Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a very good play because of the emotion and action throughout the play. The play was about many people accusing others of witchcraft and those people going to trial for witchcraft over a course of time. Arthur Miller is an expert at using conflict development , characterization , and plot in The Crucible. This is why Arthur Miller’s play is very good.
Arthur Miller successfully used the device of conflict development in his play The Crucible. Parris says, “trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it “ (Miller 10) . With Parris saying this it causes conflict development by saying if Abigail doesn’t confess to conjuring spirits it is going to lead to a conflict. Another example of Arthur Miller using conflict development is when Abigail says, “Uncle, we did dance; let you tell them I confessed it - and I'll be whipped if I must be. But they’re speakin of witchcraft. Betty’s not witched.” (Miller 10). This shows Abby trying to hide what really happened when in the woods in fear of worse

One example of Arthur Miller using plot is Abigail says,”We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly,Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there's the whole of it.” (Miller 10). Abby telling this to Parris is showing plot by forming basically a lie to try and hide what really happened in the woods. In the play Elizabeth says, ”Why, then, it is not as you told me.” (Miller 54).This forms plot because Elizabeth was lied too by Proctor because he didn’t tell her that he was alone with Abigail which rose tension between Proctor and Elizabeth.More plot being shown is when Proctor says, “Spare me! You forget nothin and forgive nothin. Learn charity,” (Miller 54).This is an example of plot because of the rising tension in the scene when Proctor and Elizabeth were having their
Arthur Miller's play The Crucible demonstrates the craziness that occurred in Salem in 1692. Althoughthe play is fiction, Miller based the plot of his play on verifiable occasions and his characters demonstrate how suspicion and dread can raise. Various characters utilized this dread to profit and they showedselfishness and wrongdoing. The two most wretched characters in the play were Rev. Parris and JudgeDanforth. From the earliest starting point of the play, Rev. Parris showed self-centeredness.
The Crucible was published in the year 1953, written by Arthur Miller. This story's setting revolves around Salem Massachusetts in the bay area. Throughout this story many of the characters endure changes because what is going on around them and the tight situations they are in. In The Crucible There are many situations where many characters have to tell lies to stay alive and not be hanged. Through this process there are a lot of dynamic characters but one that really jumps out in my opinion is the farmer John Proctor.
The Whore of the Crucible The Crucible, a play by the Author Miller, a drama that uses the Salem Witch-trials, a historic event, to convey a powerful message about McCarthyism. In Miller’s work, the rebellion in a moral, puritan society, not to mention she is back-stabbing, licentious and manipulative. First of all, Abigail is back-stabbing. She worked in John and Elizabeth Proctors home as a servant, but little did Elizabeth know that her husband was having an affair with Abigail the whole time, and ever since she has been after his wife Elizabeth. This was back-stabbing because she convinced Tituba to put a curse on Elizabeth hoping to take her place.

The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is one of the leading titles in American literature when it comes to the understanding of human motivation. This literature demonstrates what enables the human mind to push itself forward into doing what is set in their mind. As the setting takes place in the 1690s in Salem, a small town in the new colony of Massachusetts Bay, people were living in a Theocracy and were accusing each other of witchcraft and working with the devil. As a result of these accusations, people were getting executed under the court of Salem, which leads to the theme: fear can drive one to the action of the abnormal. This theme reoccurs in The Crucible, and also in literatures outside The Crucible.
The Director’s Notebook: The Salem witch trials of the spring of 1692 began after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, started having symptoms of being possessed by the devil which then led to the accusations of several local women of witchcraft. Hysteria broke out in Salem; a special court convened in Salem to hear the cases. 19 people were hanged, and 150 more men, women and children were accused over the next several months. By September 1692, the hysteria began abate and public opinion turned against the trials.
Quincy Tyler Ms. Levack Honors English 9 October 10, 2015 The Crucible: The Conflict Within Do people change? Well in the Crucible John Proctor seems to have changed his ways before he dies. John Proctor, the protagonist in Arthur Miller’s drama The Crucible, struggles with his internal conflicts. All of these conflicts cause him tremendous suffering which cause him to change his actions, the way he thinks and how others think of him.
No matter what he did she could never fully trust him , it could never be like it use to be. Just when she finally starts trusting him again, he tells her he went to town and just so happens to see Abigail he tells his wife, he and Abigail were alone together, she is shocked by what he says because after he tries to gain his trust back for so long he’s like yeah and we were alone together
Another human weakness shown in this play is guilt. An example of this is when Proctor can barely look at Abigail after what he did to her. He tells her, I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again” (Miller, 923). Because he knows what he did was wrong, and the fact that he was cheating on his wife was shameful. Another example of this is when Parris is ashamed and feels guilty that witchcraft happened in his
In many plays and books, characters tend to go through different types of conflict. These conflicts include external and internal. An external conflict is a struggle between a person and an outside force; an internal conflict is a mental struggle arising from opposing demands or impulses within a person or character. "The Crucible" is a play written by Arthur Miller, based on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. This play is about a married man, John Proctor, who has an affair with a young adolescent named Abigail Williams.
The central argument in Miller’s article, titled “Are You Now Or Were You Ever”, asserts that the McCarthy era (along with the plot of The Crucible) was started by paranoia and unjust convictions of rather innocent people and was aided by the tension between the communist east and democratic west. He develops this argument through an appeal to logos. Miller identifies the arguments used by the accusing group and logically discredits their statements by deconstructing their details and adding factual evidence to help the audience understand the irrationalities of their allegations. One argument in particular was on how the defendants were promoted to reveal their political beliefs but were left to remain mute, further displaying the injustice
The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.
‘The Crucible’ written by Arthur Miller is a dramatic protest play written in the 1950s. The play follows the 1690 Salem witch hunts and the chaos caused. Miller allegorises 1950 America and the ridiculous nature of the society through suspicions of communism amongst the population which is mirrored perfectly in the 1690 Salem witch trials. Miller uses stylistic features to explore his disapproval of the American 1950 society in the play. Miller uses lengthy exposition pieces to position his flawed protagonist to be relatable and connect to his audience and the opposing views against the society as Proctor carries his authorial voice.
“Character Analysis over The Crucible” Arthur Miller is a commonly-known playwright, most famous for his 1953 play, The Crucible. The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. However, Miller made a few alterations to the historical members of the Salem society in order to suit his dramatic purpose in The Crucible, particularly Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Samuel Parris.
John Proctor’s words towards Elizabeth signal irritation and annoyance. John Proctor, the main character of The Crucible, has an affair with a much younger girl, Abigail Williams, breaking his wife, Elizabeth’s trust in him. Her suspicion of him rises when he tells her he was in a room alone with Abigail. Elizabeth’s growing mistrust begins to aggravate John, which is revealed when he says, “I’ll not have your suspicion any more” (489). Elizabeth is doubtful after learning about John’s affair with Abigail and her lack of trust in her husband begins to anger him.
