In the essay “The Paradox of New Technology” by Dorothy Nixon, the author proposes that for every new advancement in technology we lose something. Nixon uses the telephone as an example, she states that in the early 1900s, Americans counted on the mail as a form of communication. The invention of the telephone changed everything, the telephone made it easier for people to communicate with family and friends. Mothers were able to speak to their children in far distances in an instant. The author hints at that after the invention of the cellular phone, people became dependent on it. Nixon believes that because of the dependency on new technology, people have lost their peace of mind. If a person couldn’t be reached on his or her cell phone, the person calling would become nervous and leave various messages. The author uses a story about seven people in their twenties that went backpacking and were out of cellphone range, …show more content…
Computers are equipped with spell and grammar check, people have thrown the rules of spelling and grammar out of the window. In today’s society texting is the favorite mode of communication, things like punctuation grammar and spelling are forgotten, words are shortened for speedy response. On the website for the University of Alabama (UAB.edu) Carrie Beth Buchanan, an English teacher at Clay-Chalk Ville High School and a participant in the University of Alabama’s Teachers by Teachers program, said, “Many high school students have become dependent on electronic spell-checkers. As a result, I spend a significant amount of time circling misspelled words on assignments.” The dependency people have on technology is obvious in our schools. Young adults are enrolling in college without completely understanding the rules of writing. The overuse of technology has affected many aspects of life in a negative
Modernization of technology limited the freedom to think for one’s self. It has caused the people of the world to rely solely on orders and rules without thinking of the consequences of those actions. The technology once used to enhance your daily life, now runs it. All people who have succumbed to the advancement of technology have given up their freedom to think, and their ability to live life like it was meant to be lived.
When people are talking on a cellular phone and walking around, they tend to lose the sense of what is going on around them, which leaves them blind to any potential threat because of carelessness, and they miss the offer that is given at that moment in time. In Nicholas Carr’s article, “How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” (November 10, 2017) Carr discusses the implications of allowing our smartphones to have such a huge effect on our lives. Smartphones serve many purposes, and have created massive societal effects throughout the world despite being introduced roughly only two decades ago. One can converse with anyone in the world at any given moment, they can watch any television show they want, and they can receive alerts so they no longer have to put effort into remembering things themselves. However, with so much control over people’s own lives, one begins to wonder about the negative consequences of the smartphones themselves.

Are our communication skills declining due to the vast internet use? Technology has given individuals the ability to do things that would otherwise be considered impossible. However, while technology has provided the ability to communicate with people halfway across the world and opened a comfortable space for teens, it is believed to have affected not just the interaction among others, but furthermore writing skills. Although technology and communication has given individuals the ability to do things that would not have been done before, writing online has had a negative impact on a person’s writing skills which can be proven through the writings of Malcolm X, Gannon, and Daum.
An essay titled "does Texting Affect Writing?" was published by Michaela Cullington while she studied to gain her masters degree in speech and language pathology at Marywood University. In her essay she claims that texting and texting language neither benefits or harms a students academic writing. Michaela Cullington asserts that a conspiracy has been going around concerning how texting can limit a students writing ability in ways such as not being able to convey emotion in writing, forgetting how to write a formal English paper and use correct punctuation, and most of all a decline in spelling.
Texting Does Not Effect Formal Writing As a teenager in the texting era, I completely understand how some people could think texting affects writing in a bad way; however, from personal experience I can say that It clearly has no effect on my writing, and does not have any effect on factory workers writing either. In this statement, I can conclude that throughout high school writing essays and texting, I always performed well in class. The texting had no effect on my writing because it is two different things. Others as well were great writers, but put them on a phone to text you could never tell. If anything, it has helped the people who have not furthered their education to write and practice each day.
Sue Honoré, an independent learning consultant who has studied people who were born from 1982 to 2002 has that “while young people are "undoubtedly capable of long periods of concentration", those who spend a lot of time alone using technology tend to have less in the way of communication skills, self-awareness and emotional intelligence”. It has been proven that around 31 nations that students who used computers everyday in class had lower test scores in reading and math than students who don’t use them as much (Study: Students Who Use in School Doesn’t Help Test Scores). Though technology is amazing and has given so many people different opportunities they would’ve never had before it is resulting in a few bad habits for students. Casey Schools systems around the United States have begun to rely on technology to teach their students instead of teachers to teach them. According Michael Godsey, a veteran high-school English educator, even said and agreed with many people today that we are at the point in time where since we have the internet at our fingertips, there is really no need for teachers
As the World progresses, technology has always been a part of it, if not ahead. I for one, have grown up in a time where the use of technology has been intertwined in the society. Since technological advancements began a while ago, the newer generation of children has access to it with ease than those who came before them. This then does arise some concerns about the effect of technology on younger generations. Just like with other controversial topics, there are some negative sides to technology as well as positive sides.
The telephone, one of the most powerful inventions during the industrial revolution, changed communication in a major scale. There was a vast problem surrounding us during the 19th century, not being able to communicate in a matter of seconds in case of an emergency. (“ Living with the telephone”). Science came up with a solution, the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The telephone was a phenomenal invention that helped individuals communicate with each other in a matter of seconds, not like the telegraph or mail (“Morse Code & the Telegraph”).
In conclusion, technology can have negative impacts on today’s people in many ways. It is harmful to people’s well-being, makes people lose physical connections with those around them, and it makes students disregard their work. Technology is everywhere in today’s society. These devices can be so harmful to people without them even knowing it. People should be more aware of what technology can do, and try their best not to depend on
We all use it. The world today is overflowing with technological gizmos which have greatly affected the lives of people. People have become overly dependent on technology. Gadgets such as computers, smart phones, and television have been invented over time to make our lives easier and more convenience.
Only those who live a simpler and balanced life have the power to be more caring, and witty. In other words, living a modest life helps us to enjoy details, create face to face connections with people around us, and get to know ourselves better, whereas material goods like phones, body modifying surgeries and accessories are acquired so easily that we keep wanting more instead of enjoying what we already have. Our value comes from who we are, not for what we have and simplicity helps people to overlook your acquisitions and see whom you really are. Cellphones are one way that people are materialistic and we have a reliance on material goods but we can work towards a balance that can make our lives simpler and help us connect more to others and ourselves.
