In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus uses parables to teach the other disciples. The parable of the unforgiving slave portrays God to be as forgiving to us as we are to others. The parable is used when Peter questions Jesus about how many times a person should forgive another who keeps offending. Peter suggests that forgiving someone seven times seems sufficient to which Jesus replies that not even seventy-seven times is enough. This is most likely an exaggeration and is meant to mean that you should forgive as many times as necessary. This parable implies that once we put a limit on forgiveness, God puts the same limit when forgiving us.
