The Era of Good Feelings, beginning in 1816 with the election of James Monroe as president, directly followed the War of 1812, was a time of nationalism, hope and and confidence in the United States. However, in the shadow of this national pride, different areas of the country began to shift apart in different ways, opening the door to domestic tension. The Era of Good Feeling was both a time of economic growth and political change for the country. This was caused by a surge in nationalistic feelings throughout the United States, as well as growing sectional tensions. The War of 1812 made the American people feel as though they should be aggressive in foreign affairs, which led to the introduction of a protective tariff and the Monroe Doctrine. However, during this time, sectional differences, such as slavery, population, and transportation infrastructure, divided the country, shaping its regions to be quite different from each other. The North had a significantly larger population, caused by both the surge in immigrants at the time, as well as the success of business and factories there, creating more jobs. This difference in population meant that the North did not need slavery, and that it supported government ideas that helped business. According to the Congressional Record, in New England and the Middle States, the majority of House votes were cast for the Tariff of 1816, while the majority of the South’s House votes were cast against the tariff (Document 7). These states were clearly in favor of business, while the South who relies on imports and exports, was wholly against it. Because factory jobs were in the North, railroads and steamboats were in vastly more demand in the North than they were in the South, increasing the speed at which a business could move its product, an essential for
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
The industrialization of the north was an issue that arguably divided the United States in 1845. The rapid shift from an agrarian economy to an industrial one spurred an influx of immigrants which increased the amount of the working population in the north, and gave northern living its own culture as the development of industry took hold. Contrastingly the south was still an agrarian
When Congress issued tariffs on foreign goods, Southerners believed that Congress favored the North since this tariff would benefit them. John Randolph spoke of this issue, arguing that Congress was being unfair since the South was not benefiting from the actions of Congress at all while the North benefited (Doc A). As for political conflict, there was a clear case of factionalism and political rivalry in 1824 (Doc I). With these conflicts amongst the varying factions and political parties, the political tension and sectionalism within America continued to grow. Accusations and anger from the South further separated them from the North, which did not contribute “good feelings” to the country at
The US was much divided between the North and South in between different methods of labor. While the North was more industrial and the South was very preoccupied with economic gains from slavery. This division of methods of labor would only inspire different foreign nations to trade with different parts of the US. This
The “Era of Good Feelings,” from 1815-1825, was not an accurate label of the period after the War of 1812 because of various conflicts in economic nationalism , disagreements in politics, and the disunion of the citizens. In addition, several sectional issues emerged, mostly between the North and the South, regarding to the Tariff of 1816 and the conflict over slavery. Both nationalism and sectionalism had a great influence on whether the period from 1815-1825 was actually the “Era of Good Feelings.” Despite the fact that nationalism was emerging, it also caused many economic issues, thus, the “Era of Good Feelings” was not labeled accurately. After the War of 1812, many Americans had a feeling of patriotism in the 1820s when they were still celebrating the Fourth of July after many years, which shows how unified the citizens were.
The South was offended by the North. The North had prominent economy. Northern states based their economy on trade and manufacture goods. Document 3 states, “ the North’s economy came to depend more on trade than on agriculture.” Document 5 also inform how cities in the North grew promptly, the railway system, and the shipping industry.
The period from 1815 to 1825 is commonly referred to as the “Era of Good Feelings”. Following the collapse of the Federalist political party the Republicans ran unopposed and attempted to reach agreements with previous Federalist dominated states granting the period this title. The Republican Party factionalized as a result of no opposition resulting in sectionalism, which led to various political and economic issues. This period being called, “The Era of Good Feelings,” is an incorrect title because of the widespread panic prevalent in the United States during this time. Document A, which is a letter from John Randolph to Congress, clearing expresses concerns about sectionalism.
The War of 1812 was between the United States and Europe, the war ended in 1815, the time period after the war was known as the ‘Era of Good Feelings’. The ‘Era of Good Feelings’ was an accurate label for the nationalistic time between 1816-1824 because of the increased government powers through the Second Bank of the United States, technological advancements such as interchangeable parts and the cotton gin sparked the Industrial Revolution. In our modern society, each individuals have their own definition of happiness. Aristotle said “Happiness is a state of activity.”, and the Bible states that true happiness can only be found in relationship with God. On the contrary, in the novel Brave New World, the controllers of the World State decide what happiness is, and condition the citizens into believing that perspective. However, this lead into sacrificing many aspects which we feel beauty and value, such as love, liberalism, passion. This resulted in changing the society in Brave New World different from our society.
An opinion of Andrew Jackson from an American Citizen in 1837 Looking back over the two terms Andrew Jackson served as President of the United States from his history making short inauguration speech to his leaving office there are three main issues that stand out from all the rest that define who Andrew Jackson was. Andrew Jackson earned his nickname, Old Hickory, for being a rough and tough man (Roark et al., 2014, pp.283) as he frequently gave the impression that he was strong enough to fight against anyone, as he was known for duel challenges, and felt honor was a man’s leading character, not to mention he was victorious at the Battle of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson appeared tough enough to lead the way for the country and be the champion
So they became more focused on industry. Items like cotton, wool, pig iron, weapons, furniture, and other important items were being produced at a faster rate than the south. " By 1860, 90 percent of the nation 's manufacturing output came from the northern states” (Industry and Economy during the Civil War) The need for slaves in the north had reduced drastically. Slavery wasn 't needed in the North as much as it was in the south.
Monroe’s presidency was emblematic of national harmony. Coined “the Era of Good Feelings” by the Columbian Centinel, the surge of national pride from the War of 1812 and the death of the Federalist party created a sense of unity in America. The government, for one of the first times in its young history, devoted itself to the nation rather than to divided regions. During this period, nationalism manifested in several forms, including economic, judicial, and diplomatic nationalism. Each facet of nationalism served to unify the country as a whole and mold it into a modern society.
This national focus was completely different than the revolutionary generations’ national focus instead focusing on westward expansion and industrialization for the entire nation, this is successful for the nation resulting in a coast to coast nation and a modernized nation. Political unity changed from a united government to a fractured political landscape. Before 1824, the political landscape was united and legislatively effective; this period was called the Era of Good Feelings (1812 – 1824). Throughout the Era of Good Feelings effective government dominated, which led to progress in developing and strengthening the nation. This period of effective government was established after the War of 1812 (1812 – 1815), creating unity amongst Americans.
The purpose of this essay is to pick apart Mill’s essay and to give my own personal opinion about happiness. Stuart believed that you could achieve happiness by helping others achieve happiness and by finding things that you enjoy in life. I believe the key to happiness is helping other people achieve their happiness, do things that you enjoy doing, and looking at things in the brightest way possible. I honestly believe that everyone wakes up in the morning wanting to be happy, I have never seen a person who wakes up saying, “ I want to have an absolutely miserable day today”. It is human nature to strive for happiness and do things that you enjoy to do.
Pangloss: Martin, there is no doubt that we have faced great suffering in recent years. However, had I not suffered the “hellish torment of disease (Voltaire 8),” hanging, dissections, lashings, and rowing in the galleys (Voltaire 75), I would not feel the happiness of enjoying this walk with you in this beautiful and bountiful garden. All events of suffering experience throughout our existence are linked in this best of all possible worlds (Voltaire 79). And I must say, my dear Martin, that “nothing could be better (Voltaire 2)” and we are living a life of true happiness cultivating our land.
