Racism in Eastside High School There are many discriminated schools in the world to this day, most of them having to take place in the lower income areas. While in Eastside High School, in the movie Lean On Me didn’t seem like one of those trashy High Schools with a poor foundation of people. Yes, there were many students in their that weren’t the richest, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that before Mr. Clark had left the school, Eastside High was very mature and clean. Students aren’t taught bad things on their own. Lack of parenting is the reason kids are being stereotyped and shunned on for their race. Parents don’t know how to properly teach their kids right from wrong, which is causing such discrimination and stereotypes. During the movie, we can see that before Mr. Clark had even left the school it was a pretty decent school, nothing too bad about it. Yes, of course it had a few bad people but no school is filled with amazing people. There was a great deal of balance in this school. Then Mr. Clark had quit and the whole school and everyone in it went downhill. A lot of the students within the school were dealing drugs as well as doing drugs, and a lot of people within the school have also started forgetting about their education and saw school as merely a place to …show more content…
These stereotypical thoughts and sayings, started to come to life. People started to take these stereotypical sentences, and punish the people who were saying them, making the situation at hand worse. The parents were shunned upon by the community for not taking care of their children as well as socially profiled. Many of these parents and kids had finally lost all hope in their generation and ended up not caring about what their kids were doing or how they were doing in school, and just let the discrimination come
Intrinsic racists believe that each race has a different moral status that are independent from moral characteristics that come from moral essences. Being the same race as someone else entails preferring that person over another who is not of the same race. For example, we have a greater moral interest in our biologically related brother than in a stranger. Intrinsic racists will never hold that someone who has greater capabilities, but is not of their race, is admirable or will receive the same treatment to someone of their own race. The teacher asks whether or not black students still care about racial justice and the boy responds by saying, “In the fifties we still had something to prove so we had a reason to fight”. The teacher asks, “you don’t think black students are competing now?”. His response: “No.” Maybe the filmmakers took this exchange out of context or maybe the student was trying to say something else, but it saddened me to think that there might be children who already feel a sense of defeat. The recent media campaigns surrounding police violence against black individuals, something that has been going on for decades just without media coverage, is showing the public that there is far more that needs to be done in order to make America equal for all races.
Racism in the the 1900s The John. F.Kennedy story was one of the greatest president moments caught on camera they even called his finest moment because that was the day that he told the white man get out of the way of the black people that have come to participate in school. That was a big deal back then because racism was a lot bigger than what it is today the reason is because back then were a lot of problems with racism but one of them that pop up most is the story of William Minner, that day his dad and him went to the spring’s to get water this spring was open to both white and black. Louis alone are certainly alarming, I am most dismayed by the responses of the children from Morris High. It is evident that the children at Morris High do not fully understand the implications of racial inequality, nor do they regard the immense suffering of children in schools like those in East St. Louis. However, if I were a young white girl from a high class family attending Morris high, I too might have the same outlook. I likely would have been taught to acknowledge the inequalities faced by the minority, but would not have been taught the privileges I have experience for being white. If I were suddenly to start attending East St. Louis schools, however, the inequalities faced by my new peers would become much more apparent.
Still Separate, Still Unequal by Jonathan Kozol I found this article to be very interesting and extremely heartbreaking. Jonathan Kozol paints a vivid and grim picture of predominantly black or Hispanic schools in and around some the largest cities in America. Even in areas where the distribution of races is somewhat equal, Kozol tells us that most white families would rather send their kids by bus to a school where more than half of the students are white. Some schools, like Martin Luther King Jr. high school in New York City, are located purposefully in upper middle class white neighborhoods in hopes to draw in a more diverse selection of children, i.e. more white kids. It seems however, according to Kozol, that this plan not only did not work, but has made it a prime and obvious example of modern segregation in our schools.
Many people think that most American schools are satisfactory. That is far from what is actually happening. The harsh reality is that schools that are unsatisfactory do exist. In Jonathan Kozol’s “Fremont High School”, he points out the flaws of a high school located somewhere in Los Angeles. This helps shine light on differences in the quality of education in various areas of the country.
“Kids know Nothing about racism. They’re taught that by adults,” say’s Ruby Bridges. Ruby’s life at home, how her education impacted her family, how her education helped, the stress she was going through and how she fixed it, and her life after school. Ruby Bridges discrimination in going to school changed how people looked at kids and especially black kids at school. In fact her home life wasn’t bad.
The decision to attend a white school is a tough one and Junior understands that for him to survive and to ensure that his background does not stop him from attaining his dreams; he must battle the stereotypes regardless of the consequences. School districts are based on where people live, so the city schools are composed of racial minority students, while the suburban schools are composed of white students (79). Hartford’s schools have been racially divided since the 1970s, when school’s throughout the area were completely segregated on the first day. Over the next thirty years, the segregation would become even more prominent when 94 percent of children in the city would consist of racial minority groups (244). The racial segregation present in both the city and the suburbs makes the students in each type of school strongly aware of each other’s differences. On the way to a school in the suburbs, one of Miss Luddy’s students asked if the class is going to a white school (258).
Throughout Jonathan Kozol’s essay “Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid” (347) and “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (374) by Beverly Tatum, both Kozol and Tatum discuss racial issues in the educational system. Kozol and Tatum explain racial issues by presenting two different instances that racial issues have played a roles. These two instances being visiting different public schools by Kozol and noticing the cafeteria segregation by Tatum. Using their own personal experiences, their arguments essentially come to similar conclusions, so by comparing their essays, the most significant problems are brought to the table.
The film District 9 was directed by Neil Blomkamp and released in 2009. The main actors in the film were Sharlto Copley who portrays Wikus Merwe and Jason Cope who portrays Christopher Johnson. The film is meant to depict the life of an extraterrestrial race that was forced to stay on earth in deteriorated conditions, while also facing discriminatory treatment from humans. Thus, District 9 demonstrates racism through the aliens, the process of dissociation of Wikus as a human, and how the director intended to humanize the aliens to the audience.
