Should homework be limited? Homework has been a debate issue for decades. Throughout the first few decades of the 20th century, educators believed it helped create disciplined mind. By 1940, the notion homework interfered other home activities generated a trend against it. In the late 1950s, the soviet union launched the ‘Sputnik’ and the space race began. U.S. concern from losing the race caused the trend flip by giving rigorous homework as part of the solution. By 1980, the trend flipped side again regarding theories about health problems students might suffer from homework. Since then, the debate goes on with new arguments showing up every now and then. The recent decade is characterized by the fact that the arguments against homework has become more passionate and more popular(3). However, should popularity come in the place of evidence? This document intends to present both sides of the issue by relating to its fundamental aspects and offering a further direction. Two meta-analyses of researches about homework were conducted by Cooper and colleagues (Cooper, 1989a; Cooper, Robinson, & Patall, 2006). These analyses are considered the most comprehensive and demanding on the subject matter. Cooper’s covers studies from 1930 to 1989 and the second covers from 1989 to 2003.
