Born February 23rd 1868 DuBois spent his life caught between two extremely unsettling times in the history of African-American culture. Living in the time after slavery but before the boom of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s Debois situated himself in such way that he was able to bring awareness about the unique experience felt by many African Americans during this time period.As an African American writer Sociologist, Civil Right Activist and a Pan -Africanist Dubois communicates the reality of his and his people’s struggle in the his paper Double-Consciousness and the Veil. He argues that “ there is a sense of always looking at oneself through the eyes of others”(Dubois,1903,pp.164). Defining what he would essentially coin as the powerlessness felt by many African Americans when they must decide subjectively and objectively weather to be African or American in a given situation. He Responds to the happening commenting that “I could beat my mates at examination time,beat them in a foot race or even beat their stringy heads...and all their dazzling opportunities were theirs not mine”(Dubois,1903,pp.164). Dubois is able to push himself to be stronger than his peersin all aspects including intelligence intellect and physical strength yet he must submit to his role in society until he can produce change. This begs the question what is the reason behind injustices like these. Is this a problem. Is his problem his own or is the problem with the society he lives in at the time. The Veil is the answer to this question, “I was different from the others or like mayhap in heart and life and longing but shut out from there world by a vast veil.(Dubois,1903,pp.164). E. B. DuBois was a white civil rights leader during the nineteenth century. In 1903, DuBois critiqued Booker T. Washington’s “Atlanta Compromise” in an essay called “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others” within his book, The Souls of Black Folk . DuBois asked for political power, insistence on civil rights, and higher education for African Americans. Booker T. Washington’s speech was looked at by many and to the radicals it looked like a “complete surrender of the demand for civil and political equality”(DuBois) for the entire African American population. Abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and W. E. B. DuBois disagreed with the idea of accommodation and submission.
That burden was the burden of being black in a society that had torn his race apart. For nearly a century, the United States was occupied by the racial segregation of black and white people. The constitutionality of this “separation of humans into racial or other ethnic groups in daily life” had not been decided until a deliberate provocation to the law was made. The goal of this test was to have a mulatto, someone of mixed blood, defy the segregated train car law and raise a dispute on the fairness of being categorized as colored or not. In Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem, “We Wear the Mask” the speaker wears a mask to hide his internal suffering because he does not want the rest of the world to think he is weak. This poem relates the prejudice black people face against white people. The speaker starts the poem with the lines, “We wear the mask that grins and lies,” (1). African-American historian W.E.B Dubois illustrated how the Civil War brought the problems of African-American experiences into the spotlight. As a socialist, he argued against the traditional Dunning interpretations and voiced opinions about the failures and benefits of the Civil War era, which he branded as a ‘splendid failure’. The impacts of Civil War era enabled African-Americans to “form their own fraternal organizations, worship in their own churches and embrace the notion of an activist government that promoted and safeguarded the welfare of its citizens.”
In the analysis of the abundance of wonderful leaders who made a difference in the African American community since emancipation, W.E.B Du Bois made a special impact to advance the world. From founding the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, to his influential book The Souls of Black Folk, he always found an accurate yet abstract way of verbalizing the strives of African Americans as well as making platforms for them to be known. Dubois was an professor, sociologist, historian and civil rights activist born in 1868. Dubois attended Harvard (where he also received the first African American Doctorate) and was very passionate about the civil rights movement, and equal rights for everyone regardless of race. Dubois went on to help organize the “Niagara Movement” in 1905 which opposed Booker T. Washingtons “Atlanta Compromise” that stated African Americans would submit to white political rule, in exchange for basic economic and educational opportunities. Dubois was against segregation and called for equality. He went on to co-found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) in 1909.
But, this feeling is created by racism of the superior of the white people. When Black people take on their oppression as a personal failure, this is when an inferiority complex arises. It is also continually boosted in daily life in racist societies, because Black people are constantly reminded they are Black first and people second. Double consciousness is a term coined by W.E.B. DuBois in his The Souls of Black Folk. He describes it as, “a peculiar sensation, this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity”(2). The theory of double consciousness is the idea that the African American must navigate the voyages of life from within a form of “two-ness” (2), because he is both man, and black.
