished due to lack of preparation and hubris. McCandless was an intelligent young man who made a few mistakes but overall Krakauer believed that McCandless was not an ignorant adrenalin junkie who had no respect for the land. Krakauer chose to write this biography because he too had the strong desire to discover and explore as he also ventured into the Alaskan Bush when he was a young man, but he survived unlike McCandless. Krakauer’s argument was convincing because he gives credible evidence that McCandless was not foolish like many critics say he was.
Chris McCandless on the other hand, was a man that ought adventure and wanted to travel. He seeked thrills and wanted to prove man could win against nature. However, he was seen as an outcast as most believe he was stupid for burning his money and going into the Stampede Trail illprepared. In this comparison essay, I will be comparing these two men from two different time

If I could live a day as any celebrity of my choice, I would most definitely choose Carrie Underwood. I would select her for several reasons. The reasons include her bold faith and enormous heart. The other reasons would be her inspirational story and lifestyle. One of the biggest reasons for me choosing Carrie, is that she is a devout Christian who grew up in a small Baptist church in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Perspective of Christopher McCandless’s Life Callarman’s argument to Christopher McCandless’s is relatable and understanding, but he does not see the full picture. Christopher McCandless had everything in his life: money, material, family, prestige etc. but the only thing he wanted to fully experience is the outside world, to get out of his comfort zone and see how nature really feels like. I would agree with Callarman’s argument because he was arrogant and unenlightenment, but I also would disagree because he died doing what he loved and a place he wanted to be.
