Richard Connell tells the exciting story of acclaimed hunter Sanger Rainsford and his struggles having to escape the human-hunter general Zaroff. Connell presents a thrilling story with intricate characters and detailed settings, all adding up to the enticing adventure known as The Most Dangerous Game.

He is greeted by a man named General Zaroff. A hunter like him but something is off about him. He hunts Humans. The only animal that can reason. Rainsford is in a terrible situation.

While reading Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”, readers find that the determining fact that makes it so gripping is the intense style in which he develops tension and foreshadowing to create suspense and a sense of uneasiness. Especially when Rainsford tumbles off his yacht in the Caribbean into the “blood warm waters” (15). “His pipe, striking the rope, was knocked from his mouth. He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his mouth”. Readers are afraid for Rainsford, that maybe he won’t survive the harsh environment of the fierce jungle.

Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. There are always going to be changes form book to movie no matter what. The plot of both of these is the same though; A man is lost on an island and meets General Zaroff. The man is very fortunate at the time because General Zaroff is welcoming.

“The Most Dangerous Game” shows how wealth and power can change people as well as starting the downfall of civilization. General Zaroff, is a wealthy, strong man. What he does with his wealth is unheard of though. Zaroff posits that because he is strong and rich, he can do whatever he wants. The thing he wants to do the most, kill humans.

Whitney is stating that the jaguars must feel some sort of feeling like fear or terror but in contrast Rainsford states that the jaguars have no understanding of feelings. Then Rainsford is put on a island where he symbolically represents the jaguar and General Zaroff would symbolically represent the hunter.

Zaroff is shown to be violent in the story when he talks about how much he likes to kill things. “‘Simply this: hunting had ceased to be what you call ‘a sporting proposition.’” (Connell 69). This quote shows that Zaroff is violent because during this part, he is talking about how he was getting tired of how easy it was to kill everything.

Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change.
