Comparing Plymouth And Jamestown

Plymouth and Jamestown were both early American colonies that greatly influenced the rest of American history. These two colonies both had their differences. Many differences were small and some were large. Plymouth was a colony built by puritans in 1620 in Massachusetts. Jamestown was built by the Virginia Company of London in 1607 in Virginia.

August 18, 1590 John White returns to Roanoke and finds deserted land. After helping establish the first English settlement on the Island of Roanoke, off the coast of modern day North Carolina, John White reluctantly returned to England for supplies. Delayed by war for three years, he returns in 1590 to find the colonists are gone. It is still not known what happened to them.

There were 110 men willing to risk everything they had to have a new lease on life. These men were headed to Jamestown, the first permanent settlement. By the end of December only 40 settlers would survive. So, why did so many colonist die?

First of all, Jamestown was mostly a male populated colony because they all worked independently with one goal in mind which was to become prosperous off of tobacco. Unlike Jamestown, Plymouth was a family oriented community and always worked together to accomplish many tasks. Jamestown and Plymouth both had English leaders. There were many differences between these two settlements like their economy, religion, climate, trade, and the way people live their lives. Both of these colonies had their own way in which they went by and lived. They had a different set of rules they followed and ways that they ruled. In the end they were both successful as they got help from other people, but in the process lost many lives. It was the beginning of their journey to success. The first colony that came to the new world and stayed was the colony of Jamestown.

Both colonies the Colony at Plymouth and the Colony at Jamestown had rough conditions in surviving. The colony at Plymouth was more of the American Dream in my opinion. My reason is because they’re based off of religion instead of money and stuff like the colony at Jamestown. Many reasons i have but the first reason is with keeping religion first is the most important thing. The second reason is that money doesn’t just bring happiness ,and money was all the colony at Jamestown cared for.

In addition, both colonies struggled in creating a stable society, economy and government. The location of these two colonies was also a determining factor in their survival. Over time, ten colonies were established along the Atlantic coast of North America. The first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and in 1620 a ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking it as the second permanent English settlement.

Starting in the early 1600’s settlers from England came to “The New World.” England and Spain were competing to claim this new undiscovered land. The English were the first to claim the land by sending the first group of settlers, the Chesapeake settlers. They settled in present day Virginia and Maryland. The Chesapeake settlers came for commercial and profit.

Beginning a life in the New World was a difficult and extended process. Many colonists made attempts to settle here, which failed for different reasons. There are two colonies that beat the odds and overcame their challenges. These colonies were called Jamestown and Plymouth. By using different methods and skills, they created new land for the people of Europe.

The Jamestown colony came to establish English power in the New World and to explore the New World and also to plunder the Portuguese ships passing with slaves and other important cargo. The Plymouth colony, which consisted of all Puritans, came because King Charles I was persecuting the Puritans in England. In other words, the Puritans wanted religious freedom, so their only option was to come to the New World to avoid death. Also, Jamestown colony was there to go back and forth from England and stay under the reign of the King. The Plymouth colony came to stay and escape the reign of King Charles
