Compare And Contrast Rainsford And Zaroff

The story-“The most dangerous game” is written by the author Richard Connell during the time of World War-I. The most dangerous game is a short story about a hunter named Sanger Rainsford who is marooned on an island after accidentally falling off a yacht. After Rainsford falls, he frantically swims to the nearest island in search of food and shelter. However this deserted island is not an ordinary island. This is called Ship Trap Island.

I have read the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In this story, Rainsford, a faimed author and hunter, falls off his ship and winds up on an island where he meets a man. This man turns out to be a former Russian General, General Zarroff. General Zarroff , it just so happens, is a hunter in his own but of a different nature. To escape the island he must outwit his host in the General’s own game of hunting.

In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Hunting animals and rodents are normal to everyday people, but for General Zaroff, hunting people is his everyday desire. His inhumane attitude creates him into a murderer for his own pleasure. Rainsford’s philosophy is much like Zaroff's. Rainsford disagrees with Whitney, who believes that animals can comprehend the fear of pain and death.
