Westward Expansion The Louis and Clark expedition best represents the start to Westward expansion following the end of the American Revolution in 1783. The Westward expansion began when Thomas Jefferson strived for expansion in order to form trade routes from the Atlantic to Pacific. The expedition of Louis and Clark took a total of 2 years and 4 months, covering 8,000 miles. They traveled the Missouri and Columbia river until they reached their destination. The long time period of travel had a tremendous effect on American history and society.

On the way home they split apart from each other to go separate ways to try to find a faster way back home. Lewis and Clark finally found each other again at the Missouri River and made the last part of their trip back to St. Louis. They traveled about 8,000 miles either by foot, boat, or horseback. They traveled to Washington, D.C. While they were traveling, they were greeted by people of every town they stopped in.

Meriwether Lewis was very significant in the Westward Expansion. He was one of the real leaders of this movement for over fifty years, and was one of the ones to lead America forward. Even today, his legacy still remains strong in America. After receiving our Louisiana territory in 1803, President Jefferson wanted to learn as much as possible about our new territory, therefore he sent Meriwether Lewis to learn about and explore the land. Lewis was one of President Jefferson’s secretary members, and Jefferson specifically chose him because he had the perfect skills required for a journey like this.

Prior to the Purchase of the Louisiana Territory, Thomas Jefferson was desired to explore the area to see if there was an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean and claim that land for the United States. The main goals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was to map the region, collect information on new species, and to establish contact with the Native groups and make peace with them.
