1. Identification and evaluation of sources This investigation, examining certain events of the Cold War, will answer the question: To what extent did President Ronald Reagan’s actions aid in the end of the Cold War? The Cold War was a war between the United States and the Soviet Union that took place from 1947 to 1991. During that time several United States presidents took office, one of the last being Ronald Reagan whose actions have been argued to have been more influential than the rest and impactful toward the downfall of the ongoing war with the Soviet Union.

During 1950, in an effort to reduce military spending, President Eisenhower created the “New Look” Policy and developed the “New Look” Military in order to “revamp” containment and deter the Soviet Union from spreading Communism. Although this was his intention, the United States only succeeded in reducing the military budget, and did not deter the Soviet Union from trying to expand Communism. President Eisenhower wanted to perpetuate the containment policies that were laid out by George Kannan and the NSC 68, and his main goal was to deter Communism with the threat of nuclear retaliation. The Cold War lasted decades and tensions continued to heightened. Trepidation spread among American citizens about the future of their country and world. Would communism take over or would the United States stand their ground and push for democracy? Following the Second World War, the Cold War caused the American people to fear the growth Communism, an economic depression, and a possible nuclear war, yet the Eisenhower Administration successfully addressed these concerns and implemented ways to reduce these fears. First and foremost, the American people feared that communism would spread and take over governments in other nations beyond the Kremlin.

In an effort to stop communism from spreading, the United States and its allies practiced containment. Containment is the act of keeping something harmful under control, this meant that the United States and its allies will get involved if they needed in order to stop communism from spreading. The U.S and its allies managed to help several countries from falling into communism, but they also suffered their hardships and lost many men during a war to protect their allie, South Korea. On February 1946, the United States, State Department received a telegram, the telegram seemed to give of two warnings.

Next, the policy of containment would lead to the U.S.S.R. being threatened because it would lead to Allies. For example, under the TRUMAN DOCTRINE, the U.S. vowed to support countries threatened by the Soviets. Allies of the U.S. helped with containment, as shown in Document A, which has a point of view from the 1947 Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson. This can be seen when Stimson describes that millions of soldiers from Ally countries would need to come fight if Japan resisted. Because this shows that Allies forces could be as large as millions of people, there is no doubt that the U.S.S.R. felt intimidated as a result.

Imagine if you lived in a place where you had no freedom, and you were ruled by a man like Joseph Stalin. That is what it would be like in many countries if it weren’t for the United States’ policy of containment. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union wanted to take over other countries and make them have the government system of Communism. The United States didn’t like that, because they thought their governmental system of Democracy was better. As a result, the U.S. adopted a policy of “Containment”.

The Cold War was a time in history when there was a great political and military turmoil between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Cold War shaped the world in these three ways, women’s rights, society,Cultural. These three changed people in positive and negative ways. Once again, women were called upon to fulfill a role in the defense of America on one hand to perpetuate the American population and on the other to promote American ideals abroad. Women had a chance to be equal to men.

Containment was the policy put forth by George F. Kennan, who held that the Soviet Union lacked reasoning and logic (Schaller 976). Containment was the manner to counteract communists uprising and undercut any potential expansion of the Soviet Union 's influence. This approach to communism and Soviet Union’s ambitions would be the core of American foreign policy for forty years(Schaller 976). In one of these early acts to counter the Soviet Union’s objectives, congress approved the release of 400 million dollars towards putting down the rise of communism in Greece(Schaller 976). Across Asia many conflicts would arise, most notably in Korea and Vietnam.

Containment was used by the United States so they could prevent communism spreading and was used towards the Guatemalans, Greece, Turkey, and Cuba during the cold war. In which was successful in stopping communism from spreading but did require people being killed or be put in jail which is bad because they got punished for something they believed on. This happened around 1954 because at that time they were fighting the cold war so they had to come with a quick and effective way to stop communism from spreading and containment was the solution. Containment was a big step for the Unites states, they were to intimidate the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union began demanding adjustments to its relations and control over Turkey, as well as Iran. Though Stalin backed down at the threat of U.S. Naval forces, his actions led to the containment policy. This policy is used to prevent the spread of communism. Later, in 1947, the United States took over the responsibility of providing economic aid to Turkey and Greece and announced that they would be helping the nations affected by Communism. The Marshall Plan was put into effect later that year and it offered reconstruction aid to much of Europe.

Some historians believe the Cold War was inevitable because of the hostilities from both America and the Soviet Union after World War II. America believed that the USSR was an expansionist country trying to spread an evil, communistic idea throughout the world. Although the countries never directly fought against each other, as they only fought in proxy wars, there was still extreme conflict. The United States responded to the Soviets actions in Germany, Europe, and their national actions. These responses were justifiable, or so many Americans at the time believed.
