Khaled Hosseini’s, The Kite Runner, is a book that depicts modern Afghanistan and all the violence as well as how “political change” (AmirDabbaghian and Solimany) “influenced” (AmirDabbaghian and Solimany) citizens in Afghanistan. Hosseini talks about a kid’s life and all the problems he went through along the way. One of the main themes in this novel was betrayal. The way Hosseini incorporates the theme in the story is by using various literary devices, tone, and conflict. To begin with, Khaled Hosseini uses a variety of literary devices to portray the theme.

This childhood flashback effectively introduces, and characterizes, two of the novel’s main characters, along with establishing a relationship between the narrator, later named Amir, and his childhood friend.

Mariam is married to Rasheed. Rasheed a controlling shoemaker, who is motivated to replace his dead son. After discovering Mariam cannot conceive a child, Rasheed started to abuse Mariam. Rasheed unhappy that he can’t replace his son, he marries Laila. Laila gives Rasheed the son that he wanted.

When the Kamal’s help protect Lola from the German soldiers, the Nazis, they do actions that could have affected their religion as a Muslim couple. This chapter also discusses example of a Muslim woman’s wedding and role as a wife. This will be an example of the values and beliefs that relate to the Albanian community and the Albanian women. To begin her novel, she emphasizes her happiness at home in her city of Swat, Pakistan with her family and friends at school. “I can hear the neighborhood kids playing cricket in the alley behind our home. I can hear the hum of the bazaar not far away. And if I listen very closely, I can hear Safina, my friend next door, tapping on the wall we share so she can tell me a secret. (Yousafzai,1)”

At this current point, Mariam, the other main character, came to terms with her demoralizing life and marriage. For years, she endured a troublesome marriage with Rasheed, a rather conservative and short-tempered man, that ranged from verbal abusement to fatal-like torture. The marriage ultimately faltered because of one discrepancy: Mariam’s infertility. Rasheed has endeavored numerous times to bear a son after his first son drowned before Mariam’s marriage. Without a single male offspring, Rasheed has lowered Mariam to a lower rank, one that is clustered with picky disappointments and inhumane practices.

The story starts off with Mariam, a girl whom is mentally tortured by her mother.. Mariam lives with her mother, Nana, for the first fifteen years of her life, but something tragic happens which forces her to get married to an abusive middle-aged man named Rasheed in a distant city. The three main women in this book are Ida, Christine and Rayona. Each protagonist represents a different generation and age group, allowing the novel to access a broader audience. By giving these women both strengths and weaknesses which people struggle with every day, the author invites the reader to truly relate to these women. It also encourages empathy as many readers will have experienced some of the struggles these characters

In regards to the historiography of gender politics in the Victorian era, the social position of women and femininity had become a problematic issue. Similarly, the gender apartheid instilled prior to the civil war in Afghanistan. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, initially published in 2007, is set in Afghanistan from the early 1960s to the early 2000s. In this, it explores the story of Mariam and Laila as the protagonists, who teach the reader the reality of life as a woman in a backward Islamic country. The story covers three decades of anti-Soviet jihad, civil war and Taliban tyranny seen from the perspectives of these two women and observes how they become to create a bond, despite having come from previously living in very different backgrounds.

He uses characterization, conflict, symbolism, and flashback. These literary elements used by Hosseini help to prove that the relationship between two people can be built up by life’s conflicts along with the art of silence. Society takes on a tremendous role in the book. Every man in Afghanistan faces the standards that society sets everyday. This situation is similar to the branches and trunk of a tree.

The injustice Mariam endures in the novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, leads Mariam on a struggling journey impacting her future path in life. The injustice that Mariam endures leaves a permanent mark on her life and impacts her from the beginning. Life wasted no time throwing the cruel injustices of life at Mariam. Mariam was marked a harami, otherwise known as a child without a father, even though her father Jalil was alive, near, and well. “She understood then what Nana meant, that a harami was an unwanted thing: that she, Mariam, was an illegitimate person that would never have legitimate claim to the things other people had, things such as love, family, home, acceptance.”

Nana tells Mariam about the reality of the day she was born and all the struggles she endured during labor. Mariam’s birth story started “ on a damp, overcast day in the spring of 1959” (11). The weather in this story symbolizes the birth of Mariam, because the spring symbolizes the happiness of having

Mariam longed to place a ruler on a page and draw important-looking lines”(Hosseini ). Mariam is an example of how women are banned from an education and whose life could have been changed by education. Instead of being educated, she is sheltered by her mother and lives the rest of her life without high expectations of herself. Nana teaches her that an Afghan woman has to endure the life that is chosen for her because she does not have a say. Nana even says "There is only one, only one skill a woman like you and me needs in life, and they don't teach it in school.

In the story, the women are oppressed by the society. This is narrated through the delivery of the main antagonist’s id, the gender inequality in enforcing laws and the marginalization of women. As a result of Rasheed’s id, Mariam and Laila are consistently physically and emotionally

Abstract women have been living very miserable lives throughout the history somewhere because of gender differences and somewhere base on lame excuses of religion. They do not have equal rights, freedom, opportunities as men and have been suffering gender-based violence perpetuated towards them in the male dominated society. Afghan women show great strength and resistance in the face of adverse circumstances. They have developed traumatic problems and in reaction to their problems, they have grown very resilience to the Afghan tradition and men harsh treatment. The research entitled “Trauma and Resistance of Afghan Women: A Critical Study of Khaled Hosseini’s Novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, was intended to critically analyze the novel to explore trauma and resistance of Afghan women.
