DBQ: Why did so many colonists die at Jamestown? The king of England, (James I) sent 3 ships in 1607 carrying 100+ people to Jamestown, Virginia. They all hoped to become rich, find gold, and get their own piece of land. This was going to be the 1st permanent english settlement in the new world.

Massachusetts Bay Colony was one of the first 13 original colonies. The name Massachusetts is an indian word. It means “at the great hill” or “large hill place.” Boston became its capital in 1632. Boston was a very popular port city, and had lots of available jobs for immigrants.

He did not return to the colony for three years due to war between Spain and England. The Lumbee tribe believe that in response to White’s delayed return, the colonists, having positive relations with the Croatoan, assimilated with the tribe. While there are many outlandish theories about the disappearance of Roanoke Colony, the most rational outcome is assimilation. The Roanoke colonists landed at Roanoke Island in July of 1587.

John White decided to return back to England in 1586 and sail back to Roanoke with more food and supplies. White left the colony, including his great granddaughter; Virginia Dare the first English baby born in the new world. However, White’s return back to Roanoke was delayed three years due to the War with Spain. When White finally returned back to the island in 1590, he was met with a “Lost Colony”. Every single person, including Virginia Dare and her mother, were missing.

The colony of Jamestown was at a population of 504 after an arrival of a fleet of 9 ships carrying women, men, children and much needed food and supplies. Captain John Smith took hold of the chaotic government and put in place rigid policies of discipline and agricultural cultivation. In 1608 a gunpowder accident wounding Smith, his rivals used this opportunity to force him to return to England and name George Percy as his successor as president of the council. The day before John Smith’s departure, Captain Davis arrived with 16 other men adding to the population of Jamestown. However, a few weeks later, president Percy sent Captain Ratcliffe to build a fort for fishing and trade at Point Comfort.

Events such as the colonization of Jamestown show the curiosity and courage of human beings throughout all of the years of their existence. Jamestown was a colony that shouldn’t have happened, after the English saw what happened to the Roanoke colony that had mysteriously disappeared. The English showed their courage by trying again with Jamestown. This isn’t the first event that shows the curiosity and bravery of humans. Events such as the moon landing and the first airplane at Kitty Hawk show the sheer mettle of humans.

The people who settled in Colonial Massachusetts had a very religious point of view. Their whole goal was to create a puritan society. This led to them being very unified and working together as a community for the greater

New England was a colony that was settled because the people that came from England wanted to find their freedom from their country. The people that came to the United States was to find freedom through religion, which the people from Mother England were not given the freedom to pursue their religious believes. The first settlement in New England was when John Winthrop came to the United States. In this settlement came the founders of the colony of New England. Basically the people from the first settlement were the ones that set up the way that the people were going to live and the type of government that they were going to establish and follow.

Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the monarchy began to expand their power and influence, eventually becoming absolute rulers. Having support from the merchant class, the monarchy attempted to unify and stabilize the nation states. In the late seventeenth, early eighteenth centuries, with hopes of expanding English trade and acquiring a broader market for English manufactured goods, the nation states were wealthy enough to fund voyages of discovery and exploration. Over time, ten colonies were established along the Atlantic coast of North America. The first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and in 1620 a ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking it as the second permanent English settlement.

The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. These were founded by similar people but, with their strikingly differences, grew into separate political, economic and social structures. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. They were part of the Anglican religion.

The Roanoke colony, also known as “The Lost Colony” was founded in 1585. The first couple years seemed to be going well until John White had to sail back to England for supplies. When he returned the whole colony had been deserted, and all 117 had gone missing.

This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.
