Research has shown that American schools are one of the safest places for children (Sugai & Horner, 2008). But in the past 20 years, school violence has been widely broadcasted, raising concerns for parents, teachers and administrators alike. The purpose of all school discipline policies is to reduce instances of student misbehavior, including bullying, fighting, vandalism, truancy, and drug use. Public concerns have called for a tightening of these policies so that students are truly safe and more successful in school. With heightened concerns, the use of zero tolerance policies has been on the rise (Peterson & Skiba, 2000). These policies include discipline actions such as suspension and expulsions. School security measures have also been increased including metal detectors, video surveillance, and locker searches. Studies have shown that even though these actions were made to deter negative student behavior and make students feel safer, they are doing the opposite. Supporting students social and emotional needs through clear expectations, consistent actions, and positive reinforcement can help them not only develop into better human beings but can also help them academically. The increase of police officer or SROs diminish the school 's’ efforts to develop academically engage youths because the SRO demoralizes the students by criminalizing them for minor offence. “The presence of police officers has increased student arrests on school grounds between 300 and 500% annually since the establishment of the zero tolerance policy” (Mallett 2015). Mallet’s findings illustrate that with more security on campus students are arrested more often for minor issues because the youths have a higher chance of being caught. The federal government has censored press on various occasions throughout history, contemporary censorship is practiced in non-governmental organizations and corporations, and in schools, as well as public libraries, books are continuously challenged in hopes of them being removed or banned. Brittney Foster SOCY 423 UMUC 03/01/2018 Racial integration of schools Racial integration is a situation whereby people of all races come together to achieve a common goal and hence making a unified system. Racial integration of schools is well elaborated in the two articles by Pettigrew and Kirp. These two articles say that combination in the American schools since 1954 has unceremoniously ushered out the Brown versus Board of Education which was a decision made by the Supreme Court. The topic of discussion of these two articles hence is relevant to our course since it gives us the light of how racial desegregation and racial integration shaped America’s history.
Throughout this essay I will be explaining how a behaviour policy supports teachers and how it can also create an effective learning environment. I will also be highlighting any issues which could potentially arise from the use of a behaviour policy. A behaviour policy is guidance for members of staff within a school on how to deal with different behaviours, and sets out the expectations of behaviour for all children at the school. If a behaviour policy is written well it will support the formation of an effective learning environment. An effective learning environment for young children is an environment in which all children feel able to express themselves freely, allowing them to learn effectively.

Racism: Why It Should Be Taught To Children Racism has, and always has had, a great effect on American society. Still to this day, even after the civil war over slavery in the 19th century and the anti-segregation movements of the 20th century, countless peoples still face ridicule over the color of their skin or the shape of their face. If it were to be taught in schools that judging someone based on their appearance is bad, then perhaps there wouldn’t be such an integration of racism in modern American society. Not simply learning ‘don’t be a racist’ in a high school social studies course while half asleep or thinking of what’s for lunch, but the concept of just how much it can affect someone’s life in such a negative way should be taught to children throughout their whole school careers. Without outwardly influence, children are proven to be unbiased.
When is the last time you got in trouble and got sent to your dean? Many kids attending school have been sent to their deans for their choices or actions. Some actions may include Drug/alcohol usage, fighting or even getting kick out for disruptive issues. Activities should be assigned to parents and students to get them more involved and find a solution to the situation. For example; community service, anti-bullying workshops, and school activities. Also, parents should be required to be more involved with the student academics, social life, and be responsible for their child’s behavior. By being involved in their kid’s life, this will help the bully have a better understanding of the situation, and he or she will learn how dangerous and painful is being a bully. On the other hand, involved parents should have a better understanding as of why the student is having this behavior and will know how to help their child or seek additional help.
Schools which have implemented strict anti-bullying policies have taken an effective approach to stop bullying and create a healthy learning environment for students to participate
Bullying is defined as repeated oppression, physical or psychological of a less powerful individual by a more powerful individual, people or group. It consists of three main types of abuse which are physical, verbal and emotional. Bullying in schools is a common and worldwide spread problem that can have critical and negative implications on the general school climate as well as on the right of students to study in a safe and secure environment without fear. Many people believe that bullying is part of life, happens in all schools and so it’s not an issue to worry about and that it lets individuals know what life is all about as it toughens them but in reality bullying is a detrimental problem that affects most school going children and teenagers physically, emotionally and socially.
