Reacting specific alkyl and aryl halides with magnesium metal will result an in organomagneisum compound known as a Grignard reagent (RMgX) (Ketcha, 155). To properly create a Grignard reagent, a few rules must be follow. First, aliphatic Grignard reagents are prepared by alkyl iodides, bromides and chlorides (Ketcha, 155). Aryl and vinylic Grignard reagents are prepared normally with iodides and bromides (Ketcha, 155). Second, “anhydrous, inert and basic (polar aprotic) solvent such as diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran (THF) is required to solvate the magnesium” (Ketcha, 155). Thirdly, there are numerous functional groups that must not be present on the organic halide molecule to make it into a Grignard reagent (Ketcha, 158). Fourth, Grignard …show more content…
25 mL of a 1 M phenyl magnesium bromide in tetrahydrofuran was dispensed into the beaker by using a syringe. The resulting mixture was stirred for about 15 minutes when the purple color turned into a brown color permanently. It was then extracted first with 20 mL of dichloromethane and the bottom DCM layer containing the product was reextracted with 10 mL of dichloromethane. The final bottom layer was retained and dried with MgSO4. The drying agent was discarded when the mixture was filtered. The dichloromethane in the mixture was evaporate when the mixture was heated on a hotplate of 120 degrees C. It was heated until it stopped bubbling and a small oil layer remained. Petroleum ether (15 mL) was added, mixed, and cool in an ice bath. The product was vacuum filtrated, keeping the precipitate. The precipitate was further dried by utilizing a drying …show more content…
A melting point of 130 to 135 degrees shows is over 200 degrees lower than the melting point of triphenylmethanol (360-380 degrees C). This could be due to a few reasons. One, the product was not pure. Any contamination, would it be DCM or the petroleum ether, could result in a lower temperature. What supports this possibility was the fact the product was unable to be 100% dried. This resulted in a material that was more like slightly wet clay then a solid crystal and possibly contain petroleum ether which would result in a lower melting point. Another possible reason was the final product was not, in fact, triphenylmethanol, un pure or
Louis Riel (1844-1885) On November 16, 1885, 41 year old Louis David Riel was executed. Riel was born on October 22nd , 1844 in Saint-Boniface, Red river settlement. James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, was the one to lead English settlers to the colony. The Spanish were there originally, but 1730, when James led the settlers, the Spanish were mainly gone. James led the settlement as a refuge for the poor and debtors. He also made a multifaceted plan for settling and government called Oglethorpe Plan, which will be touched upon further in the governments slide.
Have you noticed anyone wearing a jewel with a blue ribbon? Or anyone that has a pin of a white cross with rainbow colored diamonds on it? These people are Masters of the Grand Cross of Color, and someday you may also earn that title. The Grand Cross of Color is one of the highest awards that the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls can give to its members and advisors with masonic affiliation.
Every kid dreams of becoming The President of the United States of America at some point in his or her life. Most kids usually change their mind and want to be something more realistic, like an astronaut, but a young boy named Ronald Grump is not like most kids. Ronald had always dreamed of being the next President of the United States. As he grew older, this dream never faded. When his friends from middle school would ask him to hang out, he would gladly decline because he was too busy writing his inaugural address.

Today, Gallaudet University is pretty well known around the United States, but it didn 't start out that way. It all began in 1856 when Amos Kendall became the guardian of some blind and deaf children who were not properly cared for. He set up a school and house for them, and then Edward Gallaudet took on from there as the school superintendent. The next year, Congress permitted the school to start.
Juan Gris was a Spanish painter and sculptor born in Madrid, Spain on March 23, 1887. Originally, his name was Jose Victoriano Gonzalez-Perez. He was known for his paintings in the Cubist style and producing sculptures. His works are praised by art critics as being some of the finest examples of cubist painting. In his paintings, he emphasized that every element of each painting should be considered with classical quality and balanced colors.
The legendary Virginia State University Historically black colleges and universities are founded almost everywhere in the United States. During the time of the Civil War, in the South of the United States, there were no higher education systems for African American students. “Particularly, with the 13th amendment abolition of slavery and reconstruction in the South, things began to change.” (“The History of Historically”) “In 1862, Senator Justin Morrill spearheaded a movement to improve the state of higher education throughout the United States, putting emphasis on the need for institutions to train Americans in the applied sciences, agriculture and engineering”.
One example of how the Sephardic Jews fared in the New Country is story of David Naar in the provincial city of Trenton, NJ. Rabbi S. Joshua Kohn, writing in the 1964 American Jewish Historical Quarterly found that, traces a Sephardic family who made a difference. In 1839, Dr. Daniel Levy Maduro Peixotto, of New York City became co-editor of the Trenton Emporium and True American. He became editor of the newspaper and practiced medicine until his return to New York in 1853. In that same year, 1853, David Naar, a brother-in –law of Dr. Peixotto, bought the newspaper, Daily True American (formerly The Daily Emporium and True American).
Benzyne Formation and the Diels-Alder Reaction Preparation of 1,2,3,4 Tetraphenylnaphthalene Aubree Edwards Purpose: 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylnaphthalene is prepared by first producing benzyne via the unstable diazonium salt. Then tetraphenylcyclopentadienone and benzyne undergo a diels-alder reaction to create 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylnaphthalene. Reactions: Procedure: The reaction mixture was created. Tetraphenylcyclopentadienone (0.1197g, 0.3113 mmol) a black solid powder, anthranilic acid ( 0.0482g, 0.3516 mmol) a yellowish sand, and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (1.2 ml) was added to a 5-ml conical vial.
The Greshowak and Nelson family If you want to be part of a family that has 3 boys, 2 girls, 4 cats, 3 hermit crabs, and a horse you’ve come to the right place! We disagree sometimes but ultimately we love each other very much! Let me introduce you to the Greshowak and Nelson family. Billy is my step dad. He works as a surveillance officer, a private investigator, and as a bounty hunter.
The purpose of this experiment was to learn about metal hydride reduction reactions. Therefore, the sodium borohydride reduction of the ketone, 9-fluorenone was performed to yield the secondary alcohol, 9-fluorenol. Reduction of an organic molecule usually corresponds to decreasing its oxygen content or increasing its hydrogen content. In order to achieve such a chemical change, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is used as a reducing agent. There are other metal hydrides used in the reduction of carbonyl groups such as lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4).
As mentioned in number 13, the data for the melting point makes sense because my pure product and given compound almost perfectly matched. 17. Again as explained in number 14, the TLC data made sense because my pure compound and 4-tert-butylbenzyl phenol had similar distances from the solvent origin of the plate. The presence of benzyl bromide and benzyl alcohol also explains how not all the product dissolved in the filtrate.
